✓ I I The 1957 Rocket published by the students of Richard Montgomery High School Rockville, Maryland Our School, One Focal Point This is the 1957 ROCKET. It represents the highlights of a year in our lives—the lives of eight hundred fifty students at our school. For this ’57 edition. Art Stevens is editor. Supported by his staff, he has composed this resume of the year of 1956-1957 at our school. Scanning the (Higes of our yearbook, this rainy summer night, we see past events unfold before us. Reliving many past experiences by turning its pages, we remember the first days of school, now long gone, and see the school year rapidly diminishing before us. Once again, as it has in fxist times, the sky brightens with streaks of light in the East. Many of us awaken to the reality of new responsibilities. Although setting out for new goals in life, we will not forget our school through whose doors many decades of students have tread. in Our Town and in Our Lives To get to our school, one might drive north on highway 240 from the nation’s capital, about sixteen miles or so. Entering the outskirts of our town a passerby will note Beall’s Esso on the right. A glance to the left reveals our school. About two blocks from the highway is our school. Richard Montgomery High School is a red-brick building of 1941 vintage, with an addition including a gymnasium just a few years old. In the two story structure, we senior high students have a varied curriculum-college preparatory, business, general, and vocational. Our students come from the town of Rockville and its environs. Chiefly, we are middle class in economy and live as suburbanites of Washington, D.C. As we walk across the R.M.H.S. mat and into the school, we know that this—Our School—is a focal point in our town and in our lives. Waiting for school to start are V. Coleman, I’, Lintlli-eum, l5. Coleman, R. Coleman, and L. Kerr Rocket '57 Reveals Our Program of Education page 6 Our classes and our study are significant in our daily program. Directed by our teachers, supervised by our administrative staff, our classes account for most of our day. Our Graduating Class Page 20 Our seniors, their accomplishments and activities are ever-present in the life of our school. Their officers, their Christmas dance, their strengths and weaknesses, their leadership are memories of ’57. Our Underclassmen page 40 Juniors take an ever-increasing amount of leadership in activities in our school. Sophomores become old-hands as they advance from their novice year. Freshmen become adjusted to our senior high school. 4 Our School Life Our Sports Program page 56 Athletics hold our interest throughout the year. A spectacular run on the gridiron, an action-packed hockey honor event, a three-bagger on the diamond, a Friday basketball game spur us to school spirit. Student Life page 70 Our Student Council strives to give us a wide selection of activities. From dramatics to publications, from a newly-formed science club to patrols, our organizations challenge, entertain, and serve. Our Loyal Advertisers page 88 Business and industry in our town have a marked effect on our school. Notably, they have supported our publications and our athletics. Of interest to all is their sponsorship of the new stadium. 5 «• . Our Program of Education Joseph J. Tarallo, B.S., M. Ed., Principal; Genevieve Blew, A.B., M.A., Supervisor; Levin S. Nicewarner, Secretary. Administrators Open Our Portals To make available an education to meet the many requirements of the high school students, our administrative staff both initiates and directs the school program. Principal Joseph Tarallo heads the team to give more than eight hundred students a varied schedule of studies and activities. Problem upon problem, decision upon decision call for many long hours from our staff. Immediate routines—the daily bulletin, late slips—emanate from these offices. Long range problems—next year’s evaluation, the new addition mentioned in the School Board budget —have their inception here. Mrs. Ward and Mr. Smith note Mr. Comly's comments as he takes a message while in the teachers’ lounge. Below, Miss Cockburn checks the enrollment card with J. Doonan. 7 -9 t Pauline E. Upper Left; Mr. Jeffery directs seniors in the reading of Lady Mac-Ix'th's sleep-walking scene; Lower left; E. Harrison and N. Thomas explain aspects of Roman culture in Miss Gallegos’s class. English Skill, Tools for Thought Our school placed emphasis on creative and interpretive writing this year; English wasn’t so dull. We delved into phases of English and American literature. College preparatory students read works by the accepted masters while in other classes the emphasis was on modern writers. Above all, we became more aware that English serves as a useful tool. Miss Smith taught us to compose forceful letters. Mr. Jeffery helped us to interpret meaning in plays like Our Town. Jerry Gotxlinn, joe Pearson, and Barbara Davis locate a point of interest on the globe. Marry S. Beall, A.B., M.A., World History, Civics; Beatrice Mackenzie, B.A., M.A., U. S. History; Stanley J. McFarland, A.B., M.A.T.. U. S. History, Civics, World History, Student Council; Fern Will, A.B., Senior Problems, Senior Adviser; John Mackin (Not Shown), B.A., Civics, Assistant Football Coach. Our Road to Understanding Social Studies is taught in many parts of our school. The chief purposes seem to be to indicate what good citizenship really is and to make us aware of our heritage. Here on the lower floor Mr. Stanley McFarland teaches our junior students U. S. History with the emphasis on political development. Just upstairs, Miss Will gives the seniors a survey of problems of democratic living. Freshmen study government in Mr. Mackin s second floor class. Math Makes Sense Dwight O. Coblentz, B.S., M.Ed., Algebra, Trigonometry, National Honor Society, Student Activities; Dwight 1’. Hurley, A.B., M.A., Plane Geometry, General Mathematics, Algebra; Barbara Kreiter, B.S., Plane Geometry, General Science, Algebra; Samuel F. Sacco, A.B., General Mathematics, Patrols. Our mathematics department has had a big year. Many of our students are going into the more advanced areas of math. General students and commercials study practical phases of mathematics. Problems in buying and selling, keeping records accurately receive emphasis in their courses. As Mrs. Kreiter’s always decora- Left: The attention of the class is focused on D. Trig, and Solid Geometry students have worried over problems involving cosigns, tangents, and secants in Mr. Coblentz’s room on our main floor. Through application, we bring order to the maze of abstractions. 10 Arthur B. Fauley, A.B., M.A., Chemistry; Estelle Hurley, B.S., Physics, General Science; Grace Smith, B.S.. Biology, Tenth Grade Adviser. Areas of Nature Observed Approaching the end of a long corridor strange odors drift through the air. Looking in room 116, you might see Mr. Berk” Fauley conducting an experiment by burning sulphur. It might be the peculiar odor of formaldehyde from across the hall. Miss Grace Smith brings a frog out of a jar for dissecting. Laws of the fulcrum are explained in Physics under Mrs. Hurley’s guidance. Variations other than class work appear in our annual Science Fair. Right: Dissection begins in a tenth grade Biology class under Miss Smith’s direction. Below right: B. Beall demonstrates balance in Mrs. Hurley’s Physics class. Below: J. Menke fills test tube with a solution as Mr. Fauley watches. Student assistants and Mrs. Keller help ready the library for our convenience Katherine B. Keller, B.S. Librarian Books Lent; Espanol Spoken After a six-week plastering and painting job, our librarian Mrs. Keller and student assistants readied the library for another busy year. Our library added fiction for enjoyment and books for resource material. Our language department offers Latin, Spanish, and French. Though not required of all students, some of us studied languages for college requirements. We who took them enjoyed our elementary accomplishments in speaking and reading. Business Careers Sighted On the first floor of R.M.H.S., we see various aspects of the thorough preparation our school offers for us who are preparing business careers. Through all six periods, seniors can be counted on to handle our deposits and withdrawals under Miss Brown at the bank. They begin their training under Mrs. Robic who teaches us to bring order to journals, ledgers, and balance sheets. Down the hall the rhythmic tapping at the keyboards reveals that speed and accuracy are essentials in typing. There in the office and in Mr. Davisson’s room, students receive practical clerical training. Mrs. Nooney dictates as shorthand students strive to increase their speed. Lillian E. Bookkeeping. Universal Ideas Expressed In the composition of painting, in the melody of song, emotions common to all can be understood. Here is the Art class. We find paint brushes and clay fly fast and thick. There’s Miss Day helping one of the students. Let’s take a look. . . . C’mon, now, here’s the music room. That man in the director’s chair is Mr. Preston. Do, re, mi—Mr. Preston teaches both band and chorus classes now. Takes lots of work. Downstairs now, hear it? The band’s warming up. Nice, isn’t it? Time never weighs heavy on students here. Helen M. Day, B.A.Ed., Art, Display Cases; John B. Preston, B.Mus., M. Mus., Choral Music, Band, Glee Club An ensemble of boys rehearses “Down by the Riverside” in Mr. Preston’s sixth period class. 14 Tenth grade girls sew stockings to lx filled with gifts for the needy in their pre-Christmas classes. Hems and Cupfuls Measured Up stairs we find the Home Art Department. In the right as we enter are sewing machines. The machines are always busy before the spring fashion show. Across from the machines are the kitchens. In September eleventh and twelfth grade girls prepared foreign foods. And then in December, the whiffs of baking cookies reminded us of Christmas. Over there to the right we see the dining room. All meals are served here. The story of child care resulted in the “Rocking Horse Nursery.” Future homemakers train right here in our school. Above: K. Rosser performs a motor tune-up as auto shop boys look on. Right: Mr. Gabbert advises R. Follin as he prepares to assemble his desk. Precision Tested On the around floor near the gym, boys learn practical skills necessary tor household repairs and mechanical trades. We learn to wield a hammer and to use safely the power tools. In the ninth and tenth grades we are introduced to a survey of the total program. For some of us, more specialized training in cabinet making, electronics, and auto repair is taken in the final years of high school. Students study landscape planning and cartography in Mrs. Reed’s classes on the first floor. John S. Gabbert, Bis., Woodworking; Robert S. Holt, B.Ed., VI.Ed., Auto Mechanics; Gene L. Koons, B.S., Industrial Arts; John E. Maley, B.S., Industrial Arts, Electronics, P.A. Club; Richard Schwartz, B.S., Woodworking. R. Carter orders parts from the stockroom. Above: Seniors take to tlu field for a soccer intramural contest. Left: I). Day and N. Fultz try to recapture a rebound. Calisthenics Add Muscle Tone This year our school presented one of the most varied sports programs in its history. Everything from soccer to softball. Girls are complaining about their aches from tumbling, but look at them running down the court for their basketball intramurals. The guys out on the field are just doing their daily 1-2-3-4. Touch football ran the gamut. In the spring softball, archery took the spotlight. Many rush each period to the locker room to dress so that vve get as much time' as possible on the court. 1 iiomas J. Tomorrow this group will continue their study of traffic regulations and automobile engines in their classroom. Note now easily she applies the brake and presses the clutch pedal to the floor. Another area of safety is handled by Miss Donovan in the health room first floor. This year she has supervised dental, vision, and tuberculin surveys of the entire school. Cooking, Cleaning Staffs Serve We make a lot of work around here for the custodians. Mr. Wachter, head custodian, has the hardest of the seven custodians. We see him around here no matter how early we come or how late we stay. He comes to all our activities. Our cafeteria workers are a diligent group of women. Under Mrs. Ray’s guidance, they prepare our meals. Meals for 850 students would challenge even the best cooks and dieticians. With the assistance of student helpers behind the counter and banking students at the cash registers, they meet us ravenous students each noon. Mrs. Reamers, S. King, Mrs. Kendall, Mrs. Ray, and G. the onslaught of hungry students. Hopkins prepare lor Personalities Abound in '57 Looking forward to graduation, reminiscing about days gone by, our seniors conclude their days at Richard Montgomery. From September to final exams they worked toward their one chief goal, a high school diploma. Yes, it stands for something important in life. College board examinations and many other tests seem routine procedure now. Hard work at times, fun most of the time stand for some of the happiest days ever spent. Remember the night of the prom? That climactic night in June when seniors were honored by the Class of 58. Dancing and the small breakfast parties that followed remain clear in our minds. As June approached, caps and gowns were no longer a vision, but now a reality. It was a time of excitement, long rehearsals and innumerable meetings. Students sold book-covers and football pins. At each of the dances, October, January, and May, we sold refreshments to raise funds. Mr. Fauley advised us in our activities. We had high hopes for success of the prom and found our expectations fulfilled. Our classes and credits acquired push us further toward our diploma. Our Town in English, the composition of sugar in Chemistry, a new defense play in basketball challenged us this year. S. Williams, president: X. Crown, sergeant-at-arms; J. Davis, secretary; G. This year 236 sophomores walked the halls ot our school, studied Biology and Second year Latin in our classrooms and sought advice from Richard Montgomery’s Miss Grace Smith. Class officers led fellow sophomores on their quest for funds to aid in sponsoring next year’s junior-senior prom. To shorten their quest the tenth grade sponsored two dances, one in January, and the other in March. The dances proved successful for our sophomore class. They end this year filled with expectation for their junior year. Miss G. Smith, C. Rogge, President; L. Fee, secretary-treasurer; B. Standifer, vice-president. Sophs Promoted School Spirit D. Richard Montgomery wasn’t entirely new to this class. We noted as the year progressed that the faltering three hundred became more sure of themselves. Algebra, Vocational Homemaking, Latin provided a new challenge. In Black Maskers and in the Student Council, these people showed talent, ability, leadership. Our freshmen came in droves to cheer the Rockets on in grid and net contests. All in all the freshman class has been a great asset to Richard Montgomery High School. Officers: R. Holding That Line There was action a-plenty as our team took the field. Through pre-game warmups exercises to the last seconds of hard play, our boys fought with spirit in abundance. Able co-captains Benny Zollman and Tommy Lyman worked to win and to keep up the team spirit. Bee-Bee Eyes,” as Zollman is called by his team mates, opened the holes; and fullback Tommy Lyman swept through them. Other members of the team cannot be forgotten. We will always remember the spectacular catches made by Ken Burgess fired from the hands of John Durbin ... the quick, sure hands of Carl Kauffman and Mike Isreal, our centers ... the bull-like charges of “Skinny” Wilder. We were there to cheer our boys on to victory, to show them we were with them when they were behind. We shouted, whistled, beat drums; we came in the rain to see our Rockets meet Wheaton. T. Lyman (above) and B. Zollman (below). Rocket's co-captains. 59 Preparation JV's Task Coach Farhner led our J.V. squad through a tough season. Many of our sophomores got their first taste of football this year against polished opponents such as Sherwood, Gaithersburg, and BCC. Hour after hour of practice made men out of boys who were candidates for our Junior Varsity football squad. Forty-five minutes of calisthenics, the blocking dummy, live tackling practice, and finally showers and home. It seemed like days to our boys; but in three hours, practice was over. Jay Dawson, Mike Renshawe, Larry Coffin, and Benny Zollman conducted the club meetings as well as playing for R.M.H.S. Mr. Botsford was their adviser. Activities in the line-up for the year were the purchasing of M Club jackets and a dance given in the spring. Up there on the right is the O.A.A., fine athletic girls, every one. Pat Schultz, Nancy Baker, Patty Harr, and Miss Bladen, their adviser, led some hard-working girls through the year to a numeral, a shield, a letter, or maybe a key. Sports days at other schools increased school spirit although our kids couldn’t win all the time. The annual slumber party rounded the year off right and left us with a feeling of success. Many of our court veterans and lettermen returned from last year and gave prospects of a good season. With such as John Russell and Butch Pontius as co-captains our R.M.H.S. team did not lack in spirit and much less ability. True-blue fans of R.M.H.S. definitely have had an excitino vear. Our J.V. players hear these words often during their hours of practice before school. Although much time was spent on perfecting their skills the J.V. felt it was worth it when victory came their way. Even though the season start was slow our kids stood behind the team as they fought for victory. Eventually the boys hit a winning streak and polished off many of our opponents. Standing: G. Ward, J. Maneuvered FairTracks Once again this year our boys cried “fore” and roamed the fairways of area country clubs. The members of our golf team gave us students a good reason to be proud of them. They played a mighty fine season. Our track team was a fine example, too. In all events—the dash, discus throw, shotput, highjump, broad jump—the boys showed up well. Left: T. Sparked by returning lettermen, our team played through one ot its toughest seasons. Success in team spirit and in sportsmanship marked our squad. Hours of practice in fielding, pitching, and batting brought our squad up to tip-top shape. We met again, as in past years, opponents—Gaithersburg, Damascus, Wheaton, and Sherwood. In winning as well as in representing our school in other parts of the county, our Doys worked hard to bring honor to Richard Montgomery. C. Kauffman put tag on K. Thompson as P. Linthicum in a rundown Girls Play way Through Year Basketball intramurals highlighted the season for Richard Montgomery girls. Eight teams coordinated by Nancy Hawse, secretary of girls sports, played in a league tournament. Following the final playoffs honor teams were chosen from among the best players. Our kids certainly proved they’re imaginative, with teams like the Blitzkriegs, and Crowhoppers. Other teams include the Local Kids, the Blackbirds and the Rocketts. Not only do our girls play after school but they really work during classes. Under the direction of the physical education teachers they learn skills which enable them to be better players. Zone defense became an everyday idea to many of our juniors and seniors. Go! Left: D. Lambert and I. Wiseman prepare to jump for ball held by P. Schultz. Below: S. We’ve certainly j roved that practice makes for improvement if not perfection. Almost every girl in our school became acquainted with these sports and others through our physical education program. Their participation in sports through the year has brou ght them closer to a better understanding of teamwork. Rivalry — Key Word Above: B. Howard, M. Valleix watch as P. Moore returns the “birdie”. Following the intra-murals the first and second honor teams were chosen. The teams met and the game ended in a draw. The year continued in its usual course with a sprained wrist here and there, plus a few cuts and bruises. Sportsmanship and fair play became key words as our kids won or lost. Girls who had earned 20 points became members of the G.A.A. and participated in their various activities —ground, sticks, ground sticks—here they go again! Skills Demand Work S. Robertson and N. In addition, they sang at the Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter assemblies. They led a song lest for Homecoming and performed on other occasions. Claris Troy was elected president. Mike Isreal and Jean YVamsIey helped her dispatch her official duties. Some of our lyrical Glee Club members went to sing in the Maryland State Chorus. Then there’s that Maryland one-act play tournament. First there are regional tournaments. Winners from these go to the University of Maryland for the finals on the state level. Our Dramatic Club served as host for the first tournament ever held in this region. Taking care of publicity, finding a dress for the female lead, getting the lights focused—just to mention a few— are things that really help make our plays successes. There are the hours of practice that the cast puts in learning lines, cues, and blocking. So you see, there’s more to dramatics than meets the eye. Saturday it rained—it poured. The game was postponed until Monday. The rain, however, didn’t dampen the spirits of our students. We all turned out for the “Pigskin Ball that night. Our Modern Jazz Quintet supplied the cool sounds for the dance. The five gave out with the frantic beats of modern jazz. Shirley Martin, president of our student council, was crowned Homecoming Queen as part of the dance celebration. About the game... we lost, but we’ve never had a finer weekend. “Cheerleader” P.
