. 2 'ERC , .,,,,-r' the great debate The Rich East debate team began the '68-'69 season with almost entirely new blood. The foundation for a winning season rested on two seniors and two iuniors returning from last year's victorious debate squad. The first team consisting of iuniors Paul Leibson and Marty Mulhall and seniors Leslie Gapp and Barry Scherr faced the awesome task of upholding last year's superior record. This year's squad, coached by Mr. Radcliffe, Mr. Tan- tillo, and Miss Farrell, captured firsts, seconds, and thirds in almost all of the 32 tournaments in which it was en- tered. It displayed its best rounds of debate at the two major tournaments of the year excluding State. The squad became the second in Illinois' history to place two two- somes in the championship rounds of the National Forensic League. The relative inexperience and youth of Rich's squad were probably the only factors preventing the team from sweeping firsts in this year's state-wide tournaments. When considering the seasoned and experienced compe- tition the team faced, Rich East can be proud of their efforts even though they did not bring home as much brass as in the past. 97
