The varsity tennis squad completed their 1969 season by capturing one-third of the SWS Conference crown, sharing it with Homewood-Flossmoor and Oak Lawn. In IHSA District competition, the team finished a respectable fifth. The varsity squad had a perfect SWS conference dual meet record. Two impressive wins of the season came against Oak Lawn and Argo while rival H-F fell to the Rockets, 3-2, for the biggest win of the season. This season the squad was under the direction of the young and personable Coach Fisher with the sophomores rl 3-g under the guidance of Coach Febey. Placing much emphasis upon conditioning, the netters built two squads with a great cleal of depth. Seniors George Hattendorf and Marty Hill made up the first doubles team, while Rich Ader and Bob Welsh provided the winning combination at second doubles. Mike Lewis, who was voted most valuable player,,held the number one singles position. The tough, scrappy play of Gary Earlywine made him a consistent winner at second singles. Third singles was filled by either John Reindt or Glen Stark. TOP PICTURE- VARSITY- BOTTOM ROW: G- HGff0I1d0ff1 J- 5lOUf, R- ABOVE. FROSH-SOPH. BOTTOM ROW: J. Marks, A. Atz, G. One cannot point his finger at the cause for this letdown, but this type of occurance is not uncommon in athletics when a team plays an abbreviated schedule. The team initiated its season by winning three out-of four nonconference games, but they could not find the same success in the tough SWS Conference. ln con- ference play the team compiled a 41f2'91f2 record. ln IHSA District action, the team opened with a 1-0 victory over Marian, but they were shutout by Bloom 'l0-0. ln an earlier encounter the Rockets had beaten Bloom 5-3. Throughout the season, the Rockets were paced by the fine pitching of Bob Martin. The fine mound staff also in- cluded Dan DeCaprio, Tom Sullivan, and John Roberts. Other leading performances came from shortstop Bob Hoglund, second baseman Scott Peterson, first baseman Larry McCarren, and outfielder George Scanlan. Most valuable honors were awarded to Scott Peterson. VARSITY TEAM BOTTOM ROWS D- DGCGPIJO, D- Scliba, M. Barry, J. T. Sullivan, L. McCarren, G. Scanlan, J. Roberts, B.
