At state conventions Latin students from all over Texas compete in various contests, such as costume, classi- cal mythology, and derivatives. The school which earns the highest number of points in these contests is awarded a sweepstakes trophy. By participation in state and national conventions, the JCL helps to pro- mote interest in the study of Latin. Vox Arietum. a magazine published by JCL members of Richfield High School, also promotes interest in Latin. The purpose of this magazine is to advance knowledge about Roman civilization through stories on Roman life, culture, and customs. 185

The Pan American Student i if Forum consists of students tak- ing Spanish. The members of Los Voladores, the Richfield chapter of the PASF, strive to develop an understanding of all the peoples in the Western Hemi- sphere. This understanding helps to spread good feeling among the American nationalities. The chapters of the Pan Amer- ican Student Forum from nu- merous high schools meet each year at a state convention to share their knowledge and inter- est in Spanish. Such conventions encourage the learning of Span- ish as a medium of communica- tion. Charles Doan listens intently to a lesson in the language listening lab.
