« « RICHARD WINN ACADEMY Winnsboro South Carolina Volume XIX We’re Building Our Pride The tornado of March 28, 1984, necessitated a massive building program at Richard Winn Academy. The efforts of many people made possible a fine new facility that reflects the excellence to which RWA has been dedicated for the nineteen years of its existence. This excellence is seen in the numerous ac- complishments of our students. For instance, an extremely high percentage of our graduates seek a higher education, and many receive college scholarships and advance place- ment. Our students consistently gain recognition in academic and music competition, as well as in athletic con- tests. This year Richard Winn has a National Merit Scholar. These accomplishments certainly reflect the dedication to excellence of everyone involved with this school. Ac- tually, the new buildings will symbolize the pride we have in the quality of our total program. Yes, we’re building at Richard Winn: We're Building Our Pride. We Dedicate Aerie ’85 to Mr. Taylor “Mr. Taylor? Dynamic! Our new school represents his length and courage. His smile ensures our children of his love while he guides them with a strong and steady hand. We love you.’r — Jackie Baker “All the times I have talked with Mr. Taylor, through discussions about class and student council activities, I have found him to be very friendly and understanding. He is devoutly interested in the students and what is best for them. He is an excellent headmaster, and I am glad we have had him as our leader.” — Peter Rambo Carroll Taylor is the driving force who has made the dif- ference between success or failure of Richard Winn Academy. — R. A. Westbrook Becaus'e of the person he is, the ideals he represents, and what he means to Richard Winn Academy, we dedicate Aerie '85 to F. Carroll Taylor, Headmaster, No one knows better than his wife, Joy, the endless hours Mr. Taylor gives to RWA. We deep- ly appreciate her help, support, and understanding. “D’s are not considered to be good in school, but the D’s of discipline, desire, determination, and above all, dedica- tion spell one thing — F. Carroll Taylor; and that’s an A+ for our school.” —Donna Miller In the seven years that Mr. Taylor has been at R.W.A., we have experienced growth in numbers, as well as in the physical plant. Of more importance to a successful school however, is a feeling of pride which he has generated by dedicated leadership.” — Ellen Nicholson Dedication Seniors Administration P.3 P.5 P. 41 Guess Who? Be- tween taking the SAT, filling out col- lege applications, and visiting college campuses, they have found time to participate in many high school activities. The Seniors have been models and leaders for younger students in athletics and student government. They have also set the pace academically. They have worked hard to plan and finance their Senior trip. They have sponsored fund raising projects from fresh fruit sales to suppers and bake sales. In addition to their own projects, the Seniors have been unselfish in giving of their time and energy to other school needs. They worked hard cleaning up after the tornado and later helping move furniture from one site to another. Who will ever forget the sight of Britt's cattle Marion Bass trailer loaded with desks? As these students complete their high school career, they will be remembered for their fun-loving, yet cooperative, spirit and for their many achievements. They will be a tough act to follow. Mrs. Beach was a member of the founding faculty of Richard Winn, where she taught English, South Carolina history, and psychology dur- ing her seventeen-year tenure. During this time Mrs. Beach fostered the growth and development of Richard Winn. She was the organizer of the first newpaper, Poor Richard’s Almanac; sponsor of the first Aerie, the yearbook; first librarian; Beta Club sponsor; and Senior Class sponsor for many years. In 1982 the students named Mrs. Beach the “Teacher of the Year1' as a symbol of their respect and love for her, “Dot,” as she was affectionately called by her many friends, was indeed a rare person. She was unselfish in giving of her time and energy to make Richard Winn a school of which we could all be proud. But more than that, she gave of herself. Her loyalty, in- terest, and genuine love for the school and its students were unparalleled. Richard Winn Academy is much better for having come under Mrs. Beach’s influence. The school itself is her memorial, and it is fitting that the library will bear her name. 53 Eagles Move Into New Aerie CLUBS • • • 55 Adding the Extras Student Council The Student Council of Richard W inn is made up of represen- tatives from each homeroom in grades eight through twelve. The officers are chosen from the stu- dent body. All members of the council must maintain an overall C average to qualify for membership. This year’s council has been in- novative in that it sponsored a straw poll to determine students’ presidential choice before the na- tional election. In addition, the council planned and organized Richard Winn’s first Expo to showcase talents of students in academics. Prizes were awarded in science, math, creative writing, and social studies. The Talon, is again headed by Cristin Williams who almost single- handedly organized and produced it last year. She has been assisted by the journalism class and a few other interested students to pro- duce three issues this year. The Aerie traditionally has been produced by the journalism class, but this year other students joined them in selling advertisements several weeks before school began. Because of their interest and help and the hard work of the journalism class, Richard Winn was able to have its annual delivered before the end of school for the first time. Mrs. Murray serves as advisor for the Aerie and The Talon. AERIE STAFF: Front: Cristin Williams, Beth Taylor, Frances Anne Hendrix, Liz Mattox, Abby Cathcart, Ann Teal, Leslie Jones. It is an enjoyable experience that helps develop the stu- dent’s talents and his appreciation for music. The Chorus performed in the “Home for Christmas” program and on a spring tour of Orangeburg and Charleston. Their performances featured the singing of a male quartet and octet. Quartet members are Peter Rambo, Blake Crook, Britt Cathcart, and Lee Dixon. Quartet members are joined by Kerry Colvin, T. Melton, Rob Patrick, and Eb Meyer in forming an octet. The Chorus is under the direction of Mrs. Ellen Nicholson whose singing groups never fail to delight their audiences. Most of the wins were by a wide margin which allowed the coaches to substitute freely. This ex- perience gained by the younger members of the team will be beneficial to next year’s team. The first loss suffered by the team came at the hands of Wilson Hall, a Class AAA power, who was ranked number one in the state at the time of our meeting. The game was a defensive struggle throughout, and they scored late in the game to go ahead 13-6. Our other loss (16-6) to Thornwell was the last game of the regular season. Our team was severely hampered by injuries to two of our key players, Paul Holmes and Todd Robinson. Despite these losses, the Eagles went to the play-offs against Laurence Manning Academy who later won the SCISA Class AA Championship. At the beginning of our season, the 1984 Eagles had set two goals for themselves — to have a winning season and to go to the play-offs. They attained their goals chalking up their sixth straight winning season and entering the play-offs for the fifth straight year. The team was under the direction of Head Coach John Gas- que. He was assisted by Coaches Ernie Hughes, Mike Robin- son, David Porter, and Donald Greer. Trainers for the team were Marion Bass and Britt Cathcart. Eric Cathcart was team manager. vam 71 Stidham Named All-State Robert Stidham was named to t SCISA All-State football team at t close of the 1984 season. Robert, senior, had a spectacular year Richard Winn both offensively a defensively. This team success was the result of hard work that began with conditioning drills even before our new gym was finish- ed. These fourteen girls set their goals high and practiced long and hard to build a strong team. Coach Reid emphasized teamwork and cooperation which paid big dividends. The Lady Eagles were close-knit on and off the court and played unselfishly passing the ball well to get the best shot. The team recorded an unprecedented number of assists. Because the Lady Eagles so dominated their opponents, Coach Reid was able to substitute freely giving all team members plenty of playing time. With nine experienced players returning to next year’s team, next year may be “the year,” too! Coach Beth Reid directs the Lady Eagles. 80 Front: Retta Melton, Pattie Baker, Sharon Smith, Cheryl Stevenson. Kneeling: Abby Cathcart, Melissa Weed. 1st Row, Standing: Betsy Caldw Frances Anne Hendrix, Jena Barnett, Hannah Phillips. Mac Ruff. 2nd Row, Standing: Page Castles, Donna Miller, Rana Weed. Jena Barnett’s Number Retired Jena Barnetts number 25 has been retired from the Varsity Girls’ Basketball Team at Richard Winn. This is in recognition and honor of Jena’s exceptional career at RWA. Jena has scored over 2500 points as a varsity team member and has been a team leader, inspiring the others with her competitive spirit. Jena, whose varsity career began when she was an eighth grader, has received; every award Richard Winn offers in girls’ basketball. She has received “Most Valuable Player,” Free Throw winner and runner-up, the “SAC” coach’s award, and “Most Valuable Player.” She has also gotten numerous conference awards. She has been named All-Conference three times and Conference MVP three times. She was named to the All-Midlands team by The State newspaper. National recognition has also come to Jena. As a ninth grader, Jena was named to the AAU Junior Olympic team and played for the U.S. team in Boston. In addition, she was named All-American by Street and Smith magazine before her senior year. During her last season at Richard Winn, Jena led her team to the top. She averaged 28 points a game and 12 rebounds. This is especially significant because of the many defenses used to shut her down. As Jena closes her career at Richard Winn, she begins a new one at Clemson University. Eagle fans will follow her college basketball career with interest and pride. Hers will be a tough act to follow at RWA, and it is an honor to have had a player of her calibre. Number 25 has paid its dues and deserves to be retired. 81 •S Lady Eagles Dominate Conference 3-AA 82 Lady Eagles Win State Championship The Lady Eagles won the highest award possible in SCISA, Class AA Basketball — the STATE CHAMPIONSHIP! It was a dream-come-true especially for Coach Beth Reid whose own bid for the state championship as a player was denied as she sat out that game twelve years ago with chicken pox. Nothing stopped the Lady Eagles this time as they methodically eliminated Byrnes Academy (53-41) and John C. Calhoun Academy (73-52) to reach the finals. In the championship game against Pee Dee Academy, Jena Barnett proved her All-American rating by scoring 31 points as she led the Lady Eagles to victory. Other scorers were Betsy Caldwell 8, Liz Mattox 6, Abby Cathcart 3, and Frances Anne Hen- drix 2. Conference Awards Given Three Lady Eagles won awards at the close of the con- ference tournament. Besides winning the championship, Jena Barnett, Liz Mattox, and Frances Anne Hendrix were named All-Conference and All-Tournament. Jena was also named co-MVP for the tournament. Coach Beth Reid was named coach of the year for Conference 3-AA. 83 Balance Is Key to Success The Varsity Boys' Basketball Team used a well-balanced offense and a tenacious defense to win the Con- ference 3-AA title and advance in the state play-offs. The Eagles made their presence known early in the season as they quick- ly jumped to a 6-0 record before drop- ping two in a row to Sloan and Calhoun of St. Matthews. However, the Eagles didn’t stay down long as they came back to win eleven more games losing only three. They ended the season as runner-up, but dominated the Conference 3-AA Tournament whipping Sloan and Catawba. As Conference Winners, they advanced to the state play-offs to play PeeDee Academy at home. Conference individual honors were won by four Eagles. These awards were presented at the close of the tourna- ment. Scott Barefield was named MVP, All-Tournament, and All-Conference. Chris Gaddy was also appointed to the All-Conference team. Todd Robinson was named All-Conference, and Robert Stidham was named to the 2nd team All-Conference. The Eagles are coached by Mike Robinson and jerry Wolff. 84 Front Row: Rod Taylor, Steve Reed. 2nd Row: Mack Johnson, Crawford Hughes, Stephen Clyburn. 3rd Row; Rod Wilkes, Rob Patrick, Scott Barefield, Scott Robinson, Robert Stidham. 4th Row: Chris Gaddy and Todd Robinson. 85 Eagles Clinch Number Two in State The Eagles clinched the number two position in the state as they were edged in the championship game by six points (79-73). Defending state champs, Byrnes Academy, held off the Eagles in an ex- citing finish to win the game. The Eagles were paced by Chris Gad- dy with 22 points, Scott Barefield 18, Robert Stidham 14, Rod Wilkes 10, Stephen Clyburn 5, and Todd Robinson 4. Richard Winn had gained the finals by wins over Pee Dee Academy (56-40) and Dorchester Academy (66-49). 87 Junior Varsity Girls Have Successful Season With 8-6 Record 88 JV Girls Are Led by Eighth Graders Kneeling: Ginny Dixon, Rebekah Douglas, Susan Baker, Nancy Greer, Gina Robinson, Millie Mincey. The yearbook records the hardships we suffered as a result of the tornado, the difficulty of being housed in temporary facilities, and the excitement we experienced moving into our new “aerie.” The yearbook also boasts several “firsts.” This is the first annual produced in our new building, and it is our first yearbook to be delivered before the end of school. It was the goal of this yearbook staff, however, to em- phasize continuity rather than change. Certainly our sur- roundings have changed, but our dedication to excellence in all phases of school life has remained constant, and we continue to build our pride.
