With the help of the cheerleaders, the students took part in class competition for the highly esteemed spirit stick. The drill team and band added rhythm and en- thusiasm with precision routine coordinated with the jazz and rock music. Various classes and clubs created and performed skits at each pep rally. a. These senior girls orga- nized pep rallies, attended home and out-of- town football games, led yells at basketball games and even served as bat girls for the base- ball team. The teachers spent a gru- eling two hours of practice on the highly polished, coordinated dance routine and were coached by members of the drill team. The Ramettes participated in each pep rally and foot- ball game. ln addition, the drill team performed at several of the basketball games during the winter months. The Ramettes continued their winning tradi- tion this year. Along with the band, the drill team received second place in the Parade of Cham- pions in Dallas during the fall. In january, the girls were awarded a rating of first in jazz routines and a second in high kick and props. With the opening of several T-Shirt shops around town, almost every club, group and team joined the act. At one time or another, nearly every stu- dent arrived at school adorned with a shirt that told who he was, to what he belonged andfor what he would do. Prac- tices were held at each of the high schools, with only short breaks at Thanksgiving and Christmas. It took two and a half months of hard work and late hours, but the end product made it all worth while. a. The blood supply on hand was critically low, and a new supply was urgently needed, At their request, the Student Council sponsored an emergency blood drive to restock supplies dwindled by holiday accidents. During a one-day drive, Rams donated over sev- enty pints of blood. This amount excluded those students who had been forced to receive a gamma globulin shot in the fall after having been exposed to hepatitus. a. Gridiron opponents in- cluded Longview and Biyan High Schools, both of which were rated on top at the time of the game. The Rams also faced Killeen 123, john Ty- ler 143 and Temple 193 during the course of the season. RHS lost out on the mythical city cham- pionship as well, losing to both Waco High and University. The Rams met defeat at the hands of Tyler High School and Corsicana. For the first time, the team boasted female trainers-Cay Dobias and Teresa Dickerson-to aid with minor injuries on the field. Competing against a flurry of teams with more height and depth, first-year coach Poo Welch's guys managed to end the season with a 10-25 overall record and a sixth place finish in district. Although this record does not reflect a great sea- son, 1976 began what, in many fans' eyes, seemed to be the start of a rebuilding program. a. At the end of regular season play, it appeared the Ramblers would be meeting Bryan in a play-off game. Then school officials discovered one of the play- ers was unknowingly attending RHS while living in the Connally High School district. When Uni- versity lnterscholastic League officials were noti- fied of the error, they ruled that all games in which the ineligible player participated must be forfeited.
