Mrs. Stone corrects faulty pronunciation in the French language lab. Earphones and tape recorders identify language labs. Miss Lewis—Latin Teacher. “Villa est villa Romana.” So reads the first line of the Latin I textbook. After endless sets of pronouns, verbs, and adjectives had been committed to memory, Latin students graduated from the study of ancient houses to classic writers like Julius Caesar and Vergil. In the French and Spanish classes, emphasis was placed first on oral fluency, then on reading and writing. Tape recorded dialogues helped beginners grow accustomed to hearing and speaking in a new language, while more advanced students read short stories, poetry, and novels, and then created literary masterpieces of their own. Because we are located so close to the nation’s capitol, many opportunities to utilize their knowledge opened up to the language students. Mrs. Sirkis and Mrs. Barth, Department Head. Mr. Wight and Mrs. Fiege learn something new from Mrs. Stone. FACULTY 17
