HlStOI'y of Class of '54 On a brxght sunny day IH September of 1942 25 scared llttle youngsters scrambled for front desks and stared w1de eyed at the new faces about them M1ss Paulme performed m1racles that f1rst year by keepmg us st1ll and teach1ng us to read wrmte and count Our grammar school days are a m1xture of memor1es of new students b1 annual plays mag1c1an shows and playlng 'Treasure at recess Our grammar school hab1t was look 1ng for money on the campus and under the Coca Cola ma chme We all thought we were pract1cally adult when we entered the e1ghth grade At last we were 1n h1gh school' We had gamed and lost some students along the way and our class was fewer 1n number Two outstandmg events occurred 1n the e1ghth grade We began to change classes wh1ch was awfully confusmg s1nce we were accustomed to rema1n1ng 1n one room all day and we made our f1rst book reports for Mrs Parks One of the h1ghl1ghts of those f1rst years was ' Rat Week wh1ch was our 1n1t1at1on 1nto h1gh school conducted by the up perclassmen The g1rls were made to wear one h1gh heeled shoe hau' partly rolled up no make up and of course we had to do all the thmgs the upper classmen told us to do The boys as was the custom were run through the belt l1ne wh1ch resulted 1n hurt feelmgs' Nothmg very 1mportant happened 1n the n1nth grade In the tenth grade some of the g1rls and boys began to take part 1n the sports program by playmg basketball and becom When we became .Tumors we acqu1red the d1gn1ty that all .Tumors do We had our f1rst play for the publ1c The D1zzy D1llons wh1ch was a b1g success But that year our h1gh school was dropped from the accred1tedl1st Th1s resulted 1n our bemg left out of such th1ngs as the Mus1c Fest1vals 1n wh1ch our Glee Club had always part1c1pated lt also meant that we could have very few basketball games At the end of the year we had our annual Junlor Sen1or banquet The theme was 'Moonhght and Roses ' and not to be braggmg lt was a tremendous success And now we are Sen1ors Only four of us have made lt through twelve years together Faye Dan1el Ellen W1seman Parker B1shop and Tommy Alston We gamed two new mem bers th1s year They are Mar1e Lunsford and Sara L1ll1an Hobbs We all agree that It IS the best year of our h1gh school days 1n sp1te of the fact that we w1ll have to make nu1sances of ourselves by sell1ng barbecue Ads Chr1stmas cards ma gaz1ne subscr1pt1ons and present1ng plays so that we may take a tr1p at the end of the year We just presented our f1rst class play 'Aunt T1ll1e Goes to Town wh1ch was successful And we're look1ng forward to our Jun1or Senlor banquet 1n May wh1ch w1ll be a perfect endmg to a perfect year Ellen W1seman Faye Damel I-I1stor1ans 11 O . , . , I . 1 ' , .- , . . , .
