Richfield, One Of The Notions Best National Award Of Excellence The award ceremony in Washington D C. on August 27, was the final step in the rigorous process roword Richfield's being announced as one of the no rion's most successful secondary schools in America. Our of 555 schools across the notion originally nominated, only 202 public junior and senior high schools achieved that status. According to the Secretory of Education, T.H. Dell, these schools hove demonstrated that they foster maximum student development and learning, pay coreful attention to the educational needs of all their students, and ore committed to overcoming obstacles and sustaining an alreody high quality program. The long process began in January of 1983 when the odminisrrarion completed a 21-poge application from the U S. Department of Education. Then the Minnesota Office of Education screened the applicants in order to nominate eighr schools. Next, two separate ponels in Washington D.C. met to consider four of the eighr schools for valtdarion visits. The two-day visitation evaluation was conducted in May of 1983 by Dr. Dorothy Shipman from Dali Stare University. Her purpose was to confirm the information given in the application and to inspect the building and programs. She also observed more than 50 dosses and interviewed students, teachers, parents, and staff to get their feelings about Richfield High School. In June, the U.S. Department of Education announced rhor 114 senior high schools would receive recognition. Among them, Richfield ond Edina, the only schools from Minnesota, were to be honored. At the presentation, Superintendent Lowell Larson, Doord of Education Chairmon Dob Lindgren, ond Principal Richard Moos represented Richfield High School. The overwhelming pride felt by them was best expressed by Mr. Moos when he exclaimed, This is one of the greatest championships Richfield hos ever won!
