Text from Pages 1 - 106 of the 1964 volume:

OUR SENIOR CLASS PROUDLY PRESENTS . . . THE VOLUME XVIII PUBLISHED BY THE SENIORS OF RICH VALLEY HIGH SCHOOL SALTVILLE, VIRGINIA ROUTE NO. 3 ' III! in ii m 91 Our Days . . . In the valley Far away in a beautiful valley, Where the river rushes by, And the mountain peaks so lofty Are close against the sky, Stands our cherished Alma Mater The dear ole ' Rich Valley High. The desire for knowledge increases ever with the ac- quisition of it at our school. High school days form the greatest pattern for the future, so in the valley we have come seeking many things. Amid our beautiful surround- ings we have learned to build and to search for a greater tomorrow. Our Senior Class has been inspired by accom- plishments in every year of the past. We entered this year with smiles and eagerness and purpose; big dreams and plans and most of it sincere. Our days in the valley have been numbered--the five years have passed quickly and there have been many happy fulfillments- -our class work, our associations with the teachers, our participa- tion in activities, and our challenge for graduation. Teresa Marion, LASSO editor, works on plans for the 1964 yearbook. This book, the Lasso of 1964, is a story book of our days here. It will tell of our lives as seniors in this val- ley- -the one we love and cherish. Here we students have found something to remember, but more than that we have found something to live by. Here, the constant challenge, the desire to excel, a stimulus for learning is found. Here, the search for the challenge is found in our valley. As we leave this school we hope to be leaders and to give ourselves to our country. May you keep our book to look back in years to come to recall our class . . . and the good we have done. My job is always tough but this case was the hardest one I ' ve ever had to tackle. You see, when my former classmate, Ralph Allison, now one of the world ' s wealthiest men, demanded to know what the members of his 1964 graduating class of Rich Valley were doing, my job then was to look up each one. I had a feeling that this task would be almost frightening. The first move on this case took me to Smyth County where I hoped to find some trace of the ' 64 class. My hunch was correct. I found Linda Osborne in the process of writing a book entitled HOW TO GIGGLE WITHOUT REALLY TRYING. David Coulthard had just been named Public Lover No. I. He marks his women on the neck so he can tell them apart. Kenneth Anderson was constantly busy as Chief of Police on the Ridge. You ' ve heard of hootenanny? Allen Umbarger has really got the hootenanny swinging. Of course he couldn ' t be quite so successful without his sing a long gang, the 1964 Junior Class. Sara Buchanan and Hilda Hubble are housewives and live on ranches up at Ceres. Neil Turley and Pat Surber are married. They reside in a little cottage on the moon. Marshall Edmonds had started a business of his own; Edmonds Chicken Factory. (I always knew he would end up like that.) After much thought and consideration, Walter Evans decided he couldn ' t possibly con- centrate on college work, so he got married. (I can still see Walter typing love letters in typing class.) At the Rich Valley School itself I found that two of the boys were on the staff as faculty mem- bers. After playing football for the Greenbay Packers, Ernie Catron and Jackie Bise have re- turned to R. V. to coach the football team to its sole winning year over a period of time. (They take special care to help their boys pass U. S. Army physical tests.) Charles Taylor is taking night courses in algebra so he can get the diploma he should have had ten years ago. All graduating classes have some members to go into the field of entertainment, so to Hollywood I went. What a lucky move! Bobby Booth had broken Elvis Presley ' s record by selling millions of recordings of Tannersville Here I Come. Bobby had to divide his fortune with Janice Carter. After all, she composed the song. Janice has shaved her head and is continuously mis- taken for Yul Brenner. William Lamie, Bobby Hess, and Jimmy Holmes had teamed up” and completely replaced the Three Stooges. Sarah Hayton is still having the time of her life! She tells jokes on the Jack Paar Show. Liz Taylor has a new hair stylist, Ann Neal. Wilbur Holmes has a job teaching the movie stars the correct way to walk. Carolyn Lamie plays the role of a laughing hyenia in her next movie. Sidney Somerville let his hair grow out and tried to get a job with The Beatles but they sent him to Walt Disney to try out for the part of the Shaggy Dog. Jo Ann Atwell is private--very private- -secretary to Dr. Ki ldare. I wasn ' t surprised to find Gene Chapman and Sylvia Breedlove just finishing a big five hour movie in which they starred. Africa! It seemed that in the past ten years some of the class had really decided on this country as their ideal habitat. Jimmy McGhee and Curtis McAllister had joined partnerships and wereco-owners ofthe Youkill ' em, We chill ' em funeral home. Missionary Loretta Robinson informed me that she had almost converted Jimmy and Curtis. Also in Africa was Teresa Marion Coulthard, teaching Spanish to the Africans. 78 It seems that this class of ' 64 really has made a name for itself. In Paris I found that Kathleen Turley is really bringing in the money with her dress designing. Patricia Harden, her model, has done much to make these designs well-known. Woodson Umbarger is the owner of a beauty salon in Paris where he gives manicures, facials, and creates very unusual hair styles. Of course he had a lot of practice on animals up at his Ceres farm. Boarding a plane to head back to the states, I found Brenda Griffitts acting as hostess on the plane taking me there. Brenda said that Judy Brickey is also an airline hostess for TWA. Charles McAllister is one of the biggest stockholders in this company. I arrived in Daytona just in time to witness the most exciting race of the year. Mac Buchanan had broken Fireball Roberts ' racing record! There was only one change. Mac ' s mechanic, Curtis Brickey, insisted that he drive a Chevrolet. Leota Frye and Peggy Clark are nurses at Uka Mooka hospital in Cut Me Out City. They specialized in spinsters who have no one to care for them. I could find no more of the class, so I decided to go up to Washington and ask the FBI to aid me in what seemed to be a never-ending task. Who should be head of the FBI but my former classmate, Johnny Collins! It seems J. Edgar retired. Bobby Hanshew ' s record showed that he was editor of the NEW YORK TIMES. Lynda Necessary and Crystal Call are marriage counselors in Reno, and from all stand points are doing quite well. Wilbert Holmes is an old cow-hand down in Texas. His legs were so long, they couldn ' t find a horse to fit him so he rides this odd looking animal with thousands of spots and a 1-o-n-g neck. I believe they call ’em giraffes. David Frye is teaching agriculture in Alaska, and Harold Holmes is a tobacco auctioneer in North Carolina. David Spencer and Ronald Stevenson had been suspended to a 9 p.m. curfew at college. Reason? They chased the girls after dark. Ronald Creggar is married and lives on a banana plantation in South America. Gerald Hall is a taxi-cab driver in Miami. I don ' t know how I could have missed Jack Young while I was in Africa. Being a big game hunter, Jack must have been on an excursion. Joe Kegley has just invented a new wrap around skirt . . . without strings. Andrew Hoover is married to Carolyn Kennedy and is Attorney General. He has a private secretary . . . Dottie Horne. Carol Prater had started a dancing school on the moon teaching the martians the bird. Thanking Mr. Collins for his help, I left Washington thinking I had completed my job when there appeared an old man holding out a cup to me. I recognized this man immediately . . . Tommy Gillespie. The army didn ' t get him after all. He informed me that another ' 64 graduate, Paul Pruit was also walking the streets carrying a little cup. Both of these boys were big finan- cial successes. With tired feet and a feeling of accomplishment I close this case with hopes that I never have to undertake such a task again.
