Fairfield County Courthouse The Fairfield County Courthouse was built in 1822 by William McCreight under the supervision of Robert Mills, a South Carolina architect who was then serving as Superintendent of Public Works. Alterations and additions to the Courthouse were made in 1844. The building was renovated in 1939 with the addition of two rear wings and the flying stairways in front by G. Thomas Harmon, AIA, as supervising architect. 2 X'iT Cenfury House 17-19, 1 865, General P. G. T. Beauregard, with 's cavalry acting as rear guard, made his a he Century House, telegraphing General R. E, Lee of the evacuation of Columbia, twenty miles south, o Winnsboro. Following and destroying the •-oops arrived February 21. The Century House is c crary and boy scout meeting house. • :« 3 Old Brick Church Ebenezer Church, or the Old Brick Church, was built in 1 788. It is often called the birthplace of the Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church in South Carolina. The bricks for the walls were hand made by members of the congregation, who also constructed the church and built the furniture. During the Civil War, Union soldiers used flooring from the church to build a bridge across the river. A Union soldier penciled a note of apology for desecrating the church. The message may still be read in the door frame. Cornwallis House House is one of the oldest and most historic ■ • -rtsboro. By whom it was built or to whom it oeonged cannot be ascertained- However, it is known c buildings that was occupied by the British when established his headquarters in Winnsboro during ♦••'or. This historic and beautiful old house is now : —-r :r - y of S, Roy Robinson. It is a well-kept old arc s v nshed with many fine heirlooms. 5 Fairfield County Museum The Cathcart-Ketchin Museum was donated to Fairfield County as a memorial to John W, Cathcart and Nan Shell Cathcart by their daughters, Ella C. Willburn and Carrie C. Owings. This museum was a main attraction for the Bicentennial tour of Fairfield County. ' tr 6 Town Clock 7 Cathcart House Better known as Wynn Dee, this historic landmark was erected on land granted by King George to Joseph Owen who settled in Fairfield in 1768. It was later acquired by Richard Winn, the man. for whom both Winnsboro and this academy were named. In 1777 Winn presented the house and property to his daughter, wife of Col. William Bratton. Wynn Dee is presently owned and occupied by the Joe K. Cath- cart family, descendants of the Winns and Brattons. 8 NEWSPAPER STAFF FEATURES STAFF: (first row) J. Mattox, S. Traylor, M. Matthews, G. Nine- teen hundred seventy-six is not only our Nation's 200th birthday, but also R.W.A.'s 10th birthday. In grateful appreciation, the Stu- dent Council honored Mrs. Patrick Matthews who has been R.W.A.'s secretary since its beginning. Thank-you, Mrs. Matthews, for a decade of hard work. Johnson s second grade won the fund-rais- ing contest, and Lee Cunningham and Rod Wilkes won the annual Queen and King contest. 17 POWDER- PUFF GAME Through the mud and rain, the Senior and Freshman girls battled the Junior and Sophomore girls in the Eighth Annual Powderpuff Football Game. Although ending in a 0-0 tie, the game provided the excitement of the fall sport at R.W.A. Claude Marthers, who sponsored Becky Porter, was named Powderpuff King for 1976. MUSIC DEPARTMENT The Music Department, again under the expert direction of Mrs. John V. Nicholson, provided much entertainment for R.W.A. A Bicentennial square dance and several other musical programs were sponsored by the Music Department. The Student Council sponsored a “Fifties’ Day this past year to raise money for the new sign. Almost everyone dressed in the fashions of the 1950’s, and the day was a big success. There was a sock hop in the gym and Elvis Presley appeared in person. Mrs. Bolick also served as sponsor for the Student Council since the Council was initiated at the Academy.
