Now, due to increase in population, this school, as it stands, has become inadequate to accommodate the needs of the students. We, the Class of 1955, will be the last class to graduate from the unexpanded halls of Union. We hereby leave this book in memory of the Union High we knew and loved. The hardwork, ingenity, and patience displayed by our directors, Mr. Come and Mr. Morris, resulted in a play we think was one of the finest. The setting of the play was in the classroom of Miss Brooks in Girard, Penna., in the Spring time. The plot centered around the troubles Miss Brooks had trying to land a husband, direct a play, and keep peace with the school board and principal at the same time. No matter what ridiculous problems Miss Brooks was faced with she always managed to solve them. In our future years we believe that remembering our senior class play will give us much pleasure. We then, as well as now, will always remember the good times and many little difficulties we encountered producing this play, it was one of the most import- ant events of our senior year. THE VARSITY this year, with nine Seniors on the team, did not produce a winning record but far more important they displayed outstanding sportsmanship and fine fighting hearts which Union is famous for producing. Our record for this year was three wins and five losses. At the start of the season we played Lawrence Park and came out with a 7-0 victory which was thrilling up to the last seconds. Then came two league defeats from Wesleyville and North Eastg we were leading both teams at the half-time but then both opposing teams carne back with their winning touchdowns. It has been said that our tea.m put up the toughest battles against these two teams that ended up with good records. Then came Millcreek at their Homecoming. We were determined to reverse last year's score when they beat us at our Homecoming. We went out in front in the first quarter 6-0 and we played winning ball in the second quarter. They got a touchdown and extra point in the third period but we were out-gaining them in yardage. Time ran out when we were but ten yards from their goaline in the fourth period. We had outplayed them but the score hadn't shown it. The Franklin game was a game of bad breaks for us. Although they were highly rated we drove down to their two yard line and then we fumbled and they recovered. We had a few more drives and our team was clicking but again we were on the short end of the score, losing 13-O. Our Homecoming Game was with Harborcreekg it was also Mom's Night. Al- though we lost 13-7 we showed we could come from behind and fight all the way. We played our old and bitter rival Albion, and in the best Union tradition we de- feated them 27 to 14. With the seniors leading the way, Union crushed Mercer by the score of 26 to 0. In the win and loss record department our team was not exceptional but they never let down when the going got rough. There was terrific line play by all- county tackle, Bruce Getz, Captain Carl Meeder, Bob Russin, and center Bill Youschak. At the ends, we had performers in Frank Hlifka and our punter George Fish. Our backfield was light but fast, we had very good runners in Dick Harbaugh, Larry Baker, Bob Einfeldt, and Bill Pestalek. The passing and play-calling de- partment was headed by Ted Woitovich and Larry Baker. It is not whether you won the game, the value is how you played in it and what kind of sportsmanship you displayed. We think the student body will agree that his year's team ranks high in both. The first day of practice was a tough day for our boys, but the fellows were ready to go in time for the first game with Lawrence Park which they won 7-0. Then their next string of five games were total heartbreaks of sorrowing upsets. After these five rugged games, the fellows thought they ought to win their last two games. So they poured on the steam and under the great advice of Coach Murray and Coach Morris, with Captain Carl Meeder assisting, they rolled over Albion by the score of 27 to 14, also Mercer by the score of 32 to 0. Football at Union has been a great tradition. Union has had many fine teams of the gridiron but greater is the fighting spirit which has been handed down through the years of Union's existence. It seems as though whether Union High has a winning record or not, the boys still put up the good old high school try. We believe that this year's team has done just that. This year our Junior Varsity team, under the direction of Coach Morris, had a mild season. The fellows fought hard and tried to do their best, but two ga.mes were lost, one game won, and one game tied. The Junior Varsity is the main backbone under the va.rsity team. Here is where they are taught the rules of fair play and good sportsmanship. It is when the varsity fellows graduate from Union that they really depend on the Junior Varsity to fill all the varsity positions. 5 4 5 3 R. Katzeman E l0R The boys pictured to the ri ght played their last B, Getz season of football here at Union. Out of this group there were six line- men and three backfield men, each doing his best while he was in there playing. This year's group of managers is the largest one in Union history. With our increased sports department it has been necessary to raise the number of managers. All the managers have and are doing a fine job and under the fine leadership of Head Football Manager Tom Leroux and Head Basketball Man- ager Allen Amidon, our boys deserve an extra hand. We of the sports staff salute you! Too many times the manager or water bucket boy is the forgotten man on the team. We have found that no team can be without a manager. They often are here at the high school hours before and after the players have practiced and have gone home. We again salute you. CUACHI G STAFF Our coaching staff this year consists of four able men, Mr. Murray, head foot- ball and basketball coach, Mr. Morris, Assistant football and junior high basket- ball coach, Mr. Lepich, J.V. basketball coach tabsent when picture was takenj and Mr. Come, who will be our baseball coach and is our faculty manager. Under Coach Murray's guidance we won the 1954 B Class Crown and al- though our record in this year's football wasn't successful as far as records go, Coach Red taught us good, hard, clean and sportsmanlike football. Our basketball season to date, under his guidance, has proven to be successful. Mr. Morris and Mr. Lepich combined their ability in coaching the J.V. football and J.V. basketball teams respectively. Under Mr. Morris the J.V. football team had a successful season. To date the J.V. basketball team has been winning re- gularly. Mr. Come is a new-comer to the coaching staff but not to coaching. Under his guidance as Faculty Manager, he has improved our sporting department greatly. We know he will bring us a good team on the diamond. Besides baseball, track will also be offered for the first time. Mr. Murray will be in charge of this year's crew. We are beginners in this sport but we know we will field a good team. Klein, L. Stubbe, Coach R. Murray. The Varsity this year has continued its self pace that it ended with last season. Having eight returning letter winners from last year, the varsity won its first three games before dropping its first and only game to date to Conneaut, Ohio. The team then returned to the winning column by defeating all its opponents up to Christmas Vacation. They then made Union history by winning the first Class B County Holliday Tournaxnent held at Albion. All the Class B teams in the county competed. From there the team went on, winning the first half County Class B Championship. Our team has been averaging about 65 pts. per game but the boys realize that winning the game is the most important thing because that is what counts. There are nine Seniors on the team who have brought back their experience from last year. An unusual fact about our team is that all of our first starting five have been high scorers in our games so far. This has helped us greatly because our opponents may stop a few of us, but not all. The boys know that the greatest test will come in the race for the second half crown, they will be trying their utmost to eliminate a playoff at the end of the season. Lots of luck, fellows. Led by their Captain Bobby Bowen the boys have been playing good, steady, basketball. Coach Lepich has been using almost all the boys in their gamesg this will benefit each player and will bring about better future varsity teams. The Junior Varsity's are not too tall, but what they lack in height they make up for in speed in their fast breaks. We wish the junior varsity players a lot of luck and a successful season! ! !
