To think that it is already one and a half years since I first happened to learn about AFS. It was at the time that an AFS returnee of our school talked about her wonderful experiences in front of the whole student body in the summertime of 1956. She talked of many things about her staying in the United States as an AFS student. The thing that attracted me most was furthering good will among nations by exchanging students. At that moment I decided that I should come to the United States as an AFS student, as one of the followers of this tremendous idea. It is really amazing to learn that there are 1039 foreign students from 29 different countries who are staying in the United States this year as AFS exchange students. I'm happy to be staying at this little town, Richland, after having lived in a large city. QMy home town, Kobe, has about one million popuIation.j It had been my desire to live at a kind of neat town like Richland. Yet I prefer our mountains behind the city covered with plentiful trees and flowers rather than a dry desert around town. I'm glad that I've found the really nice A, F, and S The way I feel about it is nice Americans, Family, and School. I had never expected to be welcomed so much by people here. They are kind to me, too. The Roberts' family with whom I'm staying is just wonderful. I'm lucky enough to have seen no difference in the way how parents bring up their children. Col-I-Ii is one of the most wonderful high schools that I've ever seen. Generally speaking, it is more well-equipped than my high school, Kobe Upper Secondary School. fUsuaIIy called RUSS- besides, kuss in German means kiss.j There are many fine teachers in Col-I-Ii. I like all of them. The students are nice. They are more polite and refined than I had expected before I came here. Col-Hi students ask me often times if Teddy is my real name. Teddy is not my real name. I made it by using my te sound in the beginning of my real name so that you may call me more easily and friendly. I'm enjoying staying here. Ityery day I have lots of fun in something. I'lI never forget this wonderful period of my life at Col-Ili. The activity was called Operation Weed and held on October 20. 1957. It WHS 11 hifi success with more than two-hundred kids turning out to work. The areas were divided into sections and team captains were assigned to each section. The weeds were raked and piled.
