Administrators Open Our Portals To make available an education to meet the many requirements of the high school students, our administrative staff both initiates and directs the school program. Principal Joseph Tarallo heads the team to give more than eight hundred students a varied schedule of studies and activities. Problem upon problem, decision upon decision call for many long hours from our staff. Immediate routines—the daily bulletin, late slips—emanate from these offices. Long range problems—next year’s evaluation, the new addition mentioned in the School Board budget —have their inception here. Mrs. Ward and Mr. Smith note Mr. Comly's comments as he takes a message while in the teachers’ lounge. Below, Miss Cockburn checks the enrollment card with J. Doonan. 7

English Skill, Tools for Thought Our school placed emphasis on creative and interpretive writing this year; English wasn’t so dull. We delved into phases of English and American literature. College preparatory students read works by the accepted masters while in other classes the emphasis was on modern writers. Above all, we became more aware that English serves as a useful tool. Miss Smith taught us to compose forceful letters. Mr. Jeffery helped us to interpret meaning in plays like Our Town.
