We are always gazing into the future wondering what it will hold for us. But now we pause and retrace our steps hack along the hallways of Pomeroy, the corridors of old C.H.S. and the new R.M.H.S. Thus we make a journey into the past, the past of four happy years commencing at Rice. We of the yearbook staff wish this Tower Echoes of 1960 to be an escape into the realms of 'the past. If it in any way will preserve the many happy times and good friendships we cherish, it will well have served its purpose. 2,. It is the privilege of the class of '60 to select an indi- vidual who has encouraged and inspired this senior student body, as well as many other graduating classes in the past. In view of your outstanding work in preparing hundreds of seniors to take their rightful places in life, both in higher education and in the working world, we, the class of ,60, respectfully and gratefully dedicate this Tower Echoes to you, Sister M. Baptista. We hope that it will serve as a lasting memento of our class in showing our sincere appre- ciation for the guidance and instruction you have so de- votedly given us. DEDHCATHUN We, as individuals and as a class, shall always cherish the memory of our deceased music director, Dr. Joseph Lechnyr. Dr. Lechnyr greatly influenced our lives not only in the field of music, but by giving us always a true ex- ample of a devoted Christian gentleman. It was through his dedicated work for nearly forty years that many former students of both Cathedral and Rice learned to appreciate and to perform good and wholesome music. Courtesy of H. B. Eldred 4 HN MEMURHAM loomroa Josiapn LECHNYR OUR BIISHOP HIS IEXCIELLENCY, MOST RIEVEREND ROBERT IF, JOYCE BISHOP OIF BTURLIINOTON We, the class of 1960, are deeply and sincerely grate- ful for your guidance and consideration through our years of high school. We will endeavor to live up to your expectations of us as good citizens of our country, and faithful soldiers of Jesus Christ. MUNSIIGNOJR CRQJWLEY We, the co-editors of the yearbook, take great pleasure in presenting to our readers the members of the school board. These priests have shown a spirit of dedicated in- terest in regards to our high school, and have made many sacrifices involving time and personal effort for the benefit of the school, its functions and, above all, its students. Their work is not often lauded or appreciated because of its very nature of being behind the scenes. We would, therefore, like to take this opportunity to express our heart- felt gratitude and appreciation for the able administration they have provided for our beloved Rice. MUNSIIGNOR MARKCUUX 6 SCHUUL BOARD Monsignor Crowley,s work to advance the cause of Catholic education in Vermont has earned him both our thanks and our prayers. He has always strived to better and raise the standards of Catholic schools to greater heights. It is our hope that he will continue to guide the Catholic schools of Vermont for many years to come. MONSIGNOR TIENNMEN ADM NHSTRATHUN We. the graduating class of l060. express our most sin- cere wishes for health and future success in your undertak- ing with future graduating classes of Rice Memorial High School. Now as we leave school. it is our duty to take our places as adults and to exercise the wonderful training we have received during these four years under your capahle super- vision. IYVRS. For the first time in the history of Cathedral and Rice. an art course was introduced under the instruction of Mrs. Flore Zimmerman. Techniques in artistic and modern design, oil, pastels and sketching were available. An average of twenty-five students. divided into two scheduled classes, took advantage of this opportunity. This course was recognized as a scho- lastic' subject and a half credit was attributed to it. The students, under this course, participated in poster contests and in exhibitions of their work in oil painting in associa- tion with pupils of other schools. It is hoped that the study of art will lead to a richer appreciation of culture and beauty, thereby making better adults of its recipients. 1 MRS. I if As Rice Memorial High School seniors count their blessings, they will have to number among them the happy hours spent in the ideally located, spacious library with its magnificent view of Lake Champlain, the Adirondacks, and the Green Mountains. a panorama surpassed by few schools in the state or nation. The library furnishings in light maple are simple, practical and attractive. The seating capacity of eighty-five may be increawd to one hundred. Very popular are the ten easy chairs upholstered in green and beige to match the color scheme of the room. The book collection numbers five thousand one hundred fifty books, five hundred fifteen of which have been purchased at a cost of three thousand dollars since the opening of Rice Memorial High School on February 2, 1959. The circulation of books averages one hundred twenty-five books daily, and keeps the three librari- ans. Mrs. John Donoghue, Sister Rita of jesus, F.S.E,, and Sister Mary Annita, R.S.M., and their thirty student assistants well occupied. The library assistants are all members of the NATIONAL CATHOLIC LIBRARY ASSISTANTS ASSOCIATION. The entire library personnel wish to express their gratitude to the Rice Memorial School Board, to Reverend Raymond Adams, Reverend Wendell Searles, the faculty and the student body for the excellent assistance and cooperation they have received while endeavoring to service the library efficiently. '? '? I7 Left to right: Mr. Laurence Barney, Mr. Clement Martin, Mr. Joseph Bessette Anyone who has come into our school could not help notice the cleanliness of it. The floors shine, the walls are spotless, and the heating is well regulated. This is entirely due to the Work of the corps of maintenance men who have always done an efficient job. This trio has been willing to help out at all school affairs and dances. They've been very kind and helpful to us on the yearbook staff. Their sense of humor and even disposition were present at all times. Because of this, we want to express our gratitude and appreciation and we are certain that the whole student body and members of the faculty are in accord with us. E X4 QL' ' 1 1 s df .xr 4 sf 4. Doug McCarthy, Tim Terrien, and Tom Perras, FOOTBALL The Little Indians, gridiron squad of 1959 was much more successful than the record indicates. The team lost to Brattleboro and St. Johnsbury by close margins. The '6Tribe was also the only team to defeat Rutland and Mt. St. Joseph. The biggest thrill for everyone concerned was our victory over Burlington in the final game of the season when Tom Perras scored with only two minutes showing on the clock. The Landersmen completed the season with a very respectable record of four wins and four losses. This was mainly due to hard work, hustle, and excellent coaching by Bill Landers. Ray Tafrate, Bob Noonan, and Jimmy Martin. When graduation rolls around in June it will be time for the coach to bid fare- well to such men as: ends, Tom Perras, Pete Smithg tackles, Ronnie Oliver, Pete Durochia and '6Agony Cilmoreg guards. Bill McKenzie, Pat Mahoney and Mike McGarry: center, Dave Keller: quarterback. Marty Fitzgerald: fullbacks, Tim Terrien and Jim Leddyg and halfbacks, Doug McCarthy and Armand Lcpage. To continue with our winning ways, the coach will look toward Bobby Carver, Tony Valenti, Mich Thibault, Jimmy Couture, Pete Lavalee, Dan Stone. Jerry Premo, John McLaughlin, John Donoghue, and Rodger Duquette. The seniors who are departing will regret handing in their helmets but they may be consoled by the fact that they will never have to hand in their gridiron memories. Memories like jarring tackles. recovering fumbles. and most of all defeating Burling- ton in our senior year can never grow dim. eta RICE . ................... . MT. ST. JOSEPH ...... CHEERLEADERS We dedicate these pages to the girl cheerleaders who this year overcame a great obstacle, that of having cheerleading limited to boys, only. Under the leadership of Sue Audette they encouraged our boys to renew their efforts. They cheered the teams on to victories and consoled them in defeat, Although Rice did not enjoy an especially successful season, our cheerleaders helped to pep up team and student morale, which is just as important as numerous victories.
