MATHEWS FIRST PRINCIPAL OF JAMES FORD RHODES HIGH SCHOOL 1932-33 1936-62 - honor. NEIL D. MATHEWS whose especial NCERN FOR THE INDIVIDUAL HAS GIVEN THIS SCHOOL ITS SINGULAR TONE AND CHARACTER THE NEIL D. MATHEWS FOUNDATION HAS BEEN ESTABLISHED SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS ARE 353 RONALD HCRT2INC We at Rhodes are part of a long tradition of excellence in education which began forty-nine years ago under the leadership of Neil D. Matthews. As our first principal. Mr. Matthews served as a model for all Rhodes students with his enduring loyalty, dedication and concern for scholastic excellence. His tradition is carried on to this day in the award which bears his name. The Neil D. Matthews scholarship is awarded each year to a deserving student in the senior class. James Ford Rhodes is considered to be the first American political historian. Our school, which opened in 1932, commemorates his contributions to present historical views. His ideals have served as an ongoing inspiration to each graduating class. 6 New Friers Each school year is a new beginning. This year is our new beginning. For the seniors it is the start of a new era. We will graduate this year and we will enter the real world.” Although it seems like an ending, graduation is really a Genesis, a fresh start. 8 9 Our Friends ... 10 11 JUNIOR PROM 12 13 14 ... a time of growth and change ... young yet old, naive yet mature... afraid yet confident... Our friends are the alpha and omega of our high school experience. 15 Our Community 14 16 The last three years that I have spent at Rhodes I have established lifelong friends and memories I will hold onto for the rest of my life. I am very proud of this school and I'm glad I can call it mine. Though I will be moving on with my life and spending another four years in college. I will never forget the wonderful times and the good education I got by growing up at Rhodes High School. Sandy Bruggeman ... I have learned that co-operation works both ways. You can’t expect to get anywhere if you don’t put in your own efforts to get there. Joe Pivato High school gives you the tools and like every craftsman you must use these tools to build your future. Julius Lukacs The Afters of Tomorrow Just a little more, please a lot more Knowledge, a little more fun. Could it be real? Is it for play? Give and take an ounce of knowledge day by day. I am not afraid of the afters of tomorrow They should be full of happiness but could be filled with sorrow. Choices to be made, responsibility has begun Education is a painful, continual all important work to be done. By example and sharing, by kindness and caring — but above all by respect. Try it. Take my life away. it is my knowledge that I will protect. Could it be real? Is It for play? Give and take an ounce of knowledge day by day. I heard the world whisper that it is very hard to get way up on top. I promise the world ... I'll use what I have... And get what the world has got. Cheryl D. Cofield Death is inevitable so have fun and enjoy while you can. Kathy Gall Rhodes has proven to me that life cannot be fulfilled without the beauty of friendship. Tom Mravetz I have learned many lessons and been impressed by a few educators. I’m glad I’m moving on — it’s time for a change. Kathleen Marvis Rhodes High The time has come for us to part. Our individual lives we must start. The Years we have spent'toegether as one, Will remind us of the things we have done. Remember: Car washes, skating parties and bake sales Busing notices that came through the mail. Staying awake until two. studying for a test, Then just trying to do one’s very best. Two years of strikes by the teachers. Loyal fans sitting in the bleachers. Volleyball and football in the fall. And then in winter, track and basketball. When we look back upon these years. The memories may bring forth tears. In our heart ’till the day we die. We shall hold a part of Dear Old Rhodes High. Susan Long Nonconformity is the key to all great discoveries. Never be afraid to be different, and always speak your mind. David Sprague It is very hard for people to be different within Rhodes. In order to be accepted and liked, everyone must move with accepted styles. This is unfortunate, but I hope we will learn to accept people for what they are, and learn to search for new and innovative ways of expression. Jeannine Woos We came to America from India two years ago. Not knowing anything about American ways, we were anxious to find out. We were put in a Lau Compliance class, with other foreign students. Miss Ghattas. our teacher, was so understanding and patient with us. She really helped us a lot. We are very thankful to have had this special class and special teacher. Mahrug and Shahrug Nazeeruddin My years at Rhodes have shown growth in both my height and shoe size. Eric Rouge S 17 2Q h hOCO Future To laugh often and love much; To win the respect of intelligent persons and the affection of children; To earn the approval of honest critics and endure the betrayal of a false friend: To appreciate beauty; To find the best in others; To give of one's self without the slightest thought of return; To have accomplished a task, whether by a healthy child, a rescued soul, a garden patch, or a redeemed social condition; To have played and laughed with enthusiasm, and sung with exultation: To know that even one life has breathed easier because you have lived; This is to have succeeded. 18 Vi •5ft Higher Education ... Employment ... Armed Services... Marriage. These are the possible roads for our futures. Each of us has a specific goal involving one or more of these. Our years here at Rhodes have helped one and all in preparation for the future. As we now leave, we begin anew. This is the Genesis of Ourselves. 19 Giving ... Caring ... Understanding ... Advising CHEC ... Operating the ticket booth at basketball games... Chaperoning proms... Attending skating parties... Aiding people in the community. The Senior Class of 1981 would like to thank Miss Kuebler for her patience, guidance, and constant willingness to extend herself to others. 20 21 V To the Class of 1981: Dear Seniors: Rhodes High School is justifiably proud of you. Your spirit and hard work have overcome many obstacles in your path to this graduation year. So, we expect great things from you as you become an important chapter in the history of James Ford Rhodes High School. Frances A. Nugent Aft 22 25 Senior Class Officers Left to Right: Linda Rooks. Treas Graduation marks a time in our lives when our high school years have ended and we begin the quest to find what the world holds for us. The Class of '81 in itself is very special, as it was the first class to graduate under successful desegregation. This class has provided the school with many honors, both athletic and academic. The future belongs to us. and we can make of it whatever we want. Matt Nakon Senior Class Representatives 26 Standing. Left to Right: Lynn Mudra. Rene Zioi. Tom Mravetz. Lisa Zolac. Sue Simomk. The WEWS helicopter Chopper 5 helped to make this project a success. The helicopter landed in the east parking lot. and the Ripcho Studio photographer climbed in. Our story was important enough to appear on the news telecast that night. The class of 1981 is newsworthy! 130 Rhodes students demonstrated their generosity on December 5, 1980, when the Red Cross brought its blood bank to our school. We surpassed our goal of 50 pints. Although there were several sore arms, it was a worthwhile experience. The entire Northeast Ohio area benefited from the blood given. Rhodes has many talented musicians and vocalists as evidenced by our fine orchestra, band and choir. They joined together to put on the annual Christmas program on December 18 for the P.T.A. and on December 23 for the student body. An unique touch was added by the hearing-impaired chorus, who performed ‘‘Silent Night” in sign language. 132 Christmas spirit was brought to Rhodes by the Student Council Cabinet. The main hallway was adorned with the lovely tree pictured on this page, which was put up by the cabinet. 133 On December 18, 1980. athletic Rhodians were cheered on by fellow students at the Winter Rally. This rally honored the football team, both the boys’ and girls’ basketball teams, girls' volleyball team, the bowling team and the cross country team. This rally paid tribute to those teams whose seasons had ended and to those whose seasons had just begun. 134 venj kin. j nore 6eau7)fu) when if }s Sha.re.di in. Ron Addison, a 1972 Rhodes graduate, visited Rhodes on December 19, 1980 while in the Cleveland area for a track clinic. Addison is currently working at the Athletics West, and plans to compete for a place on the 1984 U.S. Olympic Team. Addison was accompanied by world class runner Mary Decker, who the world record for the indoor currently holds mile. 136 137 ecial tribute to the hostages, Pages B1 to B ‘m The Cleveland Press C Shuttle is test-fired bsj: E OSTAGE DEAL SIGNEI zedom delayed until funds are transferrec MCLLmA JLO Reagans Victory a Landslide f STORUS lOSTAGES N J Rrrtra llw ' SAvl Vrt IN Ihr • ■' - .• •« «n N 1 .S vtj.w cr «hr r«j • part Trt flrr ■r nil fMIvriUMU It I. tv oat) ■ Ijm • -• m «.r ,-i Hortf i ■ • V fv .rrr rwr ty.+ M f rr No W a-old ft Ufcr (or «n . The Class of 1981 is the latest link in a chain which encompasses a forty-nine year tradition of excellence. Throughout these years we have witnessed changes in the world and in Rhodes High School, as well as many personal changes, which have left their mark in the form of new friends, ideas, and standards. This book is an expression of the dreams and realities of the past three years. We leave here with a firm foundation of experience, yet we leave a part of ourselves behind as we begin a new chapter in our lives. There is so much to express in so little time; and what can be said, when we can’t say, “See you in September?” 151 Now this is not the end. It is not even the beginning of the end. But it is, perhaps, the end of the beginning. 15 CLEVELAND PUBLIC LIBRARY
