In 50,000 miles of Steaming during the 242 day absence from Norfolk, much was asked of the men of the RICH - they gave more. lt was a fortunate coincidence, this marriage in 1968 of a fine ship and an ex- ceptional crew, for in her twenty-two years of keeping the peace, this was RlCH's first introduction to combat. They performed with distinction. He was graduated from Creighton Prep and the Creighton University, Omaha, and entered the U, S, Navy in 1951 from the Creighton Graduate School. His sea service has been served in destroyers and the amphibious force. Duty as Boat Group Commander, then First Lieutenant in U,S,S, MONTAGUE Q AKA 985 during the Korean conflict was followed by a tour as Gunnery Officer, U.S.S. MADDOX QDD 7315. Later he was Operations Officer for Commander Es- cort Squadron Three, followed by duty as Executive Officer, U.S.S. BENNER QDD 8075, all in the Pacific Fleet. ln addition to two tours of duty in the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations, Washington, D.C., Commander Whelan has completed the postgraduate course at the Defense Intelligence School and is a 1967 graduate of the U, S, Army War College. He is married to the former Marvel Anne QJohnnie5 Reynolds of Omaha. The Whelans reside with their 18 month old daughter Diane in N01-folk, Virginia. CDR Basil F. Gray, Jr., USN Executive Officer Commander Gray was born in Newport News, Virginia and attended Randolph Macon College. He entered the U,S, Naval Academy in 1950 and upon graduation in 1954, he was assigned to USS MONTROSE QAPA 2121. Fur- ther assignments included duty aboard USS PERKINS QDDR 8775, duty as instructor at ROTC, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Operations Officer on Staff of Commander De- stroyer Squadron 22, and a tour of duty in the Office of Chief of Naval Operations. Upon com- pletion of the Command and Staff Course at the Naval War College, he reported to RICH for duty as Executive Officer in July 1966 while deployed to the Northern Atlantic. While in Hong Kong, he departed for duty as Assistant Planning and Operations Officer on the Staff of Commander Second Fleet. Commander Gray is married to the for- mer Patricia Davis of Newport News, Vir- ginia, and they reside in Virginia Beach, Vir- ginia, with their four children, Deborah, Basil, Ill, Phillip and Cynthia. Lieutenant Commander Kenneth S, Mc- Burnett was born in Cedartown, Georgia. He enlisted in the U,S. Navy in 1949 and served for seven years as an Electronics Technician prior to entering Officer Candidate School at Newport, Rhode Island. Upon graduation from Officer Candidate School in August 1956, he was assigned as Signal Officer and Assistant Navigator on board USS WISCONSIN QBB-64j. Subsequent tours included: Student at U,S, Naval School of Mine Warfare, Yorktown, Virginia, Executive Officer of USS JACANA QMSC 1933, Force Communications Officer on the Staff, Commander Mine Force, Atlantic, Operations OfficerfNavigator, USS REMEY QDD 6881, Operations Officer, USS NEW QDD 8181, U,S, Naval Postgraduate School, Mon- terey, California, from which he earned a Bachelor of Science Degree, Defense Com- munications Agency, Saigon, as Chief, Sys- tems Control Branch, and later, as Chief, Defense Communications Agency Detachment, Danang, and finally as Executive Officer on board USS RICH QDD 8203 since 19 September 1968. He is married to the former Betty Jean Pilgrim of St. Simons, Island, Georgia. They have one son, Keith, and three daughters, Sharon, Joan and Terri. LCDR Kenneth S. McBurnett, USN Executive Officer
