Page moved with mechanics and machinery from the Norfolk Navy Yard to establish the ordance and con- struction depot at Charlotte, North Carolina, which became of inestimable value to the Confederacy. For ncarly two years he remained on the Charlotte Station, interrupting this duty briefly to serve under Commodore Josiah Tattnell in the Confederate gunboat SAVANNAH during the Naval Battle of Port Royal. ln 1864 he was detached and ordered to command the outer de- fenses of Mobile Bay from Fort Nlorgan. This necessi- tated his transfer to the army at the rank of briga- rlnre general on l March 1864. During his most noted battles, against Farragut and Grencral Grange at Fort Morgan, Page was direCI9d T0 ' f surrender to prevent the unnecessary sacrificed 0 9 to human life, to which he replied: I am DVGDGV sacrifice life, and will only surrender when I have ne e. When his last means of defense urrendered to his old ship- means of defens vanislirrd, General Page S matte, Farragut, on 23 August 1354- Aftrzr the Civil War, Page followed the example of his first cousin, General Robert E. Lee, in laboring to hind the nations wounds. His strong Sense of dutdl and simple uprightness of life made him greatly love in his native state. He became Supeflmenam of Fume Srrhools in Norfolk, filling this position with great ahlilxlalg ltir nearly a decade. DEG5 The insignia of the ship was created with the general form and colors of the PAGE family coat of arms. It was modified to reflect sym- golically the mission assigned and also the illustriousupast of General L. age. The banner held high elevates the name to a place of honor. The hel- met denotes the defensive role of the ship. Yet, the open visor symbol- izes the inherent alertness to the presence of enemy submarine or plane even though unseen by human eye. Below, the smooth bore cannon of the past is depicted relating to Commander Richard L. Page's three tours of duty as Superintendent of Ordnance at Norfolk Navy Yard. lt is vividly contrasted to the PAGE's current offensive might of the symbolic TAR- TAR and ASROC missiles and the mission of offensive operations against submarines. The open book beneath the fesse or broad bar symbolizes the great knowledge required of the men of the new navy and the USS RICHARD L. PAGE. lt further symbolizes the second career of General Page as an educator who served as Superintendent of schools in Norfolk, Virginia. The colors are blue and gold. Traditionally, gold signifies the quality of constancy and blue signifies loyalty of this and future crews. The navy blue symbols reflect the blue of the Seven Seas upon which the USS RICHARD L. PAGE roams.
