THE VARSITY this year, with nine Seniors on the team, did not produce a winning record but far more important they displayed outstanding sportsmanship and fine fighting hearts which Union is famous for producing. Our record for this year was three wins and five losses. At the start of the season we played Lawrence Park and came out with a 7-0 victory which was thrilling up to the last seconds. Then came two league defeats from Wesleyville and North Eastg we were leading both teams at the half-time but then both opposing teams carne back with their winning touchdowns. It has been said that our tea.m put up the toughest battles against these two teams that ended up with good records. Then came Millcreek at their Homecoming. We were determined to reverse last year's score when they beat us at our Homecoming. We went out in front in the first quarter 6-0 and we played winning ball in the second quarter. They got a touchdown and extra point in the third period but we were out-gaining them in yardage. Time ran out when we were but ten yards from their goaline in the fourth period. We had outplayed them but the score hadn't shown it. The Franklin game was a game of bad breaks for us. Although they were highly rated we drove down to their two yard line and then we fumbled and they recovered. We had a few more drives and our team was clicking but again we were on the short end of the score, losing 13-O. Our Homecoming Game was with Harborcreekg it was also Mom's Night. Al- though we lost 13-7 we showed we could come from behind and fight all the way. We played our old and bitter rival Albion, and in the best Union tradition we de- feated them 27 to 14. With the seniors leading the way, Union crushed Mercer by the score of 26 to 0. In the win and loss record department our team was not exceptional but they never let down when the going got rough. There was terrific line play by all- county tackle, Bruce Getz, Captain Carl Meeder, Bob Russin, and center Bill Youschak. At the ends, we had performers in Frank Hlifka and our punter George Fish. Our backfield was light but fast, we had very good runners in Dick Harbaugh, Larry Baker, Bob Einfeldt, and Bill Pestalek. The passing and play-calling de- partment was headed by Ted Woitovich and Larry Baker. It is not whether you won the game, the value is how you played in it and what kind of sportsmanship you displayed. We think the student body will agree that his year's team ranks high in both.
