Win I imnt have been do iiif; as I roared across the vast plains of Kansas on ni va to attetid a class re¬ union of tile Rich ’alle graduates—C ' lass of 1949! The headlines loomed before my vision— State Sena¬ tor Sam M ers Wins Landslide. My! WMiat a period of ten t ears conid do for a person. The article reail that Sam had jnst defeatetl his dear classmate. Alien Wartl, in a close race. Jeanette Snrber had alreadt been se¬ lected as his private secretary. I read farther that Robert Anderson was manager of the r-Slip-f ' p Banana Plantation and seemed to be in his seventh heaven. A vert striking; ad canjJtht mt attention of the Dress Shop managed by Madeline Harris, tvho designs and models her otvn creations. There ' s also Jolene Parks tvho assists in the aiivertising department. Till ' World Sr’u. ' s reporter ' s name tvas most familiar— that of liaxter Snrber who is stationed in London. The social page carrieil a big review of the marriage of Clarence Frte to a nationallt known debutante. (My! We didn ' t know things back at ole R. iliil we?) I ' he sports editor, j. liuchanan, tvas throtving all the roses he coidd get to Ridren (iillespie, head coach at Notre Dame, and to his assistant, Bobbt N ' ecessart, who has changed practicallt all the old rides. Feme Burnop ' s name tvas mentioned as lieing elected head of a girls ' school in Montana. 1 closed mt eyes and slept until I landed at Fri-Citt Air I’ort. When I embarked, I recognized the neat, at¬ tractive stetvardess, Wanda Bottling, and tlie pilot, Fhomas Mash, How little did I dream of their guiding me through the clouds to bring me home again. File reunion tvas most successful—such as reunions go. File same inevitable i|uestion tvas being asked over and over, Where ' s so and so? What ' s she doing? C. P. Bricket had just won the Kentucky Derby so he was passing out dollar bills as souvenirs. And there tvas Ciladys Frye tvho tvorks as head nurse at Walter Reed Hospital assisted by Mart Ruth Louthen and Carra Call. Ruth Robbins arrived in a maroon conver¬ tible Buick which she had won from the lieauty soap contest. 1 found Jack Campbell, Merle Osborne, Her¬ bert McAllister and Cecil Carter conferring on their present agricultural problems in raising cigarettes ready for market. Netvs came that (Jordon Hagy could¬ n ' t attend because he was head man at the Ringling Bros. Circus, but generous ole Fotst sent each of us free tickets for a performance, Naomi Catron and Doris Olinger were married and teaching in a nursert school in Salt Lake Citt, Dewet Frte seemed iiuite prosperous having established himself in business—Frye Baby Sit¬ ters, Inc. Remember Charles X’ermillion? He is work¬ ing with the I ' .B.I. in Nett Ork. Nellie .MetJuire and Doris Maloyed are each tvorking as pritate secretaries in Washington. Philander (irifhtts has gone to Movieland. He is head proilucer of the Follies of ' 59. Oh! he is the new dancing sensation tvho kept all his dancing talents so ttell hidden in high school ilats. What is Donald McCready doing? He lives in the far northern tvoods with his tvife. He has just been in but he couldn ' t let cidd tvealher catch him here, so he left. 1 tvas so glad to see that Bobbt Rogers tvas head cheerleader for the Dodgers and now she can tell to her heart ' s delight. Bobby I’enland, also with the Doilgers, has been promoted from bat boy to otbeial home-plate d lister. Betty ' Faylor is vert happy in a little rose-covered cottage in Fazetvell County. Harold (Iillespie, that good-natured Senior of ' 49, is nott Life on the pro¬ gram, Lite Can Be Beautiful. ' Melba Frte left for- Holittvood the week before for a screen test in her nett picture, “Now Is the Minute. Peggv DeBusk, notv national director of (lirl Scouts, had gone to Stt itzerland to a conference and couldn ' t be present, and Bernelle Surlier tvas also on her tvat to Brazil as secretart to the Ambassador. I’lie netvs tvas heralded id June Neal ' s success in the musical world. She had just given a ren¬ dition at the W ' hite House and was receiveil most gra¬ ciously. Peggy Smith served as mt secretart during the reunion, having come from Baltimore to the meeting. F.veryone tvas talking about the interior decorating being done by Jean Henderson of I,oril and Fat lor, Nett ork. Some of mt classmates had married. James Kestner, for instance, tvho said, It is a tvonderful institution. Charlotte Burgess spoke of her business in selling in¬ surance. Bernice Bevers, an Armt nurse, is stationed in (lermant so she could not attend, .Also, W ' illis Moore, a head dentist in Japan, sent his regrets. Haskell Mc- .Mlister furnished free cokes for the occasion from his local drugstore on the corner. John .Xnderson, a big tvheel in the industrial tvorld, tvas wearing a botv tie and proudly carrying his cane. His private secretart, Dorothv Spence, looked as prosperous as he. Such was the personage of the Class of ' 49. Hotv 1 tvish I could go on and tell more, but my youngest son, tt ho has to be bathed and ted, and tvas ci t ing lustil t and atvakened me from mt stveet dreams. .Xnytvat 1 wish that each action, if pleasant, mat come to life with true characterization of health, success and happiness. •Of lf } PA I sv Pk.
