it W: ii SNF L SAILPAS TS During STANAVFORLANT 85, sailors from NATO countries had an excellent opportunity to take a look at each other as people, and as friends, not only as allies Friendships grew strong as the deployment sailed through its six-month course. It was disappointing to see friends leave as each ship of the force detached from SN FL enroute to homeport or another assignment, SNFL crew members took each ship's departure from the Force and turned it into a party. The Sailpast tradition was upheld by RICHARD E. BYRD and all the SNFL ships as bluejackets dressed in homespun costumes, waved hand painted signs and banners, and cheered hearty farewells as departing vessels sailed past the remaining Force ships. Sailpast activities included firehose battles, water balloon tossing, shouting matches, and costumed clowning. RICHARD E. BYRD received Sailpast honors enroute to port of call in Halifax, Nova Scotia, where she participated in the 75th anniversary of the Canadian Navy. MMC Marc QNXA Nucl Anciaux contributed the best , poster of the Sailpast activities as his MAY the KSNFLD FORCE EE WITH YOU! banner received the most votes during R.E. BYRD's Sailpast Poster and Costume Contest. Best Costume was awarded to BM3 Willie Thompson who dressed as the ever popular MAIL CALL wearing flippers and an oversized mail bag. Now station the mail buoy watch! SN Mike Mahler as the Statue of Liberty and GMMC Leroy Huber as Kaptain Kaos L were runner-ups in the competition. W Sailpast was a chance for SNFL' sailors to relax after long days of hard work and to make saying goodbye to Q l new friends more enjoyable. sg 1 it 1 A i 2 1 1 l i l l Z4 l I I I.
