Under the same rays of sunlight, students at Rich East are growing and developing because ofthe activities within. In the warmth of friendship, the light of knowledge, and the energy of experiences, the time spent here results in the growth of its students. PARTICIPATION . . . . . . It is inhabited by hobbits, one of whom, Bilbo Baggins by name, had an adventure. The class of 1969 created a prom called 'The Hobbitn. In the im- ages of Middle Earth, haunted by the spirit of Bilbo Baggins, couples danced through its eaves and treas- ure rooms. The experts said the team failed to get the Whig play when they needed it. The opening 24-7 loss to Bloom marked the end of Rich's domination of that seven year rivalry and the end of a twenty game winning streak. That game was an indication of things to come. At Homecoming the team suffered a 25-7 loss to the eventual conference champs, Carl Sandburg. Three wins in four starts were to follow. Oak Lawn fell 27-7, and Lincolnway was trounced by a 37-7 score. The loss to HF was made more bitter by the close 7-6 score. Evergreen Park was crushed 31-0, but the season was to end with losses to Beavis, 13-7 and Bremen, 12-0. Pat Croker, who lead the area in scoring and in passing accuracy, was selected Most Valuable Player. All-conference honors went to Tom King at offensive tackle and Klema at defensive end. The junior Varsity provided some encouragement for the future by compiling a 6-0-1 record. Mr. George Egofske, head coach 76 vii --1-,.1..,, , V, --....... v Q gf --aj. 1 S-x. .... ,K . The harriers have remained unbeaten in dual meets for two years and have compiled 24 consecutive victories. Although the team was weakened by sickness, they emerged second in the SWS Conference meet. The team failed to defend their District title, placing second, even though they qualified the entire team for state. The harriers were paced by a trio of veterans. Seniors Bob Paxson and Pat Dineen, both three year lettermen, and junior jeff Wray led the team with consistently strong performances. Four runners who competed downstate will return to offer bright pros- pects for next year. Sophomores Tim Conley and Mike Klema and juniors George Hattendorf and Ron Paxson should form a strong nucleus for Hafner's harriers. 80 manager, P. johnson. Wrestling 1967 The 1967-68 Rich East Wrestlers finished sixth place in the South West Suburban Conference, although they compiled a respectable 12-7 dual meet record. Coach Ken Nordquist's grapplers , showed their strength in toumament competition by capturing the Willowbrook Quad, placing fourth in the Rocket Holiday Tournament, winning their own IHSA District tournament, and finishing fourth in the Carl Sandburg Sectional. On the way to the District championship, the Rockets advanced their entire twelve man team past the first round and finished the tournament with five individual champions. District champs Max Branum, john Kletnick, Steve Hahn, Terry Fremer and Tom King all qualified for the Sectional meet, along with District runners-up Bruce Wilson, Tom Reynolds, and Frank Prohaska. Max Branum was the obvious choice as the team's Most Valuable Wrestler. While compiling a 31-1 record, Max set the school record of 22 pins in one season. His honors included the Willowbrook Quad and Rocket Tournament titles and the Conference, District and Sectional championships, all in the 127 pound class. Max placed second in the State Tourna- ment at Northwestern University. In addition to Max's selection to the first all-SWS team, Mike Mooney at 133 pounds and Iohn Kletnick at 165 pounds were named to the second all-SWS team. 82 , 5- ae 1 H 1 'i ,if .E .1 we 1- --s. 1.-1 qv ny Q-.V , - l I on li VFQKBSITY TEAM. It was not Rich East's year for basketball. Coach Shenn Hafner tried various starting lineups in an attempt to find a winning combination. lt rarely came and never stayed long. The team had to play a scrappy, hustling brand of ball to overcome its great lack of height. Senior Pat Croker, 5, 10,1 was consistently a top performer who earned the Most Valuable Player award and a berth on the second all-conference team. The five wins were scattered. Richards and Rantoul fell in tournament play, While Lincolnway, Reavis and Evergreen Park provided the only conference victories. TOP ROW: Coach Ruggles, R. Johnson, A. Barris, R. Hetzler, D. Golf 1968 An 8-5 dual meet record and little success in tourna- ments marks the play of Rich East golfers this year. The Rocket Duffers swung to a fourth place finish in the Conference meet at Silver Lake, and a fourth in the Grant Park Tournament. However, with several underclassmen turning in fine performances through- out the year, things look very bright for the future. Sophomore Ed Blechschmidt was voted Most Valu- able Player by his teammates. Returning next year will be junior Kurt Johnston and Kevin O'Su1livan, a freshman, who saw regular action on Coach Ken Nordquist's squad this year. Looking back, we can see how far we have come, looking forward, We can see how far we have to go. Each of you will have had a different view as you have crossed the bridge. Surveying the land- scape we are leaving behind, we see many accomplishments by students, as well as enjoyable social activities. We see students who have matured, gained confidence, and become highly skilled. As we look forward from the bridge, there are many decisions that you as students must make, not only what field of endeavor to pursue but the method that you will use in your pursuit. I am confident that each of you will always use the high principles that you have exibited during your high school career. The view from the bridge has been thrilling, the road beyond will be as you desire. I join with the entire faculty in wishing you the best of suc- cess in the future and we will follow your future with both pride and interest. Donald H. Trimble 136 SCHOOL BOARD. We believe that the results have accomplished this goal. However, we owe a great deal of our success to the efforts of others. We would like to express our appreciation to Mr. and Mrs. Mal Kennedy of Paragon Publishing Com- 200 pany for their advice and assistance. We thank Wal- inger Photography Studios for their dependable serv- ice and high quality Work. We also thank the ad- ministration, faculty, and students of Rich East for their cooperation. Finally, We thank Mr. Rinkenberger for the many hours which he devoted to the production of this book. Editor-in-Chief xr? MM by 9 igffgjgk W fu? up 53,5 fb Q2 U55 W A fi' X A fl X
