TO iiiie: xi etee thirty- foih Almost every vear I have liad tlie privilege of offering a few good wishes to tlie fresliinen from llie desk of the Phvsics Amphitlieatre and as many to the seniors on a page in the (Campanile. For vou in the autumn of 1930 I expressed the hope thai here you would become at home in the university and learn to find your wav about in the universe. Today I hope that from the opportunities lliis place has afforded you for the exercise of vour faculties vou have gained distinction in ipialities of mind and heart such as these: imagination: magnanimilv: tenacity of purpose: courage: generosity to ideas, individuals, and institutions: j)itv wherever pity is needed: and judgment. It i.s an array of very human activities that I have ascribed to vou. There is nothing new in I he array, for its several elements are hardy virtues as old as the spirit of man. Nor are they in any way peculiar to vou, for in some degree they are exemplified among all conditions of men. In the sequence as written there is little of logic, and not much consistency. But consistency and logic alone make hardh half a man. The point is thai these half dozen human qualities are essential alike to integrity of character and lo intellectual integrity. And if I had to arrange them in order of their relative im- portance and had to pick out the best of the seven for you. I should choose the first and the last: namely, imagination and judgment: while if you were sitting in judgment on me. I shoidd very much like to imagine that you migiit find some place in your estimate for at least one of tiic three: pit . generosity, courage. {cula. MAir
