Bobby Harrington Ann Bolton r,..e.e,oe, Reporter Secretary Vice-President President Treasurer szmmzs l I Fiv- W I Glass flislary When in September, twelve years ago, one eager group entered primary school for the first time, little did they think that twelve years later they would be entering that same school, but entering the twelfth grade, and for the last time. The beginning was a long time ago, but it seems as only yesterday that this class was beginning the fundamentals of reading, riting, and 'rithmetic. This great adventure and experience began under Miss Putnam. The first grade was a wonderful part of our life, because it was our first meeting. Little did We realize that these little strangers around us would become our fast friends, and stay around for the next eleven years. But soon the year was over, and most of us were promoted to the second grade. When we entered the second grade we were thirty strong. Miss Dorothine Massey was our teacher and we loved her very dearly. In this grade we left coloring and began learning reading and printing. The most remembered event this year was the daily reading circles. In these circles we became expert readers. When we entered the third grade our class was enlarged by the students from Lasker. These included Virginia Bobbitt, Nancy Collier, Selma Parker, Leo Barnes, Elton Smith, and Donnie Wade. After losing two in the second, our number was now thirty-four. Our studies in the third grade were based chiefly on nature. Mrs. Olive Askew was our teacher. With our entrance into the fourth grade our number was boosted to thirty-nine which was the largest number ever to be in our class. Mrs. Lucy Parker guided us and soon we were in the fifth grade. The fifth, sixth, seventh, and eighth grades passed fast with our number slowly decreasing, our knowledge increasing, and our world broadening. Our teachers those years were Miss Helen Massey, Miss White, Mrs. Hornok, and Miss Taylor, respectively. And then we were ready for high school, or at least entering it, whether we were ready or not. Our Freshman year was a new, exciting part of our history. We elected Linwood Lane as president, but Bobby Harrington, our vice- president, took over when Linwood moved to Woodland. Virginia Bobbitt was our secretary. Our home-room teacher was Miss Ruby Langford. At mid-year we gained a new student when Bobby Matthews transferred from Oak City. He soon made many friends, both boys and girls. It was during this freshman year that we enlisted our abilities into the sports of the school. After a prosperous year we became Sophomores. As Sophomores we found high school a little more to our liking, for now we had someone to look down on. Miss Lenelle Fuller was our homeroom teacher. She was liked very much and under her we made a few accomplishments. During this year our officers were as follows: Charles Bolton, president, Bobby Harrington, vice-president, Margaret Brown, secretary, and Peggy Joyner, treasurer. Our Junior year was a broader cycle in our world of experiences. Much scholastic work was accomplished and we were beginning to answer for ourselves what made the world go 'round. Our extra curricula activities were devoted mainly to the idea of making money. Every conceivable means to be thought of was used and after a while our treasury fattened. Miss Ann House was our teacher until Christmas, and then Mrs. Malcolm Browne took over. Under Mrs. Brown we made a tremendous success of our Junior-Senior Banquet. Many said that it was the finest ever to be given in this school. Our officers this year were: president, Bobby Har- rington, vice-president, Charles Bolton, and secretary-treasurer, Peggy Joyner. When we were promoted to the Senior Class we hoped that our money-making worries were over, but soon we learned that they had only begun. But under the competent guidance of Miss Neece, we found these worries disappearing. We had a magazine sale, stock-yards sales, and a fine Thanksgiving dinner, and our treasury quickly enlarged. Our number was now seventeen. Bobby Harrington was elected president, Joe Keen, vice-president, Virginia Bobbitt, secretary, and Ann Bolton, treasurer. As of this day it is too early to talk of our accomplishments. We have formed this annual, planned our Senior trip and Senior play in the spring, and are all hoping to walk down that aisle on May 24. We shall never forget this school or its teachers who tried so hard to fit us for this world we live in. Also, we shall never forget all of the friends we.have found during our years in this school. All of these have meant more to us than we can tell. With these thoughts I close the history of this '54 Rich Square Senior Class. We declare our mental state sound, and our physical health goodg and we are therefore capable of lawfully disposing of these earthly possessions. ARTICLE I To the Rich Square High School we leave our love, our devotion, our loyalty and our deepest appreciation for the things she has given us. ARTICLE II To our faculty and principal we leave our undying gratitude for the things they have done for us, and we leave our apologies for our shortcomings. ARTICLE III To Miss Neece we leave our sincere appreciation for guiding us safely through a successful Senior year. ARTICLE IV To the Juniors we leave our Senior privileges and our title Digni- fied Seniors. ARTICLE V To the oncoming students we leave these individual bequests: Margaret Clark Brown leaves her ability to sell ice cream for two years to anyone who thinks they can manage it. And also her ability to stay in Mr. King's office for three years, she leaves to anyone who has study hall so convenient. Donnie Wade leaves his nickname Peanut to Shane Early. Walter Conner leaves his meanness to Walter Britton with the con- dition that he keep it under control for future Walters. Joe Keen leaves his good looks to David Evans. The same to be worn on special occasions only. W7 Ray Lassiter leaves his bashfulness to Reuben Benthall, who, it seems, will be able to use it advantageously. Nina Miller leaves her ability to flunk French to Barbara Bryan. Daphne Tyler leaves her meanness to Ann Freeman, but to be prac- ticed as desirably as Daphne does. I. Bobby Matthews, leave my ability to court between classes to Jackie Parker who is quite skilled already in the art. Margaret Conyers leaves her typing ability to anyone who can master the art. Joe Draper leaves his ability to finish high school in three years to Shane Early whose limit must be six years, not nine. Bobby'Harrington leaves his ability to drink a Pepsi and get to school at a quarter to nine to the oncoming Harrington boys. Charlie Bolton leaves his physique to Wade Harrington who will need it for the forthcoming football season. Virginia Bobbitt leaves her ability to make 105 in English to Jackie Bryant who is in dire need of the 100. Ann Bolton leaves her nickname Ice Cube to Bobby Collier. And since Betty Ann Gatrell needs no sister , Ann leaves her title as The Meanest to her. Shirley Parks leaves her bashfulness to Annie Faye Harden who, it seems, will be able to use a little of it. ' Nancy Harvin leaves her ability to keep her weight under 100 to Louise Jenkins. Ann, Nancy, Peggy, and Margaret Conyers leave their ability to go to lunch at 12:25 to anyone who has a study hall just before lunch. And now that our sojourn in Rich Square School is ending and we realize how impoverished we are, how little we have to leave to those who follow, We resort to our kind feelings and good will. Therefore, we leave to our school and to those who follow us, a better situation, a better spirit, a higher type of citizenship than we found - at least this intangible asset we hope we are leaving. Nineteen hundred and fifty four Just keep this date in mind, For in this year there'll graduate A class of rarest kind. Perhaps not of stellar poets Or artists, wise, sublime, These folk are of humbler strand Albeit laurels they ne'er decline. Originality we lay claim to Not of defects it's true Refusing perfection unmerited But accepts some honor due. Now Nina who gaily sang, Dark eyed Daphne who could act, Virginia, the brain, did 'rithmetic And Walter, of no genius lacked. Ann won a prize in penmanship, Joe Draper with work grew wise. Joe Weaver could win with handsome looks But his brain disdained that prize. Peggy, Nancy, Shirley, and Margaret Each had her special field, And not to hardest mental problems Did any student yield. Oh! it was such a class as you Might dream and gasp about, Serious in our studies always But glad when school was out. Nations rise and nations fall, Governments show change Lands and countries often move Into periods strange. So the future days that come Will advance new things And we'll be striking in the fight Our efforts shall with honor ring. Nineteen hundred and fifty four Record this date in red Our tasks of building world brotherhood Is ours until we're dead. H We came, we saw, we conqueredn May this our experience repeat, THE CLASS OF NINETEEN FIFTY FOUR Wants victory, not defeat. Nina Millar Class Poet bl 'XSSES NJ...lJ' N 5 ,QV X 1? The teamls early season efforts showed they had much to learn, but they improved rapidly. This year's team had many possibilities and under the leadership of Coach Branch molded itself into a talented unit and into one of the best records of recent years. They anticipated surpassing the nineteen-one record of 1952-53 and capably executed in every respect. Despite the loss of four very fine players the Devils proved themselves to be a fine all-around team. Coach A. L. Vann proved that his team once more came through with a victorious record. The Devils were strong in every position. By combining speed and scoring ability and fine defensive play the Devils were able to make an impression against the finest team.
