Text from Pages 1 - 120 of the 1975 volume:

Lift your voices join the throng Swell in praise our joyful song. Long live our Academy] Hold its banner ever high; May we ever onward march, Blue and Gold against the sky! Benedicat nos Deus. Benedicat nos Deus. Praise to our Academy! Follow as it leads us on. May its star be ever bright. May its path be ever light! As we come from day to day. Let us learn the upward way. Benedicat nos Deus. Benedicat nos Deus. Gaudeamus igutur luvenes dum sumus! As we leave these ivied halls. As each golden future calls, Richard Winn's ideals uphold; E’er be true to Blue and Gold. Benedicat nos Deus. Benedicat nos Deus. AERIE 1975 Richard Winn Academy Winnsboro, S. C. 1 Volume IX “Let The Good Times Roll” — an old slogan that has lived through many eras. A slogan that reflects our mood, one of fun — in learning, competing, growing, and doing. 2 We “Let The Good Times Roll” in many of our learning experiences. This was possible through the hard work of our teachers, the willingness of our students to learn, and an understanding on the part of both faculty and students that learning doesn't have to be all work and no play. 3 We really “Let The Good Times Roll” in competition at R.W.A. This was brought about by our love of action, our knowledgable coaches, and our fun-loving parents. Our students and parents looked forward to games and gave our teams the support that they so greatly deserve. There was fun for all. 4 As our school grew, there was much work to be done. Our young students had to adjust tp new surroundings, learn new rules, and take on new responsibilities. During this time, our school grew greatly — from two houses that were falling down to a beautiful campus with two large buildings for classes, a gym, and a building for eating. All of this gave us cause to “LET THE GOOD TIMES ROLL.” 5 The year 74-75 was a year of many changes and improvements. We added a music department for our lower school, expanded our physical education department, and increased our faculty and student body to the largest ever. Through all of this we LET THE GOOD TIMES ROLL. 6 7 Let The Good Times Roll 9 ADMINISTRATION And FACULTY 10 11 The school year 1 974-75 has been a memorable one for Richard Winn Academy because of our new headmaster Thomas O. Bruce. Although Mr. Bruce has been with us only a short time, he has shown his concern and dedication to developing Richard Winn to the fullest extent of its potential. Mr. Bruce was graduated from A. C. Flora High School in Colum- bia, S. C. and attended the University of South Carolina where he received an A.B. in history. He is presently working on his master’s degree. Before coming to Richard Winn, our headmaster was employed at James H. Hammond Academy in Columbia for three years. While there, he taught American history and government and coached football and track. He helped to start the first football program at Hammond, Mr. Bruce has made many changes for the betterment of Richard Winn, such as selecting new reading and math materials for the lower school students, providing a place for the upper school stu- dents to eat lunch, and hiring new teachers. 12 Administration HEADMASTER MRS. PATRICK MATTHEWS SECRETARY The Student Body would like to express our deepest gratitude to Mrs. T. P. Mat- thews for all the work she has contributed to our academy. Without her the academy would be unable to function so smoothly from day to day. Her work is also appreci- ated by the athletic department to which she has devoted much time and effort. 13 minim Upper School Faculty MRS. F. H. PURCELL MRS. JOHN T. McNEELY MRS. CHARLES BEACH MRS. ERNEST P. FERGUSON MR. THOMAS O. BRUCE These pictures give only a brief look at our upper school faculty. There is no way to show the hard work that they do while preparing a lesson, or the countless hours that they spend making out references for college. Also, much of their time is spent in worrying about students and talking with parents. They have put much time and energy into making the year 74-75 pro- ductive and on behalf of the student body, the annual staff would like to give them many thanks. 15 MRS. BERRY ARNETTE Newcomers to the Upper School Faculty Miss Judith Bouknight is a graduate of Mid Carolina High School in Prosperity. She received a B.S. degree in Biology from Newberry College and also attended the University of South Carolina, Ander- son College, and Charlotte Memorial Hospital School of Nursing. A registered nurse, she taught operating room nursing at Clemson. Before coming to Richard Winn, she taught at the Fairfield County Vocational School. Miss Bouknight teaches 7th, 8th, and 9th grade science and two classes of Biology. She is also the sponsor for the newspaper and the S.G.W. Club. In her spare time, she enjoys music and art in addition to her work at St. John’s Episcopal Church. Mr. Garrett Allen grew up in Maryland where he graduated from the Robert E. Perry High School of Rockville in 1 971. A sophomore at the University of South Carolina, he is majoring in classical stud- ies. Mr. Allen teaches Latin I and II. He joined our faculty in March to complete the year for Miss Bertha Dunlap who left because of ill- ness. His favorite hobby is archery. m Miss Sophie Young was born in Clinton, South Carolina. She attended Clinton High School where she received her diploma in 1 968. She later attended Presbyterian College, majoring in French and English. She continued her education by doing graduate work at the University of Tennessee. Miss Young teaches English 8, II, III, IV, and Advanced Compos- ition. She also is the sponsor of the Literary Staff of the annual. Her hobbies include guitar and painting. 16 Lower School Faculty MRS. W. H. BOLICK MRS. MARION ROBINSON 17 MRS. F. J. WEED MRS. F. D. ARNETTE 18 MRS. J. D. MCLEOD MRS. DAVID WRIGHT Newcomers to the Lower School Faculty Mrs. John V. Nicholson, Jr. was born in Clinton, S.C. She attended Winnsboro High School where she received her diploma in 1964. 5he later attended Converse College, majoring in Church Music. She continued her education at the University of South Car- olina and the Citadel. Mrs. Nicholson teaches music in the lower school and helps with the music in all activities of R. W. A. Her hobbies are cooking and growing house plants. Mrs. G, F. Bass grew up in Laurens, S.C, where she graduated from Laurens High School in 1969. She later attended Erskine College where she majored in Pre-School and Elementary Education. Mrs. Bass teaches all subjects in the 3-B class at R.W.A. This is only a small way in which we are able to show our gratitude to them. ACTIVITIES 62 63 Music Department Brings Much Fun to RWA This year grades 1-7 attended music class twice a week. Throughout the year, they pre- sented various programs. The first program was presented by the 5th, 6th, 7th grades on November the eleventh to honor United States Veterans All of the classes were involved in presenting various Christmas programs. Then they square danced — to have fun and to raise money to buy music books. “Sing a Song ended the year with all seven grades par- ticipating in a program, with proceeds going to a scholarship fund. The next three pages show each program in order. While putting on these programs, the children learned a lot and had a lot of fun. We would all like to thank Mrs. Nicholson for her hard work. 64 65 66 Beta Club Increases in Number C ST ROW: Mrs. C. Beach, J. Boys, L. Hobbs, D. Reynolds, L. McMeekin, T. Dinkins, R. Lyles, L. Through their efforts, some very badly needed picnic tables were brought to our school grounds. Most importantly, they established a link between the Board of Directors and the student body. This link is already being put to use and will be used even more next year. Our student council should be given much thanks. Club Has a Good Beginning This year, for the first time we had a Christian Club at R.W.A. They called them- selves the S.G.W. (Spread God’s Word) Club, and they had a very large member- ship. Because they started late in the year, they only had time to give one program. This was given during the Easter season and had a great message for all. Miss Judith Bouknight — Sponsor FIRST ROW: J. They put out a paper once each six weeks which had articles on most of the events that happened at school. The paper also had editorials and polls from the student body. In addi- tion there was something from the headmasters desk. Also, in some papers there was a list of students making the honor roll. The paper was both informative and amusing and our staffs should be com- mended. Assistant Editor — Jane Saunders; Editor — Joe Lyles REPORTERS — FIRST ROW; L. Ferguson, V. Miller, SECOND ROW; L. This year the Miss RWA contest, spon- sored by the Aerie staff, was a great suc- cess. Instead of our usual Master of Cere- monies, this year two students, Al McMeekin and Anne Stephenson, con- ducted the program. This gave the stu- dents a bigger part in the program and also gave the program a nice change. Once again the audience had no idea of whom the winner would be, but all were pleased when Edy Turner was crowned Miss RWA of 1975. To Mr. Bruce, our unfeared leader, we leave a Sherlock Holmes detective kit and a can of Lysol for smoke and wine odors. Also we leave the sorrow that you did not join us on the Senior trip. To the faculty, we leave the thought that we have trained the 8th grade to follow in our footsteps. To Mrs. Matthews we leave one big blob of chewing gum on the office carpet.
