RWA FOOTBALL ’82 = 3 Xl J-.=A VT-- A 36 37 38 The Eagles entered the 1981 season with hopes of another playoff appearance and maybe a shot at the Class A State Championship. After three excellent weeks of practice and a good week of camp the Eagles seemed primed for the test. However the first two weeks seemed almost disastrous for the Eagles. After a 20-6 loss to Thornwell and a 9-6 heartbreaker at Catawba, the Eagles finally got untracked. For the next three weeks the Eagles looked unbeatable — wins over Wardlaw, King, and James E. Byrnes followed. Perhaps the most memorable moments during this span of victories was at Byrnes. The Eagles held the Trojans for 4 downs at the 1 yard line and then marched 99 yards for a touchdown. RWA had another tough loss in week 6 — 23-12 at the hands of Thornwell. Catawba traveled to “Eagle Country” for game 7 cocky and confident of a playoff berth. However, the Eagles with “war-paint,” green-gold jerseys, and blood in their eyes com- pletely destroyed the Indians 40-12. RWA wrapped up a playoff berth the following week and by week 10 the Eagles had turned what looked like a very dismal year into another successful season of RWA football. Confident and very proud the Eagles traveled to St. Stephens for the opening round of the State Playoffs. Thomas Boswell and Robert Stidham both were out with injuries but nevertheless at the half TWA led by a score of 7-6. An early third quarter injury to Pat Westbrook destroyed the Eagles passing game which had been ever so potent in the 1st half. The Tigers took advantage of the situation and went on to win not only the game, but also the State Championship. The team of 1981 will probably be remembered best for its goal line stands, the passing combo of D. Melton to Pat Westbrook, the intensity of the defense, the kickoff returns by Jay Frazier — but most of all they will be remembered as one of the proudest and most dedicated groups ever to wear a RWA uniform. Nine Seniors will be graduating from the Eagles of '81 but the memories that they carry with them will be fond ones. Twenty-three wins and two playoff appearances in the past three years is quite an accomplishment. Let us hope all our Seniors in the future can leave on such a good note. 41 Varsity Football Cheerleaders The ten members of the Varsity Football Cheerleading squad cheered the Eagles onto another win- ning season. They helped build up that Friday night spirit by performing a pom pon routine during half-time, making signs, and leading pep rallies. On several occasions, they added extra touches by treating the entire team and the coaches to din- ners on campus. All this was possible through dedication and hard work on each girl’s part. 1. Perry Anne Patrick 43 44 V arsity Boys The Eagles suffered most of their losses due to injuries. Pat Westbrook, Thomas Boswell and John McNeely were out a few weeks with leg injuries. However, the Eagles came back very strongly at the end of the basketball season. The conference record was 8-8, and the overall record was 11-9. Led by a stingy defense (ranked second in the conference) and a potent offense (also ranked second in the conference), the Lady Eagles fashioned a 18-1 Conference III A record. Tne only blemish was an early season loss to Wardlaw, which cost the Lady Eagles an outright Conference Championship and their rank of number eight in the state. The Lady Eagles rebounded from this loss to post an 18 game winning streak. During this winning streak the Lady Eagles claimed a Conference Co- Championship. The Conference III A Tournament Championship, and moved up in the state rank- ings to the seventh position. In the state quarterfinals the Lady Eagles posted a come-from-behind victory over Andrews and advanced to the semi-finals where the Lady Eagles season ended at the hands of eventual State Champion Sea Island. The familiar faces of Wendy and Karen will be missed from the Lady Eagles attack next year. It will take dedication ana hard work from the returning players to replace these quality starters. Dedication and hard work is a must if we are to enjoy the success of the ’81-'82 Lady Eagles next year. This is a first ever in Richard Winn history. Not only did they have a winning season, but they placed seventh in the State Tournament. Playing at Santee, Robert Stidham shot a 78 in the first round and a 75 in the second round to place third in Class A. Because of his outstanding performance he was voted Most Valuable Player. Four of the five players will be returning and there are high hopes for an even better season next year. 60 PLAYERS: Robert Moore, John McNeely, Robert Stidham, Ernie Ferguson, Kirk Weir, COACH: Wayne M. They were escorted by Stewart Goudelock and John McNeely, respectively. Miss Margaret Chappell, our former queen of 1980, crowned both young ladies as they beamed with delight and perhaps shock. From a group of 17, the queen was chosen by the upper school student body and the sweetheart by the football team. This night, as all homecomings, will remain a meaningful event to us all, especially to these two young ladies. 66 68 1. Jay Branham and Dee Dee Johnson 2. Billy Hendrix and Ellen Douglas 3. D. She proudly accepted the crown from Miss Margaret Chappell, our former queen. The entertainment was provided by the boys’ chorus, Mrs. foy Taylor, and the con- testants themselves, all in tune to the theme of “Camelot”. For Lib and her court, this will be a night of lifetime memories. • Wf And The Winners Are .. . April 1, 1982 will be a night to remember, especially for the Seniors. Through the hard work for the Juniors, they were able to enjoy the music, the laughter, the good times, and the friendship shared by all, for one last. The theme of this year's Junior-Senior was “Shining Star” and was truly an appropriate one. The band, Mama's Home Cookin was definitely a crowd-pleaser. The magic of those moments can never be recaptured, yet they will always be remembered. 75 ATHLETIC BANQUET 2 1.
