Text from Pages 1 - 266 of the 1970 volume:

foreword - When do you graduate? - In January of 1970. - January? How did you manage that? - I started school in January. - Oh ... I still don't understand. - Well, everyone in the class was born between October and February, so ... January classes are often confronted with these questions. The best answer would be to tell the story of the stars influence. Only people born under the signs of Libra, Scorpio, Sag-gitarius. Capricorn, and Aquarius belong to a January class. Stars, be on our side. 2 4 You must be willing to pay dedication the price for success. This motto is typical of the teacher who has set a fine example for us in citizenship, sportsmanship, and patriotism. During his years at Rhodes, he has served as football andwrestling coach, teacher, and advisor. His concern has earned our respect. He is a one-man booster club for the 12A class. 5 principal's message TO YOUR CLASS January. 1970 Congratulations are in order to each of you. You have our very best wishes. Now you face a future beyond high school. You will be living in a country and a world where our interests constantly will be related to the needs and Interests of others. Your high school years have been historic ones. When you were entering high school, man was making elementary steps into space. During your senior year, three brave Americans journeyed to the moon and landed there. Perhaps this astounding feat will emphasize that each of you, in your own way, will need to be an explorer. You will make your own discoveries, seek your own triumphs, and endure your own failures. Well, seniors, you are strong enough to do it. We are confident you will find a way to live useful lives during which you will find a way to provide service needed by others. Good luck to each of you in the January, 1970 class. Thank you for the friendly cooperation and help the members of your class have offered Rhodes High School. 6 MR. MICHAEL MASSA. Kent State University, MISS MARJORIE.HINE, Kent State University, B. When we look back upon what we have done And think about what we will do We will often recall the many experiences that made up our years at high school. And we will use our past knowledge s we move Onward and Upward JAMES F. Dedication He has Hone big things for our class; He has guided our endeavors as a class since we were Juniors. He has also done little things for our class; Like smiling and saying “Hello” when we see him in the halls. He has never been too busy to talk with us. Because he has become our friend. We dedicate our Yearbook to— Mr. Jack Bonza. 4 A Great Guy 6 Mr. In sincere appreciation of all you have done for us. To Your Class June, 1970 This fine yearbook will become quite a treasure as the years go by. It records by picture or words some of your activities during your school years at 5100 Biddulph Avenue. However, your yearbook cannot record all the pertinent facts about your character, loyalty, cooperation, or heart. Some of the first heart transplants were taking place during your high school years. However, the “heart traits you have been acquiring cannot be transplanted. They can only be demonstrated to others. These traits you have been developing should help you face a future beyond high school. You have probably sensed by this time that using knowledge is much more important than acquiring it. Thank you for the cooperation, leadership, and help the members of your class have offered Rhodes High School. Your friendly cooperation is much appreciated. It leads us to hope. too. that your practice in working toward worthwhile goals in our school will be useful to you in your future activities. Best wishes to each of you in the June, 1970 class. It has been a great pleasure to be with you during your three years at Rhodes High School. J. J. Stillinger Principal 7 Assistant Principals MISS MARJORIE MINE Kent State University, B.S. The American Field Service makes it possible for foreign exchange students to live and attend high school in another country. This was the first year Rhodes participated in the program. Fund-raising activities to finance Mike Tehoul's stay at Rhodes, to bring another student to Rhodes next year, and to send a Rhodian overseas have included a spaghetti dinner and a homeroom collection. The cost per student is $850. The exchange students live with an adopted family while they visit, attend a local high school, and have the experience of living in a different cultural environment. 113 MICHKLE TF.BOUL hi ! Although picked by the experts to place near the bottom, Rhodes finished the season with a fine 5-1 record. Rhodes had the chance to he Senate champions until a heartbreaking defeat by Marshall. ( 13-12). and a loss to St. Ignatius. (28-6). The season began with a win over Maple Heights, (22-0). followed by two varsity losses; to Ray Village I I 1-12 . and Willoughby South. (56-6). The Bay Village game was an exciting one. climaxed by a 76 yard touchdown pass from Ron Buchwald to Paul Zajac. and a try for two points that would have lied the game if it had been successful. The Ram‘ loss to p o w e r f ii I Willoughby South was a game most of us would like to forget. Then the gridders scored four impressive victories over Lincoln. Holy Name. W est Tech, and South. In these games the defense allowed the opposition to score no more than twelve points. The Holy Name game provided the most exciting play of the sea- son when Don Gallagher returned a kickoff 75 yards for a touchdown. The Rams closed out tin season with losses to John Marshall and St. Ignatius. Outstanding for the varsity were seniors R o n Buchwald. Don Gallagher, and Paul Zajac. who made the A11-West Senate team. John Ofcar. Joel Havris, Kyle Hancock, and Rich Garuccio also made important contributions to the fine team effort that brought Rhodes its first winning sea-on since 1%3. JEANNE VLADIK A Cheerleaders Rams Play Frustrating Season One of the most frustrating seasons in Rhodes basketball history occurred this year when the Ranis compiled a 7-10 record. This year’s team could not match the teams of the last two years in victories hut they made up for it in excitement. With a little luck the Rams could have finished the season 11-5 but because of losses to Marshall by one point. Max Hayes by two points, and two losses to West Tech, one in double overtime and one in triple overtime, they could do no better than fifth place in the West Senate. Even the Rhodes' magic in the sectionals was not to be this year as the Rams dropped a close game to Berea by eight points. Four seniors comprised the bulwark of the team—Ron Buchwald. John (Hear. Paul Zajac, and Fred Guger, who joined the team at midterm. John Ofear led the West Senate in scoring for tin first half of the season and also shared the team lead in rebounds. Ron Buchwald came on strong at the end of the season after getting off to a slow start and tied Ofear for the lead in rebounds. Paul Zajac was the Rams’ most steady player and earned Press Star ami Plain Dealer Dream Team honors with his twenty-seven point performance against Lorain Southview. 144 Front Uou, Left to Right: Marly Poulo-. Leading the grapplers were January graduate Tom Hadgis, who placed first in the 175 pound division, senior Fred Leickley who captured second in the 185 pound division, and underclassmen Jim Bindernagel and Bruce Ryan who took third places, and Jeff Reisner and George Saradakis who took fourth places. Under new head coach Mr. Letzner the Rams finished the season with a 4-6 record. Contributing greatly to the season were seniors Fred Leic kley, Steve Kuzyk. and Larry Garuccio. Despite some outstanding individual performances by Fred Leickley, Tom Hadgis, and Bruce Ryan this was mainly a rebuilding year for the team. I.tfc to Right: Varsity Coarh Mr. I tznrr. Brurr Ryan.
