Page moved with mechanics and machinery from the Norfolk Navy Yard to establish the ordance and con- struction depot at Charlotte, North Carolina, which became of inestimable value to the Confederacy. For ncarly two years he remained on the Charlotte Station, interrupting this duty briefly to serve under Commodore Josiah Tattnell in the Confederate gunboat SAVANNAH during the Naval Battle of Port Royal. ln 1864 he was detached and ordered to command the outer de- fenses of Mobile Bay from Fort Nlorgan. This necessi- tated his transfer to the army at the rank of briga- rlnre general on l March 1864.
