Page moved with mechanics and machinery from the Norfolk Navy Yard to establish the ordance and con- struction depot at Charlotte, North Carolina, which became of inestimable value to the Confederacy. For ncarly two years he remained on the Charlotte Station, interrupting this duty briefly to serve under Commodore Josiah Tattnell in the Confederate gunboat SAVANNAH during the Naval Battle of Port Royal. ln 1864 he was detached and ordered to command the outer de- fenses of Mobile Bay from Fort Nlorgan. This necessi- tated his transfer to the army at the rank of briga- rlnre general on l March 1864. During his most noted battles, against Farragut and Grencral Grange at Fort Morgan, Page was direCI9d T0 ' f surrender to prevent the unnecessary sacrificed 0 9 to human life, to which he replied: I am DVGDGV sacrifice life, and will only surrender when I have ne e. When his last means of defense urrendered to his old ship- means of defens vanislirrd, General Page S matte, Farragut, on 23 August 1354- Aftrzr the Civil War, Page followed the example of his first cousin, General Robert E. Lee, in laboring to hind the nations wounds. His strong Sense of dutdl and simple uprightness of life made him greatly love in his native state.
