English teachers stimulate imagination Miss Derrick, English Department Head, smiles radiantly. A new course was added to the English Department this year. Sophomores in this class, taught by Mrs. Mathis, were given individual attention, and progressed at their own rates. Mrs. Vernosky’s reading course not only cured reading problems, but improved the skill of every reader with her notorious speed reading lab. Seniors also had a special course. Miss Derrick instructed her advanced composition class in literary techniques and styles. Dickens! Chaucer! Miller! Scott! Shakespeare! Hawthorne! They became a part of the everyday vocabulary of English students at RM. Sophomores were introduced to Shakespeare and Steinbeck in a varied literature program, while juniors specialized in American writings. Many parallels were established between English and U.S. History classes as the juniors enjoyed The Scarlet Letter and The Red Badge of Courage. From Shakespeare to Shaw, seniors discovered the potential of their own language. Verbs, prepositions, clauses, and conjunctions haunted students in all grades. But the grammar study was useful to composition work. Maintaining that the only way to succeed in the world is to be able to express ideas clearly, English teachers exhausted mountains of red pencils correcting written assignments. 14 • FACULTY
