E' divx 5? , Since most of the students of Rice live quite a distance from the School, they therefore must seek some means of transportation in order to arrive on time. Usually it they arrive too early they like to talk about different topics such as sports or social activities. Then time draws almost to a close and they walk to the building in which they are going to spend the next six hours. After school they usually come out happy for they know that the rest of the day is theirs. They wait for a couple of their buddies and set out for home. Brother Gleeson resides at St. Patrick's Provincilate, New Rochelle, New York with his Council. The Houses in the United States are located in Cali- fornia, Montana, Illinois, New York and Washington. In the New York Area there are six high schools, four grammar schools and one college. In West Park, New York, there are three training houses for the Brothers of the Province. vw.. 1 r I ' if 3 REVEREND PATRICK H. MARTIN Rev. Patrick H. Martin, assistant at St. Mary's Church in lower New York, has been student Chaplain for three years. One day a week he comes to Rice for confessions. Each year he conducts a Day of Recol- lection for the Seniors. The self-sacrificing spirit of this man of God has proved invaluable and the student body has always cooperated whole-heartedly with its zealous Chaplain. REVEREND BROTHER WILLIAM F. Ryall and Murray and Professor Velez, under Temple presided and on the dais are many personages whose capable guidance a most successful affair was prominent in the Professional and Business life. realized. T0 filtl lllt CII lllllSlS I FAITH We, the graduating class of 1950, sincerely congratulate Brother Principal for his out- standing accomplishments in the mental and physical development of the Catholic youth under his guidance. During his fruitful tenure as head of Rice High School various improve- ments were needed throughout the building. Not procrastinating his work, the improve- ments were carefully completed, and the students welcomed their new environment. The marvelous decorations of the chapel, new equipment, the painting of the halls and classrooms of the school are convincing evi- dence of his magnanimous character. His endeavors in the spiritual education of the students have brought numerous boys to serve Christ as priests and Brothers. Rice High School sends more students to West Park than any other contemporary source. Rev. Brother O'Sullivan was born in Water- ford, Ireland some fifty-two years ago and after finishing his secondary education. he proceeded to dedicate his life to Christian youth by becoming a member of the Christian Brothers of Ireland. His early teaching days found him at Mount St. Francis and St. Bona- venture's College in St. Iohn's, Newfound- land. He was then sent to All Hallows, New York and then to St. Leo's. Chicago where he brought the football team to the pinnacle of success. Then Brother O'Sullivan completed his required studies at Gonzaga University where he was awarded the degree of Master of Arts. In 1944, he was appointed principal of Rice High School. We wish Brother O'Sul- livan the best of luck in his glorious work for They that shall instruct others unto justice shall shine as stars for all eternity. Rev. Donald Hartman, first graduate of Rice to be raised to the Holy Priesthood, graduated from our school in 1942. I-le entered the Salvatorian Iunior Seminary and on completing the courses prescribed entered the Maior Seminary of St. Mary at Emmitsburg, Maryland. Father Hart- man has been assigned to a diocese in the mid- west. May Our Blessed Lord grant him long and fruitful ears and ma Father Hartman be Brother Principal complies with the many requests for his autograph. Normally, swimming periods are held each period of the day tor the various classes, but this year, because of the drastic water shortage the pool has had very little use. Top Lett: Our well-equipped library is stocked with many hundred volumes of the type that make reading a pleas- ure. It conforms to the lists prepared by the Board oi Regents and is under the direction of a competent librar- ian. G pR', The Curriculum at Rice otters a wide variety ot subjects. For the first two years the students are screened toward their general educational needs. At the end ot Sophomore Year the Faculty Advisor attempts to outline a course ot study in one of the three fields offered. As tar as possible, the student is assigned to that field in which he is most apt to succeed as reflected in a series of tests conducted at regular intervals. Arts, Science and Business courses as regulated by the State Department ot Education, Board of Regents, are brought to a successful con- clusion with the presentation ot a diploma testifying the titness ot the student to take his place in the world. A large percentage ot the Student body wends its way to institutions ot higher learning. Many go directly into the business world and some go into specialized fields. Several of the graduating classes have had one or more State Scholarships. A rep- resentative number ot each class enters Semi- naries or Novitates ot Religious Orders. In the short history of our school, our achievements in varsity track meets have not been too notable. This year, starting with the Cross-Country Season, the team has shown that Rice is ready to take its place among the other schools of the city as a ranking con- tender in Catholic High School varsity com petition. The Irish Christian Brothers' Cross Country Meet saw Rice take its first varsity track title. Led by Gene Holmes, who finished third in the race, the squad won the meet by the comfortable margin of fifteen points. The other members of the team who finished among the first fifteen, to help clinch the title were, Frank Leahy, Mike Radigan, Iohn Brennan and Iohn Fahey. This triumph was a fitting climax to a season of hard work on the part of the team and Mr. Carroll, their coach. nl' HIESIIMA CIIIISS-lillll llll Rice's Freshman Cross-Country Team was one of the city's best this year. Led by Matt Hennessey and Dan Shea, the team hung up a notable string of victories. In practice meets, Loughlin, Fordham Prep, Bishop Du- Bois, Seton Hall, and Power Memorial were among our victims. In championship compe- tion, Rice won the Bronx-Manhattan-Wesb chester Title and the Irish Christian Brothers' Title. Both of these meets saw Matt Hen- nessey establish new records tor the course. Dan Shea, the team's other star, linished third in the Bronx-Manhattan-Westchester Meet in a field of over one hundred competitors. In the Irish Christian Brothers' Meet he was again right behind Hennessey. The other members ol the team, who shared most in the triumphs were, Roy Crombie, Ed Delgado and Carmine DeSantis. The Freshman Squad, led by Hennessey and Shea, who are iust out of the picture, starting against Fordham and DuBois. Matt and Dan linished one, two in an easy team triumph. ALE, nhl.. . Continuing the trend started during the Edward Delgado running hard to qual- ify his team for the finals in the Iunior relay in the Catholic High School Championships. Gene Holmes strides to an easy victory in the 600 yard run at N.Y.U. meet. Bob Henderson, taking over the lead right after he had suffered a very se- vere fall which caused the first race to be called back. Dan Shea, a capable sprinter as well as an ace distance runner, about to receive the stick and hold the lead. Harry Evans, Catholic High School high jump champion for two years, in his winning effort at the Garden this year. Cross-Country season, the Rice varsity track team proved its ability by placing fourth among all the Catholic High Schools in the city in the C.H.S.l-LA. Championship Meet. Harry Evans, senior high jump champion, and Louis Andrade, senior 50 yard dash champion were the outstanding performers. VARSITY SWIMMI li Although the swimming season was cut short by the acute water shortage, the varsity swimmers gave a good account of them- selves. With two easy victories over Power and Manhattan and a close one over Regis, they brought their season total to three wins and three losses. With Belardi showing the way, the freestylers were in the first two scoring positions every time. K. Flores and D. Sullivan performed very well against much older and more experienced swimmers. Much praise should also be given to W. Morrissey, G. O'Neil, C. Tyson, E. Consay, I. McMahon, and P. Rotchford. With these sophomores, F. Ramppen and W. Green are looking forward to a very good season next year. G. O'Nei1 of Room 241 was presented the annual swim- ming award. HIESHMA SWIMMI li With eight victories against no defeats, this years' team increased the Frosh record to twenty-two straight wins. M. Teehan and R. O'Brein were the pacemakers for the squad, Both of these individuals were undefeated for the year. R. McCredie and I. Sullivan were always fighting each other for the winning spot in the forty yards. M. Clark, I. Fazzino, I. Tansey, D. Ebbecke also participated in our freestyle attack. The backstroke armada was capably handled by O'Brien and I. McCabe. T. Rooney and I. THE lilit llllllt At Graduation last year, the Glee Club made a great hit, and, as soon as school was recommenced, work was begun to make it even better this year. However, boys must be growing up more quickly now-a-days, for sufficient Sopranos and Altos could not be obtained and the Club had to convert into a men's choir with two Tenor and two Bass sections. About twenty freshmen f of the larger varietyl were drafted to complete the sections which now contain a total of sixty members. Their first attempt at fame was at the Christmas Concert where they presented a cantata, The Song of Christmas, arranged Front Row, Heft to rightl: Iames Hayes, George O'Neill, Kasper Mannix, George Andreu, Donald Ebbecke, Iohn Corr, Iohn Walsh, Vincent McGurk, Iames Lynch, Den- nis Mahoney, Edward Martinez, Vincent Histon, Charles Powell, Charles Scott. One of the reasons why the Founder and the Edmundian have such appeal to the students is the pictures they contain. Many of these pictures were taken and developed by members of the Camera Club. This valuable activity is under the careful supervision of Bro. E. McEnroe and consists of a small, but skilled number of stu- dents of photography. At any track meet or baseball game you are sure to find a member of the camera club with his trusty camera. The Rice darkroom is fully equipped and has modern facilities for developing, printing, and coloring photos. During the vocation week, the camera club displays its beautiful collection of pictures taken at the West Park Novitiate. SPA ISH P PER Oye organ of the Span sh Department at Rice has received commendation from several educational sources throughout the City Professor Velez head of the Depart ment has instituted this periodical to bring home in a more forceful manner to the Stu dents in his Department the complete un derstanding of the culture of the Spanish Language. Edited and published by the Spanish Club under the Professor's super- vision, this school activity has been instru- mental in arousing a greater interest in a great language. THE llllllllll STAFF Our modern library is of great aid to stu- dents engaged in research work for term papers and reference works. Its primary use is for the pupils' own personal enjoyment, as there.is a large selection of novels and bio- graphical works. The volumes are replaced as soon as they are damaged and new books are constantly being added. The library is under the capable management of Bro. Long. assisted by Christopher Boland, Rm. 442, Iames Whitfield 454, Donald Fay 246, and Raymond Dickey 241. IHI BAHIC lIlIIB Wherever the sons of Erin traverse they have brought with them the faith and culture of their motherland. No small wonder then that we find in Rice a large representation of Irish-American boys eager to learn the language of St. Patrick and St. Brigid, and to show their prowess in Gaelic football, and in the history and literature of their fore- fathers. Our boys will be well represented this year at the Peis and the Aeridheacht and the football team has reached a peak beyond all expectations. Mark Towers, popular orchestra leader, provided the music. An exceptionally well- prepared menu was served. Several members of the faculty were present. lt was generally felt that the selection of the Park Sheraton was a happy one and that the occasion left many with memories that will last a lifetime. The air of excitement, which could compare fav- orably with night club surroundings, had reached its peak at the Prom! Should old acquaintance be for- got was the understood motto of the Prom. The Committee under the capable chairman- ship of Mr. Pefer Crotty and Mrs. Terence Smith, gave generously of their time and energy. Several of the ex-pupils returned both to work on the Committee and to support the affair.
