Cancer will eventually be a curable disease. Atomic energy will provide the power to support our civilization, and interplanetary travel will soon become a reality. Science students were given a taste of the technology which some day will enable man to achieve these goals. In Biology classes, sophomores became accustomed to working in a lab as they studied the history, structures and functions of living things. Chemistry classes focused on inanimate objects. “Element”, “compound”, “mole”, and “electron” became everyday terms in the realm of gas laws and solubility products. Because it is based on theories backed up with mathematics, the Physics course demanded a great deal of work from its students. They explored the complexities of time, motion, and light, as well as atomic structure. Mr. Brown confirms the rumor that Physics periods are longer than most. Science classes explore 18 • FACULTY

Mrs. Dexter, Col. Stiness, Mr. Gnatowski, Mrs. Barnes, and Mr. Hopko. Math students learn Col. Stiness explains the fundamentals of a new formula in geometry class. Would you believe A • A equals A? Analysis students were eventually convinced of this and other surprising facts as they delved into abstract mathematical systems. Slightly less abstract, but equally surprising, were the graphs, logarithms, and calculations of trigonometry and advanced algebra. Geometry and Algebra 2. special treats reserved primarily for sophomores and juniors, laid a foundation for fundamental theories and methods which will enable students to go on to higher mathematics, or to put their knowledge to practical use. Every math course has as its major objective the development of logical thought processes and systematic, scientific reasoning. 20 • FACULTY
