A he oc ket Published by the Students of MONTGOMERY COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL The School for Citizenship” Rockville, Maryland Foreword This year has witnessed a great change in the student government of Rockville High School. Since the Greeks created the first really democratic government and since our new form of government is a democratic republic, it seems particularly fitting that we use the Greek theme to illustrate the Rocket. Moreover, the Greek ideal on an all-round education is followed closely at Rockville High School. Like the Athenians we stress not only intellectual training, but physical, social, and moral education as well. Each of the drawings of Greek sculpture which form the division pages of the Rocket has some special significance— both for the Greeks and for us. They exemplify the old Greek motto which we shall do well to follow— Be moderate in all things.” L. FLETCHER SCHOTT, Principal Mr. Schott, our efficient and highly esteemed principal, has been with us eight years. Through his untiring efforts and fine influence, he has acquired for R. H. S. the good na Je ‘j has today— The School for Citizenship”. Mr. Schott, in his kind, genial way, has skillfully guided our footsteps through school. May he guide the footsteps of many others as he has guided ours. 3 T h e R () C K E T 19 3 3 Faculty Henry S. Whiteford University of Maryland, A.D. Not only is this Junior Republic more beneficial but it is educational as well and provides the students with a greater knowledge of our National Government. The Junior Republic has three branches: Executive, Judicial and Legislative. The Executive branch is headed by the President of the Junior Republic. It also consists of the Vice-President and the Cabinet. The President is commander-in-chief of the Patrol Company and makes all appointments not included in the Constitution. The Cabinet is composed of the following secretaries: Secretary of Citizenship—who sees that the morale of the school is kept high. Secretary of School Property—who sees that all school property is carefully cared for and not abused. Secretary of Athletics—who sees that all athletic plans and preparations are carried out Secretary of Publications—who has charge of rhe school paper and the school year book. Secretary of Scholarship—who finds ways to raise the standards of scholarship of the school. Secretary of Clubs—who tries to devise plans by which the clubs are made more interesting and educational. Secretary of Treasury—who keeps in close contact with school finances. Attorney-General—who pleads the cases for the State for severe offenses. I The Judicial department consists of one Supreme Court and one School Court. The Supreme Court is composed of three teachers and has charge of all cases involving interpretations of the Constitution and appeals allowed by the School Court. The School Court consists of three student judges selected by the President with the approval of the Principal. The laws set up by the government shall be enforced by the Military Patrol Company which acts somewhat as the United States Army does in our National Government. The Legislative department consists of both Houses of Congress: Senate and House of Representatives. The House of Representatives is composed of members chosen every term by the people of the several states, each class being a State, and the electors in each State shall be citizens of the Junior Republic. The Representatives shall be apportioned among the several States, by having one representative for each twenty pupils or fraction thereof. The States are as follows: Roosevelt Senior Class Ritchie Junior Class Baltimore------------------------------------------- Sophomore Class Howard —_______Ninth Grade Montgomery Eighth Grade Calvert ............................. Seventh Grade 32 The ROCKET 1933 The Executive Department of the Junior Republic The President, Vice-President and the eight members of the cabinet form the Executive branch of the government. The eight departments of the Cabinet are: Scholarship, Citizenship, Publications, School Property, Athletics, Treasury, Justice, and Clubs. Florence Rice, Secretary of Scholarship, is in charge of the bettering of grades throughout the school. It is her duty to inspect the reports each term and to give aid to those who arc receiving failing marks. The Secretary of Citizenship, Lloyd Brewer, has general supervision over the Patrol Company and the Courts. He must pass on all promotions, demotions, and appointments to the Company. The inspection of sanitary conditions is also one of his duties. Myrtle Lowry, as Secretary of Publications, has charge of the Rocket, the Sunshine and Shadows, and any other publications which might be gotten out by the school. Mildred Watkins, Secretary of School Property, looks after the library and sees that the lawn and shrubbery are cared for. She also collects books which are left in open places and lost articles and keeps them until they are reclaimed by the owner. Secretary of Athletics, Julian Hoskinson, welcomes visiting teams and keeps an account of all athletic equipment belonging to the school. He also lists those eligible to play on teams. Emma Wootton, Secretary of the Treasury, keeps a record of the finances of the school and promotes interest in the bank. Under her direction the posters in the rooms are changed. Attorney-General John Waters, acts as Attorney and prosecutes in serious cases. Norma Becker, Secretary of Clubs, supervises relations between clubs. She endeavors to stimulate interest in them by forming more clubs of a more varied nature. The heads of these departments have the power to appoint committees to assist them in carrying out their duties. Under Mr. Schott, its faculty adviser, the executive department is attempting to make the new government a success in all these fields. 33 T SOCKET 10 3 3 Courts of the Junior Republic The courts of our new Junior Republic consist of a School Court, composed of three students, and a Supreme Court, composed of three members of the faculty. These courts are not only to punish wrong doers, but provide for the peace and good order of the school. The court was not established purely for punishment purposes, but also as a corrective institution that would keep people from repeating offenses. The Method of Procedure is: An offender is apprehended by a member of the patrol company and served with a warrant to appear in court at a certain time. All witnesses, including the officer, are subpoenaed into court to testify. An indictment is drawn by the Attorney-General and presented to the Clerk of the Court, who keeps a record of all matters in the case. On the day of trial all witnesses and the offender appear and if the offender requests to be represented by someone, he is granted an extension of time to prepare the case. The School Court hears the case, decides upon a verdict, and if he is guilty, sentences him. Some of the requirements of the Key Council are an average of B” on your report and membership on the Citizenship Society for four-fifths of the previous year. The Citizenship Society has been changed and the Key Council is the only society to maintain and perfect the morale of the school. This includes scholarship, health, and social efficiency for each student. The purpose of the Bank is to encourage boys and girls to be thrifty and to put their money into good use. The bank gives 3 per cent interest and declares a dividend on its stocks. This shows the advantage of depositing money in your school bank. The bank’s capital stock is $120.00, 1,200 shares—.10 cents per share, and it has a surplus of $120.00. The bank handles the money belonging to all school activities; and it operates a savings and a checking department. It was established for the use and education of the students and it has proved to be beneficial. However, eight of the regulars will return next year and we expect Rockville High to have an excellent team then. Our schedule was cut to five games by the cancelling of the contest with Bethesda and of these we won one, lost three, and tied one. In a pre-season game with Gaithersburg we were defeated 6-0. In our first league game they were forced to fight hard to eke out a 2-0 victory and we showed marked improvement as the season progressed. The team was composed of the following: Goalies—A. Jones, R. Milor, J. Hoskinson. Fullbacks—E. Paine, W. Candy, P. Anders. Halfbacks—C. Darby, J. Henderson, W. Cleveland. Forwards—P. Bennett, P. Steam, D. Butt, F. Leahy, W. Beane, S. Moulden. Manager—J. Hoskinson. Although they didn’t win all of their games they were a great success in this way—they were a great improvement over last year’s team. On the team were Virginia Darby, Hilma Merry and Marion Lohr, front line; Lorraine Dronenberg, Margaret Walker and Audrey Andes, second line; Loretta Sterling and Dorothy Nicholson, of the back line. We were glad to find so many subs” helping to make the team a success. They were Doris Slater, Ruth Norris, Evelyn Cunningham, Margaret Gartner, Kitty Norris, Ellen Milor, Helen Howard, Gace Baker, Mollie Waters, Anna Hargett, Lavinia Moulden, Elvera McGaha and Marguerite Suddeth. We owe most of our success to Miss Cockburn. Miss Obici lent a helping hand” by drilling the front line, while Miss Cockburn worked with the second and back lines. Miss Cockburn stated that with the looks of the nucleus of next year’s team, we’ll have a successful season. We wish them luck and say, Here’s hoping!” 45 The ROCKET 19 33 Boys’ Basketball Rockville enjoyed one of its most successful basketball seasons in years, winning eleven and losing only six games. Gaithersburg, Sherwood, Poolesville, and Damascus were repeatedly and decisively defeated by us while Georgetown Prep, Bethesda and Takoma-Silver-Spring took the wind out of our sails by big scores. The last game on our schedule was perhaps the most interesting and exciting for it was anybody’s game until the last minute of play when Fall’s Church sank a basket to defeat us 22-20. Coach Vogt picked the following as regulars: Forwards: Hcrsbcrgcr, Starkey; guards: Weller, Steam; center: Darby. The other members of the squad were: Riggs Anders, Leahy, Gooding, Gandy, Nicholson, Ziska, Baker and Brewer. 46 The ROCKET 19 33 Girls’ Basketball The girls’ basketball team this year put forth much effort in trying to win the County Championship. They made a good start by winning almost every game, but they lost in the end. Although they lost this year, it has been said that the team was better this year than it has been for years. The team is known throughout the county for its sportsmanship and fair play. The line-up was as follows: Forwards: Audrey Anders, Helen Howard, Marion Cleveland and Virginia Sudduth; centers: Ruth Norris and Mildred Payne; side centers: Mildred Earpe and Katherine Norris; guards: Helma Merry, Marion Lohr, Lucile Butt and Margaret Ofield. Audrey Anders and Helen Howard, our star forwards, surely did their part in trying to win. Also Marion Lohr, Helma Merry and Lucille Butt did a fine job of guarding. Our centers have done their part in this season, too. The team has shown Rockville High School as a school for sportsmanship. We wish our coach. Miss Cockburn, and her team lots of success in the years to come. 47 The ROCKET 19 33 Junior High Boys’ Basketball Team The Junior High had a very successful season this year—the line-up being as follows: Gene Ochsenreiter—high scoring forward. Guy Merry—fighting forward. Porter Welch—pivot man, center Richard Duvall—Standing guard Jack Ochsenreiter—running guard Substitutes—Stedman Prescott, Francis Sullivan, Russel Ray, Jack Alderson, Harvey Brake, Robert Lee. The Junior High lost their first four games and won the last ten. Mr. Norris seemed ro make something out of nothing. All the players were inexperienced except Gene Ochsenreiter, who scored about 135 points in fourteen games. The team had a smooth running combination, which ran like clockwork. One of our greatest achievements was our beating Georgetown Prep every game we played them. Some very good and lucky shots were made by the team. Dick Duvall made pretty shots from the corner of the court. Guy Merry could sink baskets without looking. Some very good shots were made by Gene Ochsenreiter. A shot was made by Jack Ochsenreiter which could not be made by our varsity stars. We hope we will have a successful season next year, although we are losing several regulars. 48 The ROCKET 19 33 The Junior High Girls’ Basketball Team The coach of our girl’s basketball team was Miss Cockburn. Our first team was as follows: Cecelia Fisher—forward Mildred Hutchinson—forward Lavinia Moulden—side center. Marguerite Sudduth—center. Ellie Ramsdell—guard. Evelyn Coleman—guard. The substitutes were: Edna Anders, Elvera McGaha, Hilda Kraft and Elizabet 1 Boiuse. During this season of basketball we had very bad luck. We had our first game with Bethesda on our own floor, and we won. We played five games the whole seasoin, winning only one game out of the five. Our pass work was very good at the beginning but lagged behind at the end. However, next year we expect to get together a better team and win more games . 49 The ROCKET 1933 Baseball The baseball team this year was favored with the return of three of last year’s infielders, three outfielders, a pitcher, and a catcher. Hershberger, Weller, Gooding, Anders, Brewer, Gandy, Price and Miller of the 1932 squad returned. Several new prospects were unearthed by Coach Vogt and when the first ball is pitched on April 18th we are fairly certain that it will inaugurate a successful season.
