Throughout this year at Rich Valley High School, we have had many precious moments to remember, many we could not mention in this book. Having looked forward to this our last year in high school, we were mindful that there would be memories which we would like to preserve. We have pictured a few of our experiences this year which could not be omitted in our book of memories. From September with the beginning of our senior year through May with the complete realiza¬ tion of graduation, we have been guided by the principle of learning to live together in a democratic society. Now that this year is about over, we sadly look back in saying, farewell to our many friends and to our dear Alma Mater. Cortfafs TABLE OF CONTENTS Introduction. Administration. Classes . Activities. The DRAMATICS class was especially busy this year preparing for a number of public ap¬ pearances. American Education Week was the occasion for the first play. We were able to get over our first time jitters and portray our favorite people--the teachers--in a skit called The Little Red Schoolhouse. Preparations were made early for the Christmas pageant entitled Miracle of the Madonna. We worked closely with the band and choral group on this production. We worked hard on one-act plays for district competition. Practice alternated between Hercules ' Night Out, Lily, Submerged, and Strange Road until the results of the school competition were revealed. Some worked on public speaking and prose and poetry reading for the district forensics contest. We will never forget the work on and practice for the grand finale of our dramatics year, the Senior play. 61 SEATED: Bonnie Surber, Donna Olinger, Judy Hackler, Pat Franklin. VARSITY FOOTBALL Under the experienced eyes of Head Coach Kelly Osborne and Assistant Coach Charles Frye the Rich Valley Steers, led by Captains Mike Clear, Richard Spencer, and Joe Mc¬ Ginnis and playing for the first time on their new field, were the victims of a 27-0 defeat by arch-rival Saltville. On their second outing, the Steers were defeated by the John Battle Trojans. The score was again 27-0. Captain Mike Clear played an outstanding defensive game for the Steers. The Steers, in their third game, avenged their first two defeats, by solidly troucing St. Paul. Quarterback Berkley Clear was responsible for three touchdowns. He passed to end Jimmy Turley for one, ran the second himself, and passed to Charles Fullen for the third. In their fourth game, the Steers lost a high scoring affair to Patrick Henry 33-25. Jimmy Turley scored two touch¬ downs for the Steers on passes from B. Clear. Clear threw to Captain Joe McGinnis for another, and Charles Hilt rammed over for the fourth TD. In their fifth game of the season, the Steers ripped Honaker ' s best team ever 21-12. B. Clear spearheaded the Steer attack, passing to end J. Turley for two TDs, while Jerry Doane ran for a third. Joe McGinnis tackled Jones of Honaker in the end zone for two other points. Spirit was runninghigh as Homecoming rolled around. The Steers hosted the Chilhowie Warriors. The guest team returned home with a 40-7 victory ' tucked under their belts. B. Clear passed to J. Turley for the only Steer TD, and Curtis Burkett booted the extra point. Senior Fada Frye was crowned Homecoming Queen by the captains of the football team during halftime festivities. The Steers bounced back with two victories. In the first game after Homecoming, the Steers soundly defeated Poca¬ hontas, 26-14. B. Clear again paced the Steer attack, throwing to Joe McGinnis for two TDs, and to J. Turleyfor two others. In the next game, the Steers raced past District 6 foe Holston, 38-14. B. Clear passed for five TDs, two to Jerry Bise, two to J. Turley, and one to Trenton Doane, Jerry Doane plunged over for the Steer ' s other score. In their next game the Steers traveled to Abingdon for a district game with the Falcons, which handed them a heart - breakingloss, 18-6. Jerry Doane was the Steer ' s lone scorer, plunging over f rom the 6. In the last game of the season, the Steers romped to a 46-0 victory over Independence. Jerry Doane ran for one TD, Jerry Bise returned a punt for another, Joe McGinnis took a pass from B. Clear for another, Clear tossed to J. Turley for two more, and to Donnie Fullen for another. David Anderson picked up a fumble and ran for the Steer ' s last TD. Curtis Burkett booted four extra points for the Steers. The season was a mediocre one--neither good nor bad. The Steers posted a 5-5 worksheet. Two Steers, Berkley Clear and Jimmy Turley, were selected to the All District 6 first team. Jimmy Turley was the top scorer in the district, and Berkley Clear set several district passing records. With experienced boys returning next year, the Steer ' s football future seems to be a bright one. The Rich Valley Peanuts under the watchful eyes of Coach Jim Roberts and Gordon Jones and led by Captains Joe Clear, Brad Carter, and Gary Ratcliff, posted a 3-2-1 rec¬ ord. The Peanuts bested Saltville and Holston (2). They lost to Marion and Saltville, and tied Marion (6-6). Most of the boys will be back next year, some on the varsity. The boys gained experience in their six games, which will help them next year. This looks like the making of a truly great Steer team. GIRLS’ BASKETBALL The RichValley Girls ' basketball team, the Lassies, had one of their finest seasons in many years. Under the direc¬ tion of Coaches John Morgan and Charles Frye, the Lassies compiled a 6-2 record. The Captains were Donna Olinger and Freida Repass. Led by Donna Olinger and Melody Call, the Lassies posted victories over highly regarded Sugar Grove, Marion (2), Saltville (2), and Chilhowie; and lost to Sugar Grove and Chilhowie. Others who saw lots of action were Polly Maloyed, Freida Repass, Donna Friffitts, Ester Olinger, Betty Lamie, and Sandra Clear. The Junior Varsity, paced by Judy Clear and Mildred Allison, also had a fine season. Others who saw plenty of J. V. action were Dianne Henderson, Norma Hanshew, Eleanor Calahan, and Brenda Taylor. Many of the girls played in both Varsity and Junior Varsity games. With most girls returning, next season should be just as successful as this one. BOYS ' BASKETBALL Although lacking in height, but making up for it in ag¬ gressive spirit, Coach Jim Roberts ' Steer basketball team is having their finest season in many years. The Steers have already defeated county rivals Marion (2), Sugar Grove (2), and Chilhowie. Senior center Gary Wyatt paces the Steers, averaging approximately 20 points per game. Other starters include Seniors Robert Mabe, Trenton Doane, and Harvey Gates. Tom Kegley is the other usual starter. Jimmy Turley, Roy Turley, Pat Hancock, and Jerry Gillespie also see lots of action. Coach Jim Roberts also has a bench capable of filling in when the need arises. All Rich Valley students should be proud of the Steers, not only because of their winning and aggressive play, but for their good sportsmanship. Coach Gordon Jones ' Junior Varsity basketball team has also had and is stiH having a fine season. The JVs are paced by Ronnie Hubble and Clarence Olinger. They are gaining experience which wiH aid them when they step up to Varsity play in later years. In them, Rich Valley has the makings of another fine team. BASEBALL Although plagued by errors and bad weather, Coach Gordon Jones ' Rich VaUey Steers baseball team won only three games, but played in the true Steer tradition. They were just as graceful in victory as they were in defeat. Senior Richard Roberts, who pitched a one-hitter against Abingdon, wiH be returning along with several more of last year ' s regulars. With these returning players, the Steers, barring some of last year ' s problems, should have a successful season this year. TRACK The 1965 Steers track team had a very successful season. They were Smyth County Champions, and took second place in the District 6 meet. The season was highlighted by several victories of arch-rival Saltville, and one victory over district champions Abingdon. The Steers had two boys who participated in the State Track meet. Another boy could have participated in the State meet, but he decided not to go. The Steers also took part in Concord Relays at Athens, West Virginia. With virtually the same team as last year ' s, the 1966 season should be a successful one. n o ETOs To J h jj. ' iJjj.sirrrr i f TK . M UJ Coc Uit 4.
