Graduation from high school is a day of pride and Jubilation for every graduate. You have reached this high point not only because of the teaching and guidance of your teachers, but also because of the encouragement of your parents and your own interest in your future. Your parents, friends and members of the James Ford Rhodes staff are proud of your accomplishments. Graduation from high school may be looked upon in two ways. It may be looked upon as the end of a long road or the beginning of a new journey. I encourage you to look forward and to the future rather than backward and to the past. I suggest that you plan now for greater accomplishments and higher achievements in the future while remaining proud of your past achievements. Thomas H. Huxley stated: The steps of a ladder were never meant to rest upon, but only to hold a man's foot long enough to enable him to put the other somewhat higher. Look upon your graduation from James Ford Rhodes High School as a stepping stone to higher achievements. If your goal is small, you can never accomplish much. Set your aims high and never be satisfied with less than your best. If you aim for the sun, you may hit a star. There is no shame in having tried and failed; the shame is not having the courage to try for higher goals. Always work for higher accomplishments and goals through study, perseverance, hard work and commitment to reach your desired goal. I hope that you will continue your education in college or in some form of post-high school training. President James A. Garfield stated well the importance of education with this statement: Next in importance to freedom and justice is education, without which neither freedom nor justice can be permanently maintained. ZAND MUSIC 28 SENIORS VANESSA PORTER - SENIOR CLASS PRESIDENT Rhodes has seen many seniors come and go, but I don’t think it has seen a class like the Class of 1987. We are unique, not only because of familiarity, being brothers and sisters to each other, but also because of leadership. This class will produce some of the greatest leaders of our time. I think that I am one of those leaders, and it is very hard to say goodbye to my family and friends and. like them, go out into the world to try to become a successful leader. I hope the leadership that this class has conveyed can be passed on to the future senior, junior, and sophomore classes. They say that one's high school years are the happiest and most memorable of one's life. The James Ford Rhodes graduating Class of 1987 wholeheartedly agrees.
