Under the sponsorship of Mrs. Beach, the 1976-1977 Beta Club enjoyed a successful year. Thirteen new members were inducted, which increased the membership to thirty-two. The club held a book fair, and devised a plan for the beautification of the school campus. Also they provided funds to complete the trophy case which forms the background for the officers’ picture. Some of their presentations included Christmas pageants, a square dance on March 18, and a music program on May 13. They also provided entertainment at the luncheon during the Tour of Homes on March 31. These programs were a tremendous asset to RWA this year as they provided education and enrichment, as well as enjoyment. Music Department Chorus Club The Chorus Club consists of upper school students who enjoy singing; it is directed by Mrs. Nicholson. The club presented several programs during the year. Their first production was done with the drama club. Together they presented a Christmas play, When the Chimes Rang.” Next, the chorus members sang at the Rotary Club in March. During 1977 the yearlong project of the Student Council was raising money for construction of brick columns on either side of the driveway in front of the school. Therefore, many fund-raising projects were conducted. Student Council members sold RWA jerseys, bumperstickers, and tote bags. Also they sold hot chocolate during the cold weather and snow cones during the warm weather. Two dances and a car bash were also included in their projects. Homecoming and Fifties’ Day which are annual Student Council events were successful again this year. Selling snowcones Booster Club The purpose of the Richard Winn Booster Club is to promote, sponsor, and supervise the entire athletic program of the school. The club has had numerous money-raising projects such as turkey shoots and raffles. It has also sold barbeque hash and has helped to sponsor the Back-to- School Supper, the Athletic Banquet, the Parent-Student Basketball Game, and the concessions at the basketball games. The Booster Club was responsible for developing and sodding the new athletic field. In addition, it has bought new varsity and JV cheerleader outfits, put a fence around the kindergarten, placed gravel on the school parking lot, acquired outfits for the football team, put up a backstop for baseball and girls’ softball, and is in the process of purchasing bleachers and lights for the athletic field. 46 During the year several programs were undertaken to raise money for RWA. The Harvest Festival, directed by Mrs. John C. Pope, was held on Dec. 4. As usual, everyone enjoyed this annual fall event. On March 30, the Tour of Homes was held for the first time. It included a tour of homes in Winnsboro, a salad luncheon at Bethel A.R.P. Church, and a bus tour of the historical sites of Winnsboro. Another project was the spice sale directed by Mr. Strickland. Grades 3-12 sold Gourmet spices at school and throughout the community. Prizes were awarded to the students selling the most spices. Each of these projects was a success due to the participation and cooperation of the faculty, parents, and students. The teams playing were the Bad News Beauts, grades 11-12, and the Pooh Bears, grades 8'10. The boys’ game was thrilling with the Eagles topping the Alumni by a score of 62-61. They spent Tuesday night in Montgomery, Alabama and Saturday in Atlanta, Georgia while traveling to and from their destination — New Orleans. The trip was very exciting and featured a busy schedule such as touring historic New Orleans by bus, taking a riverboat cruise, eating at Antoine’s, and wandering through the French Quarter, By night they explored Bourbon Street. All agreed it was a wonderful trip. 1977 Junior-benior On April 28, the Junior Class hosted the annual Junior-Senior in honor of the Class of ’77.
