Hardly a day went by that someone’s ghetto blaster or radio wasn’t heard echoing through the halls. Many students spent their afternoons working in order to get money for a new stero or tape deck and albums to play on them. Concerts also left a big hole in the pockets of many students, but it was all worth it. Whether it was acid rock or an orchestral symphony, music involved everyone. 2 Introduction I______________________________________________________ 1. Like many other first days, the sophomores were lost, the juniors were glad they weren’t sophomores, and the seniors were enjoying their last first day.” It didn’t take long before everyone was settled into his her new schedule and the excitement of meeting new people and seeing old friends faded away. Then it was time for business. There were class officers to elect, a newspaper to run, sports to be played, pictures to be taken, homecoming festivities to be planned, and school rings to be ordered. Students had become involved in their new classes and activities, and another beginning had ended. 1. Sophomores purchase their school rings. 2. Mr. Maas reported that all of our athletic teams were doing extremely well, and the week provided a chance to see the livelier side of everyone. On Wednesday night, the excitement was high as Jeff Scott and Nancy Wood announced the 1981 Homecoming Queen, Barb Ketchem. Before the pep test on Friday, seniors, cheerleaders, and band members marched through the halls enthusiastically. Friday night the undefeated Spartan football team continued its record by defeating St. Louis Park 20-0. Homecoming week ended with the dance on Saturday night. The theme of the dance was The Best of Times, and couples danced -J to the music of Nightline. m Homecoming 1. Queen Barb wearing the royal napkin. 2. These could be found wearing everything from Calvin Klien’s skin-tight fashion jeans, to a good, old, comfortable pair of Lee’s or Levi’s. However, a new style was seen as well on a few of the more daring girls. Knickers, a popular item many years ago, made a comback in 81-82. Rainbows also topped the charts. You could find rainbows everywhere from shirts to shoelaces. Last, but not least, preppies and alligator fans, although not as popular as last year, still roamed the halls on any given day. a j 16 Fads And Fashions 1. Sheila Roach models her knickers 2. This was one of the many calls to follow while square dancing at the Sadie Hawkins Dance this year. Square dancing wasn’t the only thing to do at the dance. Two preachers” were brought in just for the occasion so that those couples who felt the urge could get hitched. The band, Sonfire, played a variety of music, which gave couples the opportunity to dance fast-paced polkas or rest their feet with slow dancing for two. Couples also enjoyed just sitting and watching the festivities, but the guys had to be careful so that they didn’t get thrown in jail. The dance was held on December 12, and the theme was You’re So Right.’’ It was a truly exciting and memorable experience. Sadie Hawkins 19 Fire and Ice Week was another busy week at RHS. It began with a Rock Fest in the auditorium, featuring two student bands. The Special Games included ping-pong, a tree-throw contest, and the traditional broom-ball games. The student champions tied the faculty team 1-1, breaking the faculty's winning streak. Sophomore Troy Grenges and Junio Dick Christopher were crowned along with Senior King Mike McGraw. Thursday’s Variety Show featured the Seventieth Street Singers, Ta-paires, Tapettes. Silks, and other talented individuals and groups. The Fire and Ice dance on Friday night marked the conclusion of the week, with couples swaying to the music of the Night Riders. 20 Fire And Ice 1. Sandy, the Sleepy Coal Miner. 2. Fire And lce 21 22 Wlnte Wonderland Language Arts This year, English students were once again trained in the art of procrastination. All became experts in writing themes at the last possible minute. Besides theme writing, there were speeches to give and books to read. One change that the Language Arts Department had this year was the discontinuance of the elective program. All students had to enroll in a full year traditional English class. In the words of one English student, This was the most exciting year I’ve ever had! For reasons unknown, the student wished not to be identified. 1. English students vigorously pursuing their studies. 2. Esther Ivory thinks English is no laughing matter. 3. Language Arts 27 28 Soc al Studies The past, the present, and the future. All these and more were studied by students in RHS’s Social Studies classes. Sophomores studied mainly America’s past for two trimesters, with the chance to get to the present during third trimester. Juniors studied the world's past for the first trimester and other world electives second and third trimesters. Seniors studied courses dealing with social problems in the past, present, and future. Special films and speakers enhanced the seniors’ classes. Psychology was a popular elective, captivating the minds of many seniors. Psychology students studied how people behave and even used operant conditioning on their fellow classmates. If anyone’s behavior changed this past year, he may have had a friend in Psychology conditioning them. Lee Covart Stan DeFreese Hubert Hanson Br an Kispert Once again, an effort was made to find the most interesting thing that occured in the Math Department. However, this year the attempt met with failure One event that was new was that Mr. Leary was back after having been on sabbatical. Although the math students welcomed his return, after one of his tests his new Acc. Math 12 students declined to talk about it. Another change was that for the first time, sophomores had to pass a Basic Mathematical Skills Test before entering the high school. Previously, students didn’t have to have any math at RHS. But this year, those students who didn’t pass each section of the test had to take a no-credit Basic Math class until they could pass the section they had failed. Remember sophomores, 1 + 1 = 2, not 3! Mathemat cs 31 Barry Bain Bob Chemberlm Wayne Danielson Duane Femrite Nancy Houtkooper Don Klausen Bob Lunde Joe Michel John Oberstar Ralph Schwictenberg Science For those who thought a cell was only a room for prisoners, a mole was just a little animal, or Newton’s Laws dealt solely with figs, the RHS science program held many surprises. In sophomore biology, students learned about cells, genetics, and changes in life. Juniors and seniors had the chance to learn more about their biological selves if they took Anatomy and Physiology. For some reason, not all were pleased with what they discovered. Chemistry was offered in three levels: General, College Prep, and General College Chemistry. Students who took chemistry learned about moles, equilibrium, and chemical reactions. The students’ reactions were generally favorable to this area of science. General, Project, and PSSC were the three levels of physics offered. Topics studied included Newton’s Laws, momentum, and radiation. Many of the students themselves radiated energy as they studied this course. 32 Sconce In the Foreign Language Program students were offered courses in French, German, and Spanish. Class difficulty varied from courses for students who had no previous knowledge of the language to classes which were conducted exclusively in the language that was being studied. In addition to reading, speaking, and writing a foreign language, students studied the country’s culture, history, music, traditions, and values. To sponsor their activities, foreign language students sold many different types of items. French students sold red and white carnations. Spanish students sold licorice. German students sold donuts and gummy bears. Outings to restaurants, which specialized in foreign food, were popular activities for foreign language students. In December there was a Career Day Program during which students listened to speakers who explained how a foreign language could be applied to a career in business, education, or government. Holidays, such as Christmas, were approached with enthusiasm, as they were celebrated according to the customs of various countries. 34 Foreign Languages Foreign Languages Bob Bren Trina Keller Rudy Martlgnacco Pat Rude Jayne Sjostrom 1. Foreign Languages 35 The Art Department at RHS maintained the tradition of offering a wide variety of courses. The basic courses fell within the areas of Commercial Arts, Fine Arts, and Crafts. Students were able to take classes such as Design, Advertising. Pottery, Sculpture. Lettering and Silk Screen. For students who intended on expanding their knowledge in art, there were advanced courses offered including Studio courses for seniors. For many, the art courses at RHS were taken to prepare for careers in art. For others, the courses were taken to expand and express their talents. 1. Rod Haugen Don Johnson Warren Wheaton 30 Industrial Arts Industrial Arts In the Industrial Arts wing students explored the many facets of electronics, woodworking, and many other classes. Basically, the only new aspect of the department was the enrollment of the first girls in the small-engines class. Industrial Arts 39 Home Arts The Home Arts courses were geared toward personal living, and home and family life. Courses on Marriage and Family Life, Child Development, Housing and Home Furnishings, and You and the Consumer all helped to prepare students for the future. There were the five levels of clothing and foods courses to satisfy a student's needs. Whether planning a career in Home Arts or not, everybody could find a course to take. 1. It’s hard to imagine because dedicated band members shared their talent and enthusiasism at as many games as possible. Under the direction of Mr. Lundahl, Rich Gustafson, and Nancy Duke, the band entertained the players and spectators of various sports several times a week. The stage band continued holding its 6:30 a.m. practices twice a week, under the direction of James Peitzman. Its hard work and practice resulted in great performances by the stage band throughout the year. Band 43 Choir The Fall Concert marked the debut for the Concert Choir’s new outfits and the results of the new rehearsal format. The orchestra, Seventieth Street Singers, Girls’ Chorus, and the Eighth and Ninth Grade Choirs from West Middle School were also featured. Students prepared a great variety of music for the concert, but the culmination of the evening was The Creation by Haydn, performed by the combined high school choirs and orchestra. The new look for the Concert Choir consisted of dark brown tuxedos with black velvet vests for the men and very dressy, royal blue dresses for the women. Last year the Girls’ Chorus members sewed matching cranberry skirts, which they wore again this year, with white blouses. All of these outfits were purchased with money from fund-raisers and concert donations from the past several years. A new rehearsal format for Concert Choir was adopted this year to expand choral experiences, to provide for more variety, and to allow for more help for the individual students. Four days a week, a three-sectioned rehearsal was held, with a full choir period scheduled every Friday. This plan resulted in a Men’s Barbershop Chorus, a Women’s Barbershop Chorus, in addition to traditional chorus. 1. Dan Hansen and Kris Broze make a cute couple. 2. To help support its activities, members sold popcorn and candy. During each trimester, the orchestra performed a concert beginning with the Fall Festival, in conjunction with the choir. The next few months were spent preparing for the Concerto Concert, which featured many student soloists. The highlight of the year came with the exchanged trip with the International Falls Orchestra. In March the International Falls Orchestra visited RHS for a combined concert. In May the RHS Orchestra returned the favor with an overnight trip to International Falls. Many students found enjoyment participating in the smaller groups. A special group of volunteers, made up the Spartan Strings, performed at many banquets and receptions during the school year. Many individuals participated in the pit orchestra for the musical Oliver. The year came to a close with the final performance at the graduation ceremony. Orchestra 46 Orchesira Noel Gagnon 1. Among these were Typing, Accounting, Recordkeeping, Shorthand, The Law and You, Consumer Affairs, Business Study, and Word Processing. The newest course was Word Processing, offered any trimester as an independent study course. It involved combining text editing, typewriting, and machine transcription. Students learned to operate the Electronic 60 Typewriter, and to use the TEB 401 Olivetti Word Processing Typewriter. Ruth Dittes Blackstad Jack Campbell Frank Jordan Etoise Pederson Business Education 49 Richfield students had an opportunity to obtain valuable vocational training during their high school years at the Suburban Hennepin County Vocational Technical School in Eden Prairie. They were bused there for morning or afternoon classes, which were worth three credits. They attended social studies and an English class at the high school and had their choice of an elective or a study hall. Mr. Ahlbom, who was in charge of the Vo Tech program, stated, “The program is a valuable tool because of the experience and the high job placement record of the program.” 1. The e a confusing mess 2. Scoff Drier is good with a hammer. 3. Gina and friends examine their project. 4. About 375 students took the Photography classes during the year. Beginning Photography started out with the history of photography, cameras and progressed through developing. processing, and making prints. Advanced Photography Class cowered adjusting the camera lenses and the light meter. Students learned color printing and developing and special effects. Many students benefited from their hard work and developed valuable skills in photography. 1. Mr. Nelson helps students. 2. Brain work in photography. 3. Student Photography 4. Photography isn't just snapping pictures. 5. Darrell Corazalia looks over developing directions. Photography SI Physical Education Many RHS students enjoyed taking a break from the routine classes of the day. Available to these students were courses in the Phy-Ed Department. Not only was there the usual required sophomore class, but also a variety of elective courses. The elective course offerings ranged from team sports to individual activities. By taking phy-ed courses, students were able to take advantage of the gyms and various equipment. RHS is fortunate to have several gyms with special equipment, such as the weight room and tumbling gym. Phy-Ed classes offered students enjoyment as well as allowing them to build skills and stay fit and healthy. 1. Time out for homage to the volleyball god. 2. Game Point 3. Many sophomores found Drivers’ Education to be a very important part of their first year at RHS. During the trimester, students studied the Minnesota Driving Rules and Regulations manual to learn the rules of the road. They also discovered the importance of drivers’ attitudes and their responsibilities. Ten hours of this program were spent in the simulators, the part which most students enjoyed. After completing the course, students participated in a behind the wheel program and finally were able to take the Minnesota State Driver’s test. Vance Crosby Lyle Lewis 54 Drivers’ Education Healthful Living This year the RHS health program took on a new dimension. One new aspect of the class was its new name, ‘‘Healthful Living.” The basic concepts of the class were lifestyles and attitudes. The traditional curriculum. including units on nutrition and physical fitness, was used in addition to a Health Fair in February at which students were able to learn about diseases. The Alternative program was used again this year. This program allows junior high students to see the advantages of staying straight. The most apparent addition was the use of aTV program called On The Level. This series was used in promoting teenagers’ personal and social growth. 1. Mr. Crosby at the controls. 2. Mr. Gwinn talks to a health class. 3. Don't hit anything! 4. A small group discussion. Healthful Living 55 Work Program Being involved in the Work Program wasn’t as easy as it seemed. After being interviewed by The Vocational Screening Committee, students were placed in the appropriate aspects of the program: work development, work experience, and CETA. The program provided classroom experiences as well as on-the-job training. The Vocational Director was Mr. Sher, and the Program Coordinators were Mrs. Taft, Mr. Gilbert. Mr. Johnson. Mr. Ek, and Mr. Hess. The Work Program was not all work. Extra activities were fund-raising and social activities like banquets, awards, and parties. The Work Program was an excellent chance for students to learn and experience the business field and have a good time doing it. 56 Work Program Lowell Ek Fred Gilbert Ken Hess Dick Johnson David Sher Barbara Tall 1. This was done both at the games and at the pep tests as well as by fund raisers. They generated spirit in the teams with special “love letters” for each player before the homecoming games, TPing the captains’ houses, and making buttons for each game. The girls practiced four days a week during the summer and three days a week during the school year. The money raised by fund raisers was used for a banquet at the end of the year at an unknown location. The participation in school, meeting new people, and the satisfaction of helping out the teams gave the cheerleaders a rewarding experience that will be fondly remembered throughout each girl’s life. Cheerteaders 65 Tapaires This year the RHS Tapaires had a new look: addition of more girls: a new advisor, Mrs. Abele; and new letters with each girl’s name for their uniforms. The Tapaires were kept busy with their many performances at football games, basketball games, hockey games, pep tests, Indoor Marching Band Concert, Variety Show, and Fire and Ice Coronation. Their fundraisers helped to raise money to get jackets and to go to competitions. Throughout their hard work, the girls had a lot of fun, including potlucks before games, early breakfasts, and being a part of the school spirit. Under advisor Debbie Kelzemberg, the Tapettes began practice early in the summer. They worked hard throughout the year to achieve perfection. The Tapettes were first featured at the football’s Broadway Halftime, dancing to New York, New York. They continued to be seen at basketball, hockey games, and the Fire and Ice Variety Show. They all enjoyed the year and the many new friendships. 1. Tapettes step out in style. 2. The 1981-82 Tapettes: Front Row: S. Seagren. A. Yates. K. Gordon. J. Olson. L. Bergman, T. Limpert. P. This year there were five girls, advised by Joan Pruzinski The girls in Silks said this activity was a lot of fun and challenging because they made up their own routines as well as performed them. This year his question brought about another great RHS Speech Team. Two outstanding members of the team were Lars Savolainen and Esther Ivory. The team competed in seven tournaments, some of which involved staying for a weekend in another city. Before the tournaments, though, much preparation was needed, such as many after-school sessions with Mr. Curry, Mike Oiseth, and Janet Jensen, and selling a lot of M M’s. 70 Speech 1. National Honor Society National Honor Society members are elected on the basis of scholarship, leadership, service and character. It is a high honor which not many experience. To be elected in the Honor Society in one’s junior year, one must have been in the top 10% of the ratings by teachers. Seniors elected in the Society had to be in the top 15% of the ratings. The 39 returning seniors. 67 new seniors and 35 junior members began the year with a Brownie Tea (what else?). The Induction Ceremony was held on March 15. with a dinner preceding the ceremony. NHS members worked in the concession stand during a basketball game and sold singing valentines the week before Valentine’s Day. Attending the Richfield in Motion breakfast meetings were the Student Senate, Student Council. Administration, and members of the Parent Advisory Board. Some of the problems discussed were littering, vandalism, and the parking problem. The well-organized meetings proved to be a useful goal-setting tool. 1. Mr. Walker eating his glasses. 2. They worked hard throughout the year in their constant battle against litter. The Senate also boosted school spirit through the slave auctions. Homecoming Queen Candidates, football players, and soccer players were sold for one day to the highest bidder. Many other problems and projects were tackled by the elected student representatives in order to better the school. Officers for 1981-82 were: President - Rob Wherley Vice-President - Becky Meyerson Secretary - Teri Heller Treasurer - Karen Bloomberg Chairpersons - Beth Murray Debbie Ziemkowski Student Senate 77 The Student Council, which is a branch of the Student Government, includes students, faculty members, and administrators. The Council met regularly and discussed concerns, problems and plans for the school. “Richfield in Motion was only one way in which students got involved in their school and its relation to the community. Involvement was a key word for Student Council members. 78 Student Council Student Council Class Officers HWH Do you ever wonder who is behind such things as the Sadie Hawkins Dance and all the Fire and Ice festivities? These are two of the responsibilities which fell on the Senior Class Officers. They were also responsible for running committee meetings. The Junior-Senior Prom planning was the responsibility of the Junior Class Officers, who had to work hard to make it a success. Another main concern of the class officers this year was the introduction of ninth graders into the high school next year. The class officers worked hard to make the dances successful. Every Monday night a group of RHS kids and some Young Life leaders got together to have some laughs, sing a few songs, and learn about Jesus Christ in their lives. Another tradition of Young Life was early morning breakfasts at Perkins every Friday. Many students also enjoyed going to Castaway, a Young Life camp, over MEA weekend and to Carleton College for a week last summer. The fun of Young Life and its easy-going approach to religion made it a popular extra-curricular activity for students throughout the year. 1. Just wait 'till I get him! 2. Participants were taught about Christian approaches to everyday problems, trained in using those approaches. and used to help others with their problems. Students who went to Campus Life participated in many activities. They had crazy tournaments, organized a Burger Bash, made a movie, went skiing, and went to Florida over spring break, among other activities. Why do students go to Campus Life? One student summed it up, saying, “I go because it's fun. because I learn things, and because I like the people. Campus Life 8i Aurean 82 Aurean Confusion and frustration filled the tiny, windowless dungeon as deadline after nerve-wracking deadline struck with devastating force. The hardy souls of the Aurean staff withstood this traumatic pressure, however. and finally succeeded in piecing together a yearbook. Under the competent direction of Editor-in-Chief Nancy Wood, the diverse group of editors was able to tolerate each other’s company long enough to get the job done. At times this seemed almost impossible, but Mother Aurean’s benevolent guidance gave everyone the strength she he needed to put up with each other until the seemingly endless days of checking and rechecking layouts and copy sheets were over. Each editor added his or her own special touch to the seventh mod zoo. Sue dazzled everyone with her intelligence and efficiency, while Kathi added the dedicated, though somewhat messy, support necessary. Rita’s ambition was evident as she lounged on her file cabinet, but it almost destroyed a wall. Nancy Lee had an eerie sense of always knowing what had to be done and then not doing it. The tireless efforts of Tammy really kept things going, and Karen’s happiness made even the gloomiest of deadlines almost bright. Finally, putting up with all of this, were Anne and Tim, trusted advisors to her Royal Highness Wood. We all owe these amazing human beings our unbounded gratitude. The Spotlite staff, numbering an infintesi-mal five, began the business of recreating the paper. School began and so to did the Football Player's crash course in layouts and headlines. The editors were soon swamped by perpetual paperwork and short deadlines. Galley proofs, page paste-ups, headlines that were half a count over, and stories that never came in. All these became a daily frustration which gave many an editor ulcers at deadline time. It also prompted many mental health days for all concerned. The Spotlite’s editors, led by Editor-in-Chief Barb Buck, were seniors Tammi Ness. Kay Pues, and Linda Wachter, and junior Bob Zemke. Bruce Killiam juggled unintelligible photo assignments, while Tom Johnson tried to figure out what a business manager was. Through all eight issues and perpetual brainstorming sessions, the editors were watched over by the new Spotlite advisor Mr. Dennis Kroger. The requirements for the job were to be honest and to be able to count. The ticket sellers received a grade and a service credit. There were some benefits to being a ticket seller such as free tickets to home games, a study hall if there is nothing to sell, and going out at the end of each trimester. Two of their major projects were a Shoplifting Prevention Program and a Learn and Earn Project. The Shoplifting Prevention Program involved writing and distributing pamphlets, taking surveys, and working with the police to learn basic prevention techniques. The other major project was the Sunshine Gift Shop, which was set up in Room 102 for a week. The shop was run just like a small business, with a board of directors, stock sales, payrolls, and the actual purchase and sales of merchandise. Belonging to DECA didn’t just mean a lot of work. The group got together for fun and relaxing activities, too, like snowtubing, going on hayrides, and initiating new members. Among the places of business that took part in the program were National School Studios, Richfield State Agency, Beneficial Loan Thrift, and The Edina Eye Clinic. Along with their jobs, the girls had fun with group activities such as electing officers — President The-rese Slott, Vice-President Dawn Hermstad, Secretary Debbie Frank, and Treasurers Julie Donovan and Dawn Loney — and competing in regional, state and national competitions. Throughout the year besides attending school, they participated in a Christmas bazaar and a pop sale to raise money for AFS. Richfield sends between three and six students to foreign countries through AFS each year. One Richfield student Ginny Johnson, a senior, spent a good part of the year in Thailand. AFS 93 I • 94 Sporls PERFORMANCES Sports 95 Ten girls and eighteen boys made up this year’s slalom ski teams. The teams were led by Captains Sally Amos and Todd Miller and were coached by Roger Tadsen, who was assisted by Patti Soderberg and Paul Amos. The boys’ team had a building year, while the girls’ team continued to be strong, with four girls having returned from the previous year’s State Tournament team. Although the teams went up against tough competition in the Lake Conference, they were able to be competitive because they worked very hard, practicing even when the wind-chill factor was 65 degrees below zero. Along with conference meets, the skiers skied in non-conference scrimmages, skied in a sectional meet, had a two-day racing camp at Welch Village, and ended the season with a trip to Lutsen. All of these activities helped the skiers have a good season. How could slalom skiing help the skiers? Coach Tadsen commented, “My coaching philosophy is to take recreational skiers — teach them to race so they can become better recreational skiers for the rest of their lives. Skiing is a lifetime sport. 96 Slatom Skiing Slalom Skiing 1. Sally Amos skis down the slope. 2. Captain Sally Amos. 3. Look oot below! 4. Chris Flahaven carries some flags. 5. Slalom Skiing 97 The fall season was filled with excitement as the Richfield Spartan Football Team started its season. Though Richfield didn’t become the conference champion, the team put up a good fight. The game at Burnsville proved Richfield’s strength with a 14-7 win in overtime for the Spartans. Throughout the season, only a few touchdowns were given up by the mighty Spartans. The defensive line really knew how to “hold its ground.” It demonstrated this when it held the one yard line against Edina for three downs. Once again Richfield showed a fine quality of performance with another great season. It was an important part of the 1981-82 school year. 1. Jim Bach dodges a tackier. 2. Under the coaching of Dale Strom, the team achieved a record of 7-5-6. Through the dedication and hard work of both players and coaches, the team reached a respectable standing. Throughout the season, the players worked at improving their skills and learning to play well together. Thanks to their efforts, they enjoyed a fun and profitable season. While two girls, Terry Kostelnik and Shelly Spragg ran very well all year, the team needed five members to compete as an official team. The team practiced from the beginning of the school year until the Regions on October 21, when the RHS boys won first place. Captain Paul Gisselquist came in first with Brooks Herrboldt close behind, taking third. Winning regions qualified the boys to compete in State. The Junior Varsity Team placed second in its tournament. 106 Girls' Volleyball Girls’ Volleyball Girls' Volleyball 107 Girls’ Tennis Over the 1981 season the Girls’ Tennis Team, coached by Claudia Myers, improved as a whole. Its hard work during practice after school paid off in its success as a team. Also, by refining their skills, there was a noticeable improvement by individual players. The season was marked by several outstanding performances. Gail Zyl-kowski and Anne Skwira made it to the regional quarter-finals in doubles. Also, the devotion and leadership of Marit Berntson and Pam Wong boosted the team. Captains for 1981 were Pam Wong and Marit Berntson. 108 GWs' Tenms 1. Anne Skwira is sooo big. 2. The few seniors were the leaders and proved to be consistent players on the squad. The juniors found their positions tough to fill. They continued to work throughout the year and show potential for seasons ahead. During the season, the players progressed and matured as a team and as individuals. The new coaches were Varsity Coach Vance Crosby and Junior Varsity Coach Harold Ahlbom. The new attitude was positive and encouraged the team to work harder. The captains for the 81-82 season were Missy Niemackl and Janet Corbett. Early in the season, the Spartans showed promise of becoming one of the top teams in the tough Lake South Conference, and they didn’t let the fans down. Led by Tri-Captains Jeff Peterson, Shawn Shelby, and Tom Ward, the team demonstrated the success they could achieve through co-operation. After losing only two seniors from last year, the 1982 team had a strong sense of unity gained from over two years of playing together. One of the essential ingredients for a winning team is a loyalty and love for the game, and this year’s team certainly had that. The Richfield Spartans can look back on a successful and satisfying hockey season. 116 Hockey 1. Moving the puck steadily toward the goal. 2. Tri-Captains Jett Peterson. Shawn Shelby, and Tom Ward 3. Hockey 117 The Cross-Country Ski Team worked exceptionally hard preparing for and skiing in what turned out to be a very cold season. Hardy skiers braved the frigid below-zero temperatures and faced the freezing wind to participate in one of the only remaining outdoor winter sports. Members of the team could be seen diligently waxing their skis in the hall outside the ski room after school, putting on just the right kind of wax for that day’s snow conditions. One noticeable difference in this year’s ski team was its change in attitude. Whereas in years past, the emphasis during skiing was to have fun as well as to be competitive, this year the emphasis shifted more toward competition. In order to turn the team into a highly competitive group, the members were put on a strict and rigorous training program by their coaches. While many members quit, the ones that remained enjoyed skiing on the first good snow in several years. Coaches for 1982 were Rudi Martignacco and Karl Ermisch. 118 Cross-Country Skiing 1. Jones, and Kim Olson, they made up the RHS gymnastics team. For competition, the team was split up into Varsity and Junior Varsity, with some girls competing on both levels. Under the leadership of Co-Captains Chris Nieder, and Jane Thornton, the team had several meets, both home and away throughout the season. Strong team members included Seniors Chris Nieder, and Laura Mayer, Junior Anne Lasserud, and Freshman Julie Jablonski. Gymnastics 121 Wrestling 122 Wre$tling It was another exciting year for the wrestling team. Led by Captains Jim Lynch and Jim Luzar, the team finished the season with an outstanding record. With many returning lettermen. this fine showing was no surprise. Among them was Jim Luzar heavy-weight State Champion of 1981. Coach Camp stated, “This is the best team we’ve had since I started coaching at Richfield.” There were many outstanding performances, showing the depth of the Richfield team. About two-thirds of the team were juniors, so next year will surely be another good year for Richfield. 1. Brian Trappe wrestles opponent. 2. The Intramural Sports would have been your answer. Many students wanting tough competition formed teams to go against some good and bad opponents. The IM Program offered football, floor hockey, broomball, softball, and home-base-challenge volleyball. Whether students wanted exercise, competition, or the thrill of victory, IM was an excellent opportunity for them to meet friends and to break their daily routines. 1. This dedicated group called The Early Risers composed of faculty, students, and alumni played basketball from 6:30-7:20 every morning before school. If you thought it was too rough to go against the veteran experts, Dr. Grimmer and Mr. Danielson and other club members, you guessed wrong. Dr. Grimmer said, “Everyone is welcomed because the quality of play is markedly varied. So for some, they woke up early and took a shot at it. 1. An Early Riser goes up for the shot. 2. The administration, consisting of Mr. Maas, Principal; Mr. Walker. Administrative Assistant; Mr. Hare, Director of Instruction; and, Mr. Larson, Director of Administrative Services. spent the year attaining their goal. The main goal for this year was to evaluate the school in order for it to remain an accredited High School. Mr. Maas stressed the importance of graduating from an accredited school because some colleges will not accept students from non-accre-dited schools. Of course, the school will always have more than one goal for the year. However, distinguishing a major goal assists in maintaining our high school’s superior level. 1. Mr Richard Maas. RHS Principal. 2. Mr. Dick Walker. Administrative Assistant. 3. Mr Lowell Larson. Superintendent ot Schools. 4. Mr. James Hare. Director ot Instruction 5. Mr. Bruco Larson. Director ot Administrative Services. Administration 137 Social Services As usual, the RHS counselors started another busy school year, but this year proved to be even more hectic. Due to declining enrollment, Mr. Abelson left the high school and moved on to the bigger and better opportunities at East Middle School. However, the four remaining counselors continued to help students with endless schedule conflicts and future educational plans. Also of primary importance was the generous assistance given by the other members of the social service staff. These were the School Nurse Mrs. Kelley, the School Social Worker Mr. Gwinn. and the District Psychologist Dr. Grimmer, whose help was greatly appreciated. 1. Dr. Grimmer takes a fantasy break. 2. The media personnel and the secretaries had countless duties to accomplish each day, and the same number of duties had to be done by fewer people as the enrollment of the high school declined. Due to the retirement of Mildred Quinn, Marlene Sorensen became Mr. Maas’ new secretary. Without the cooperation of these people, the high school would cease to function properly. 1. Louise Knutson. Melissa SevokJ. lndex 227 Coda The curtain has fallen, and you’ve sung your last song at RHS. Now the show is finally over, and it’s time to leave the stage. But before you go, you take a final look back and remember the performances of the year. You remember the cold winter with record amounts of snow; you remember the day RHS actually closed because of the weather for the first time in years. You remember the games, the dances, and all the assignments you never thought you'd finish. As you look back, you see the good and the bad, the happy times and the sad. Now you’re ready to go out and solo in your own show in some other place. Yet, even when you’re far down the road, there’ll be one last note from RHS ringing forever in your memory.
