Tom Bruce I0 CLASS HISTORY Just l1ke other poor lnnocent unsuspectmg 1nfants of s1x years all 34 of us were thrust unmerc1fully 1nto the f1rst grade w1th poor M1ss Paullne' as our teacher We soon learned that school wasn't what lt was cracked up to be But somehow we managed to get through seven grades mark1ng the end of our grammar school educat1on As a f1tt1ng cl1max to those years we were awarded cer t1f1cates We made h1story that day because we were the last seventh grade to be so honored But then there was a br1ght gleam 1n our sk1es We would report to H1gh School the next year What an honor It seemed to be lmmed1ately we acqu1red the d1gn1ty typ1cal of all Fresh men Our class has had an unusual h1story due to the trans1t1onal per1od 1n our educat1on As a Sophomore class we assumed re spons1b1l1t1es ord1nar1ly g1ven to the .Tumors Among these were candy and ball game concess1ons a play L1fe at Aunt M1nn1e's ' and Apr1l Showers as our annual banquet Durlng our Jun1or year we had no upp r classmen to 'boss' us around so we d1d what we pleased We presented a play Calm Yourself ' It was a comedy and went over b1g Now at last we were SCHIOTS' Our class was composed of 10 members of wh1ch there were seven g1rls and three boys F1ve of our members Tom Bruce Roulf Stephens Ann Ivey Mary Parker and Dorothy Bush had been enrolled m R1chland School s1nce the f1rst grade The other members of our pre sent class were June Monfort Buddy M1mbs Lucy Parlsh Mar1ane French and M1ldred Hall W1th the help of our adv1ser Mrs Parks we all took an act1ve part 1n our Sen1or act1v1t1es wh1ch 1ncluded square dances barbecues subscr1pt1on and Chrlstmas card campa1gns Aga1n we d1d the unusual by sponsorlng two plays These numerous act1v1t1es were for the purpose of f1n anclng a tr1p at the close of our h1gh school days Appropr1ate graduat1on exerc1ses w1th the award1ng of d1plomas enabled us to take our places w1th the other great men and women of the world Dorothy Bush H1 stor1an 11 l Y . . . I ' u a - I CLASS PROPH ECY The last one had been klssed and tucked 1nto bed I was look1ng forward to that grand per1od of t1me of peaceful bl1ss when there are no crles no slgns no tr1cycles roarmg over me and no arguments to settle Suddenly my husband looked up from h1s even1ng paper and sa1d ' Honey I almost forgot to g1ve you th1s letter wh1ch came to the offlce today I 1nspected the envelope before open1ng lt It was from New York C1ty but from whom could It be? I knew no one 1U New York but the wr1t1ng was strangely fam1l1ar The letter read ' Dear Mar1anne Just thlnk' Ten long years have passed s1nce our wonder ful days at R H S I know that most of you have marr1ed and fulf1lled your amb1t1ons but loslng contact 1S an awful thmg It Just occurred to me that I wanted to see each of you personally Please attend a class reun1on to be held at the Waldorf Astor1a on June 6 1962 at 6 o clock Years raced backward 1n m1nd How odd lt seemed that I was th1nk1ng of teachers books and pals 1nstead of husband food and baby formulas How would each look? Had ten years made such a d1fference 'P After days of preparat1on and 1nstruct1on for the ch1ld ren s nurse my husband and I drove to the fash1onable Waldorf 1n New York C1ty We arrlved early but we were met by our charrnmg hostess Ann Ivey whom t1rne had changed very l1ttle There was that same enchantlng sm1le but an a1r of soph1st1cat1on had been added to the smart New York secretary of a well establlshed f1rm Her career was number one on her 11st parade There had been several love affa1rs but noth1ng ser1ous We were s1tt1ng 1n the lobby when suddenly two fam1l1ar faces appeared through the sw1ng1ng doors My goodness' I looked aga1n and recogn1zed Dorothy Bush and her husband Beh1nd them were four of the cutest lxttle boys I had ever seen Dorothy looked as sweet as ever but she Sa1d she de fxmtely was not gett1ng the beauty naps that she pmed for Beh1nd them was a strangely fam1l1ar couple N ' It 17 1 ! . . , . . . O. couldn't be l1ttle June who was so t1ny A second look told me that lt was she plus forty pounds plus Tom Bruce They were starr1ng 1n a mus1cal comedy s1ng1ng as well as ever June had left hubby at home to take care of the ch1ldren a f1ve year old son and two year old daughter Next came a very unfarmllar brunette Wlth a dom1neer1ng a1r No th1s surely wasn't one of us Tagg1ng behlnd was Buddy M1mbs looklng very soulful eyed and hugglng her pe klngnese She had Buddy under very good control but he d1dn't seem to mmd too much Wh1le wa1t1ng for the others of the group I p1cked up the New York Tunes where I read that our old pal R E Drew had been made an admxral 1n the Navy I also not1ced the plcture of a very famous wrlter Why that sweet lookmg gal was our Lucy She had wr1tten a novel wh1ch was the most spectacular s1nce 'Gone W1th the Wrnd W1th Lucy s 1ntellectual ab1l1t1CS she hadn't had tzme for matrlmony but she had many sultors Our hostess called us 1nto the d1n1ng room We were all seated when a mere sl1p of a g1r1 m ma1d's umform rushed n ' Oh goodness' Not Ora the ma1d It was l1ttle Mary Parker who was a model Glgghng fam1l1arly she Sald I most forgot our reun1on and d1dn't have t1me to change A very d1gn1f1ed head wa1ter came 1n to see 1f the servlce was as lt should be and as he sm1led I recogxuzed our Roulf He was a famous racer who worked here at n1ght Where was Mlldred Hall? Ann sa1d that she had become a nurse and was on nrght duty W1th an elderly lady It was rumored that she had already sa1d Yes ' to a certaln young doctor After a gala even1ng we bade good bye to each other L1ttle tears trlckled down my cheeks when I thought of the wonderful days spent 1n dear old R1ChlaDd Hlgh together We each knew the others good and bad tralts yet we rema1ned pals Just the same I wonder If my ch1ldren 1n 1972 w1ll poss1bly have the fun we had back 1n '52 Mar1anne French Prophet 13 . .
