Mr. Thompson, instructor of Electronics and Relative Math. Practical Arts builds useful skills. Mrs. Feldman demonstrates why she has a white thumb as she whips up many a delicious dessert in Home Arts class. Mr. Frazier, Practical Arts Department Head. As students walked down the halls near the Shops this year, they entered into pandemonium created by such machines as drills, jigsaw's, and routers in chorus with constant hammering and sawing. If they had continued to walk, they would have heard the rumbling of motors which would have told them that they wTere nearing the Auto Shop. Far away from this clamor w’ere still other noises, but these sounds were created by the mixers, blenders, and egg beaters of the Home Arts rooms. No longer was the odor of sawdust and exhaust present, but rather the mouth watering aromas of cakes, pies, and other delicacies. The Practical Arts department wasn’t entirely one of perpetual hubbub, but one of quiet classroom learning as in the courses of Electronics and Relative Math. Some students were even lucky enough to enjoy the great outdoors as did those in Mrs. Reed’s landscape planning classes. Mrs. Johnson displays some fine material to her Home Arts classes. • 25

Mrs. King, Mrs. Wilson, and Miss Stephan in their natural habitat, the art department. Art and music teachers encourage creativity. Mr. Dahlin on top of the ladder of success. Mr. Benedict warms up the Choir with a well chosen chord. Where but in Greenwich Village or the Art Department could you find artists creating oil paintings, sketches, mobiles, sculptures, water colors, metal ware, collages, mosaics, and needlecraft all at once? Students were encouraged to experiment with as many of these projects as possible, especially those unfamiliar to them. To show off the many fine art works produced in class, an art show was held irf the spring. Student paintings and sketches covered the halls, and the showcases were packed with three-dimensional art. In music classes most of the time was spent singing semi-classical tunes and practicing various vocal exercises. But one day each week was devoted to music theory, and students dissected simple compositions in terms of harmony, musical scales, triads, and other musical elements. The Choir rehearsed constantly for several concerts given during the year. RM’s best voices were frequent stars of assemblies and programs outside school. In both the Art and Music Departments, students were guided by experienced teachers and then set free to express themselves. 21 • FACULTY
