The Space Age began with the launchings of Sputnik and Explorer . . . little red, green, and black lunch tokens went into circulation . . . the word in fashion was Chemise . . . football and basketball dis- trict championships went to the Eagles . . . Richardson's first permanent school ring was worn by this year's seniors . . . up- raised hands signaling V, for victory re- vived an old R.H.S. tradition . . . Dallas's modern Love Field terminal opened . . . the Eagles' Nestn came into being . . . Richardson and the nation fought off Asian flu . . . upon completion of the tennis courts, racquet fever skyrocketed . . . the words to the school song were revised . . . . . . And the Purple Spirit reigned over 1958, in every extra effort, every search- ing thought-or carefree laugh. The Purple Spirit is an unseen, but vital force in R.H.S. You felt it sometime this year-at a game. a dance, during a last-minute practice, or racing to a deadline. Now, Richardson High School is a part of youg and you gave some- thing of yourself to it, through this Spirit. The Purple Spirit was the theme of the yearg and so will it be the theme of this. the book of the year. 2 94 3 5:1 Q . 3 I i. 0 vs 4 5 , 5, ,, , L. The cheerleaders and Eaglette majorettes are chosen in a completely different manner from the band majorettes and band major. The cheerleaders are selected by a group of judges who view each girl's routine. All but six girls are eliminated, leaving two from each of the top three grades at R.H.S. The head cheerleader is chosen by secret ballot among the six girls, any possible tie being broken by the sponsor of the Eaglettes. The majorettes are se- lected in a similar manner. Band majorettes are selected by the band director after performing a routine. The drum major receives special training at a school during the summer preceding the year for which she is elected. Leading the Golden Eagle Band on the field for the second year is Marjorie Putnam, drum major. ...Q X I 1 nfl. A. .
