' L AtiWIP ul TO A S CCHHlfi'i FOREWORD In this thirty-sixth edition of the Rhodes Yearbook, our aim has been to depict every phase of our high school life. Within are pictures, grave and gay, pictures that will remind us of the friends we have had, the good times we have known, the rooms and halls through which we have passed, through the years to come. The purpose in compiling this yearbook is to create something which will be a living memory of your high school days, and will grow more interesting through the passing years, and not live for today but also for tomorrow. When various members of this class have reached the top of the ladder as past records of their achievements indicate they will obtain, we shall want to look again at the jovial, informal shots that reflect these happy days of comradeship at Rhodes. Deepest expressions of gratitude are due to the school administration and our class adviser, Mr. Tcmplin, for their unfailing assistance and wise counsel. Thanks also are due to the teaching staff, whose members have been helpful, patient, and tolerant of the Yearbook Committee’s struggles to compile the material that has gone into this yearboook. The entire class should appreciate the co-operation of the staff members who appear in the faculty picture. No school record could be complete without that most important of all factors—the teaching staff! Students will remember these men and women with deep gratitude. Members of the senior class and many under-class members have cooperated in supplying the hundreds of snapshots that appear on these memory-filled pages. No words can express the loyalty, hard work, and co-operation of the members of the Yearbook Committee. In addition to willingly assuming their share of grueling routine work, members of this committee have made special contributions. Irene Sidor drew the inside covers. With Joyce Luther and Judy Schill she also wrote the Class History. Gretchen Lingg, Joe McCreary, Barb Smith, and Virginia Valchar composed the Class Prophecy. The Class Will is the work of Nick Emigholz, Carl Kubala, and Bob Melcher. Jay Hetherington and Otto Reidl wrote the Dedication and Farewell to the counsellors. Ed Lock, along with Jay and Joe, is due a vote of thanks for putting the montage pages together. And now, Classmates, this Yearbook is yours. We leave it to your mercies, and we hope, to your enjoyment. If you feel it is YOUR Yearbook, we have succeeded in our endeavors. It is for you to determine whether or not we have accomplished our purpose. The Editor MISS EDITH CHERRINGTON DEDICATEE To Miss Cherrington, who has devoted so much time, thought, and patience in preparing us to face the future with confidence, we, the graduating class of June, 1957, sincerely and with deep gratitude dedicate this yearbook. Not only have you been a great influence on your girls, but you have also shown a sincere desire to aid many of the boys to overcome difficulties encountered during our stay at James Ford Rhodes. Through your help and counselling, we have gained in knowledge and wisdom which will be of great value in attaining our goals. We will always remember you as a loyal and helpful friend. THE SENIOR CLASS JUNE, 1957 WM Members of the Class of June, 1957: You are citizens of the only country in the world the government of which is based solidly on the principle of individual liberty. You are guaranteed by the constitution of that country the greatest individual freedom compatible with the freedom of every other citizen. To protect this guarantee, each of you in the years ahead constantly must be alert to your share of the responsibility for its preservation. It is our hope that in the years you have spent at Rhodes High School, you may have been helped to realize some of your responsibilities and some of the ways in which you may fulfill your obligations of citizenship. Best wishes to each of you. Neil D. Mathews MISS PALMER As we approached the senior year, we suddenly realized that soon we would be facing new and more difficult problems. At this time, when we felt we needed help to make decisions, you, Mr. Ferguson, concerned yourself with our problems and in your kind manner helped us to solve our difficulties. The affect this guidance will have on our future lives will certainly be invaluable. We, the seniors; therefore, thank you wholeheartedly for the extreme interest you have shown in our well-being at Rhodes and your advice as to our preparation for our future vocations. For your friendly, wise, and cheerful guidance; your willingness to hear our problems, both in and out of school and to help us solve them; for giving us moral support when we needed it; and for helping us to achive success in all our undertakings; we wish to thank you, Miss Palmer. To you Mr. Gaiser, we wish to express our deepest gratitude and appreciation for your unlimited assistance. While at Rhodes you became both our counsellor and a good friend. In each capacity you have served us well. We, the senior class wish you much success in your new appointment as principal of Brownell Junior High School. We appreciate your fine work as our interim assistant principal during our final semester. The members of our class will always thank you, Mr. Ralls, for the wise counsel and guidance you have given us. We the senior class wish to welcome you, Mr. Blum, as our new assistant principal. We hope that your association with James Ford Rhodes will be a pleasant and interesting one. Our stay at Rhodes has come to an end, and we hope that when we leave, you will remember our class as a class of which you may always be proud. SINCERELY. Some we could open right away, some we never could or wanted to. But they were always there. Seven doors opened into our homerooms, into which we came as faltering newcomers. The sea of unfamiliar faces bewildered us at first, but through the friendly, really earnest guidance of our teachers: Miss Palmer, Mr. Holden, Mr. Ralls, Mr. Hartzell, Miss Cherrington, Miss Manning, Miss Mastrodomenico, and Mr. Sifritt, we soon became regular Rhodians. So many new and big things awaited us! Some of us brought with us our accomplishments from junior high. Virginia Valchar, James Andrews, Irene Sidor, and Robert Melcher found their names in the Rhodes Review in recognition of their winning the Work and Win Award. That same month, the football bug bit many of our boys. Practice every night after school was rugged, but it seemed that school spirit and a competitive spirit outweighed this dreary routine. Vic Dai-uto, Tom Gieroski, Bill Thiess, Jack Woz-ny, Jack Myers, and Ralph Abraham were only a few who scrimmaged on the freshman team. We cheered with all our hearts. Our big Rhodes Rams just couldn’t stop winning. They marched into the Charity Game and brought us glory by trouncing the strong Benedictine Bengals. That night it felt good to have confetti in our hair and the cool wind nipping at our noses. It felt good to shout our loudest. As time passed quickly by, and we grew accustomed to the school and its people, and could find the gym, Mr. Bryan’s office, and the 10th period room, some members of the Class of ’57 were invited to join the different organizations. The leadership of Diane Urbansky became apparent as she became an officer of the Art Club. Anita Gigante took on the responsibility of president of the Junior Y-Teen. We were opening many doors. he opens a door. what lay beyond the great, wide doors of the class of June, 1957 began as freshmen. The first semester many of our classmates became members of the Art Club. Those who were initiated were Carole Kish, Lynn Kachmar, Judy Schill, Virginia Valchar, Lois Wandt, June Salis, Janet Span, Anna Sich, and Elaine Bolek. Music, too, became a growing interest to some. Bob Bendall, Gale Peters, and Paul Rakoczy were selected members of a re-organized All-City Orchestra. With the Christmas time, came snow, decorated homerooms, and our first Christmas Concert. A month later we sat in on our first Pop Concert. The new year brought a new semester, we were no seasoned to high school by four months of algebra homework, B-R Canteen, football rallies, rowdy lunch periods, messy lockers, tenth periods — yes, we were 9A’s. In February a dozen aspiring writers found their way to room 218. But only four got as far the “morgue door”: Judy Schill, Joyce Luther, Irene Sidor, and Anna Sich began their career as school journalists and became full-fledged reporters on the Rhodes Review. Our class of ’57 really represented the school in all sports. Spring meant track— and track meant training, sweating and sprinting in the musty, liniment-smelling underground. Not to be outdone, the girls had some championship material, too. Marcia Fenner took the 50-yard dash at a women’s track meet. Marilyn Truchon and Carolyn Wolf “played the roles” in You Can’t Take It With You. In April Carol Miller was chosen secretary of the rejuvenated French Club. Spring went, and with it — wool skirts, babushkas, and volley ball. As summer vacation approached, Frances Chiabotti and Maryellen Osborn offered to do volunteer work for the city’s Welfare Federation. Then that day in June — another class graduated, and we were promoted. When we would come back in September, we would be sophomores, confident in our CLASS HISTORY — Continued new station. A door of our life had closed. We could look back, but we could never go back — only ahead. Thus, leaving these days behind us. We proud sophomores welcomed five new teachers into the halls of JFR that September of 1954. Replacing Miss Caroline Fredericksen, was Miss Claire Turchetto, and replacing Mrs. Leah Mitchell, was James Reilly. The three other newcomers were Mrs. Doris Karnatz, Mrs. Lolita Mock, and Gerald Rockwood. Former Rhodes biology teacher, Howard Gaiser returned to Rhodes that fall to replace William C. Bryan, as assistant principal. Several of the class members became songsters of the Junior Choir this semester, with Ralph Abraham being elected as president and Jackie Kintzler, treasurer. Carol Clark was selected as accompanist. Lynn Kachmar was the first member of our class to be selected as a member of the Girls Triple Trio. Rhodes Madrigal Singers acquired sopranos Lynn Kachmar and Carole Kish that same semester. Junior Achievement Companies employed fifty-six Rhodians including several members of our sophomore class. Some included were Don Dobbins, Paul Wankowski, Tom Kmetko, Bruce Bennett, Larry Yuda, and Jack Wozny. Jackie Kintzler, Judy Schill, Diane Ur-bansky, and Virginia Valchar were welcomed into the “Romani populi” by the Latin Club. By this time many of the masculine members of the class became known as JV football team mates. Some sports minded boys from the sophomore class who worked down in the musty - dusty underground track were Bruce Budinger, Bob Chochola, Ed Lyons, Bob Russell, Tom Shano, and Tom Kmetko. Destined to be known as leaders and not followers, Carol Clark, Peggy Dumas, Judy Schill, Barbara Smith, and Virginia Valchar were selected for membership into the Girls Leaders Club. Behind the “Good Morning Rhodians— this is your homeroom bulletin” announcer, stood Lynn Kachmar and Judy Schill, patiently waiting to make their announcements over the PA. Lynn and Judy were both taken into Masque and Gavel Club at the same time that they became homeroom announcers, while Loretta An-tennuci became a member of the Drama Club. The Christmas season brought a great amount of happiness and yuletide to each student at Rhodes that year. On December sixteenth our Senior Choir and Orchestra presented the Annual Christmas Concert. As we sat in the balcony and gazed down at the participants, we saw such familiar faces as Dave Leyerle, Bob Russell, Wayne Cowgill, Jack Meyers, and Bob Zechman, who were sitting in the orchestra pit. The Christmas season of 1954 will be forever remembered by the Senior Y-Teeners and their “favorite fellows” who attended their first Christmas Formal on December 18, “Christmas by Candlelight.” Many of the Y-Teens in our second year included Ruth Belica, Elaine Brandt, Diane Burens, F’rances Chiabotti, Eleanor Dittman, Marilyn Hussing, Mary Ann Knapik, Virginia Malm, Virginia Morway, Nancy Robak, Lydia Schwelgin, Elaine Tomanek, and Mary Ann Yantek. With the money raised by collecting tax stamps, Rhodes Student Council purchased an illuminated royal blue bulletin board, which was installed on the first floor to inform the students of coming activities. Virginia Valchar was the first member of our class to be awarded the varsity cheerleader R. At this same time Carol Clark and Barbara Smith joined the JV cheerleading squad. Football season diminished as a thing of the past, while basketball sprouted as a fresh and envigorating sport. With many of our boys like Dan Kalish, A1 Neuman, Jim Demetriu, Dennis Hirsh, Tom Knapp, Matt Sarris, and Bob Rodamer, participating in this sport, several of the class became members of the Boosters Club. Many of our classmates, knowing their destined vocation, became members of the Future Teachers of America Club. Among these were Ann Bass, Anna Mae Burda, Sandra Kuebler, and Jane Broderick. Only one member from our class, Sally CLASS HISTORY — Continued Corrigan, became a Future Nurse of America Club member. “Sprechen Sie Deutsch?” “Ja”, said Carol Klementiss, Anna Sich, Otto Reidl, Ray Lysyk, Tom Revilock, and Horace Reidl as they became German Club members. The Citizen’s Club welcomed their new table-wiper and floor-sweeper members, Ralph Abraham, A1 Neuman, and Virginia Valchar. Doing the chores of the Rhodes library, Rosemarie Gerding, Carol Klementiss, and Diane Konjura became members of the Library Club. Gail Vacha, Carole Kish, Gretchen Lingg, and Jane Bauman “Parleyed Fran-cais” and became members of Rhodes French Club. Jane, excelling in French, was awarded the French medal the following semester. Operating the noon-movies and handling the PA, Audio Visual-Aid members were Bruce Budinger, Don Dobbins, Jim Rist, Bill Steinkamp, and Bill Woolson. Thus, we close the door of the beginning of our sophomore year, the 10B, and begin the 10A semester with a new door to be discovered, opened, and then closed. We first opened the door of this semester to be X-rayed by the Anti-Tuberculosis League of Cleveland, only to find all 274 of the Class of ’57 to be fine and healthy. Attaining membership into the Girls Leaders Club this semester were Jackie Kintzler, Mary Ann Bibel, Janiece Martz, and Pat Ryan. Barbara Garner and Marcia Fenner were given “backpats” for winning the city-wide badminton tournament in the spring of 1955. With track season again sliding into sight, many more of our boys began their trips around the school, block, and community. Several of our track stars were Jim Andrews, Tom Johanni, Mike Evanko, Don Dobbins, Jay Iletherington, Bill Ols-son, Erwin Pfeiffer, John Vourliotis, and Tom Zakel. Encouraging the boys onto victory and reigning over the events that semester was Barbara Garner, who was elected Track Queen of 1955. It seemed to most of us that school days were going by quicker than ever before. Our high school life was nearly half over but we had two more years before us — years that would contain many happy, gratifying experieces and a portion of sadder, maturing experiences. We discovered, when we returned to Rhodes in September 1955, we were at long last considered upperclassmen. Adding to this long awaited moment, we also discovered four new teachers joined the faculty. They were Mr. Tempi in, Miss Lucas, Mr. Harshfield, and Mrs. Morris, who took the place of Mrs. Eterovich. Sandy Heiser, Gretchen Lingg, and Jane Bauman tried their hand at writing for the Review, but after the two semesters they decided it wasn’t for them. The Rams that year tried their hardest to go to the Charity Game but Ignatius was just a little better. The Rams ended the season with eight victories and one defeat. Matt Sarris, Ralph Abraham, Jay Hetherington, Dan Kalish, Jim Demetriu, Joe McCreary, and Tom Gierosky all helped the Rams achieve that record. Helping the team on the bench were managers Bill von Stein and Bob Rodamer. In October Mr. Scott, Rhodes’ printing teacher, athletic director, and coach, left Rhodes after six years to become assistant principal at John Marshall. Mr. Vecchio arrived to take his place. The cross country team of ’55 was the most successful team in Rhodes history. Helping to make the team the success it was were Tom Johanni, Erwin Pfeiffer, Dave Nabinger, Ed Lock, and Bill Olsson. The All-City High School Band and Orchestra was reorganized, and Dave Leyerle and Dan Kalish joined the Band. Under the supervision of the Student Council, American flags were installed in every homeroom, in the library and the office. Along with seven other girls, Mercedes Koval obtained membership in the Girls Leaders Club. The varsity football team unanimously elected Dan Kalish as their captain for the ’56 season. Forty-seven students participated in Junior Achievement during the semester. Among them were Marilyn Jolliffe, Margaret Haas, Allen Kress, Betty Lou Giersz, Janet Pagel, and Peter Ferrante. CLASS HISTORY — Continued Under the supervision of Mr. Merriman, the Science Club was organized at Rhodes. Some of its first members were Bruce Budinger, Carl Kubala, Ed Lock, Bob Melcher, Larry Prahst, Horace Reidl, Jim Rist, Bob Russel, Linde Seil, Diane Urban-sky, and Bill Woolson. To the surprise and disappointment of many, Miss Ruth Hier, dean of girls at Rhodes for twenty-four years, took a leave of absence. Succeeding Miss Hier was Miss Helen E. Palmer, Latin teacher, and one of the girls homeroom teachers. As an anti-climax to our 11B semester, Joan Thomas, was elected vice-president of Senior Y-Teen, and in the 12B, she became president. Assisting Joan on the cabinet were Jane Bauman, Gretchen Lingg, and Sonya Sidorec. It was also announced at this time, that the Citizens Club selected some of our group to become “citizens.” They were Jim Demetriu, Carole Kish, Bill Pullar, and Judy Schill. Thus we closed the door in January, 1956 upon another semester at James Ford Rhodes, leaving behind all the wonderful, happy and sad moments. As we closed the door, however, our thoughts were not in the past but in the future. Next semester we would have our first class election, our first informal, and our first picnic. Starting our 11A semester off with a clean slate, one of the homerooms found themselves with a new homeroom teacher, Mrs. Wanda Ayres. Some new members of Senior Choir were Mary Ann Bibel, Madge Radke, Langdon Bell, Dan Kalish, Dave Nabinger, and Ricardo Supinski. Initiated at Gloria Dei Church into the Girls Glee Club were Carol Miller, Judy Schill, Marilyn Truchon, Cathy Sestito, and Joan Weich. The privilege of being our first class officers went to Jim Andrews, president; A1 Neuman, vice-president; Maryellen Osborn, secretary; and Mike Evanko, treasurer. Jane Hoose and her social committee created “Mardi Gras”, a wonderful atmosphere for our informal which was held in the Rhodes ballroom on April 18. Decked out in their green bloomers and middies, the faculty women challenged the champion volley ball team, the Sampsons, to a volleyball contest. The team was captained by Gail Vacha and consisted of Marcia Fenner, Judy Schill, Lynn Kachmar, Mary Ann Bibel, Irene Sidor, and Gretchen Lingg. Can you guess who won??? Barbara Smith and Tom Kmetko were selected from several students who tried out for our annual Community Fund speakers. Their speeches were presented to the student body the following October. Mr. Leslie Tanko, social studies teacher and senior advisor for thirty-six years passed away on March 3, 1956. Count Berezowski’s chateau in Livonia was the scene of Herberts’ “Fortune Teller” presented by the Senior Choir in March. Soloists were “Fresco” Sahley, “Wanda” Kachmar, “Irma” Kish, and “Ma” Palumbo. Playing the role of Hussars were John Vourliotis and Ralph Abraham. At this time our 11A class was invited to attend a ceremony in the auditorium where we saw classmates Bruce Budinger, Otto Reidl, Virginia Valchar, Gail Vacha, Carole Kish, Carol Clark, Irene Sidor, Anna Sich, and Diane Urbansky formally inducted into the National Honor Society. Bigger and better banners than ever before seen at Rhodes were displayed during the Student Council political campaign. Jim Andrews was elected president, and Virginia Valchar, vice-president. Other candidates were Joe McCreary, Paul Rakoczy, and Bruce Budinger. “Just Picknicking in the Rain” was the theme of our junior picnic held at Big Creek Reservation on May 9. As we juniors saw the senior class preparing for graduation, we put ourselves in their place, for next year it would be us. Now only one year was left. One more year until we would open the door to the world. We would graduate! At first it seemed too soon — it would be hard to leave dear old JFR and all of the memories held within its walls. But all doors must close . . . We began our 12B semester with our class elections which resulted with A1 CLASS HISTORY — Continued Neuman, president; Norm Sahley, vice-president; Maryellen Osborn, secretary; Mike Evanko, treasurer; and Barbara Smith, social chairman. Dan Kalish and his fellow team-mates fought hard, but failed to lead our football team to victory. On October 19, some 198 of us climbed, piled, and were shoved into various modes of transportation and made our way to Snow Road Park for our 12B picnic. October 31 brought tricks and treats to four members of our class who were “informally” inducted into the Girls Leaders Club. The “Halloweeners” were Irene Sidor, Lynn Kachmar, Marcia Fenner, and Gretchen Lingg. After seven semesters of galley reading, taking copy to the printer, and cleaning out the “morgue”, Joyce Luther, Judy Schill, Irene Sidor, and Anna Sich were appointed as co-editors of the ever-popular Rhodes Review. “Snowflake Serenade” set the scene for our waltzing classmates as they spent the afternoon at our 12B Informal. It was also in our 12B semester that we were introduced to our favorite “Calcium” Clyde Henderson and to the notorious chem labs. Who said sulphur doesn’t smell like rotten eggs???? This semester we viewed our second NHS induction ceremony. Ten of our class thrilled to hear their names called. Margaret Haas, Sandra Heiser, Barbara Jordan, Lynn Kachmar, Jackie Kintzler, Tom Kmetko, Bob Melcher, Sue Palumbo, Linde Seil, and Barbara Smith brought our class membership in the NHS up to 19. All too soon came the Christmas season of 1956 with ever so many things to remind us of the coming Yule. Our thanks go to Jim Andrews for selecting one of the finest Christmas trees to ever be displayed at JFR. One member of our class, Bill von Stein, really tried to build up school spirit by reorganizing the Boosters Club. On December 20 our Choir and Glee Club members sang in their last Christmas performance at Rhodes High. And on December 22, many senior girls attended their last Y-Teen Christmas Formal with their “fellows”. “Snow Ball” was indeed a fine way to spend our last Christmas at Rhodes, and it was indeed a night to remember. For this, our thanks go to Gail Vacha, Y-Teen Social Chairman and her committee for creating that night of splendor. The new year, our year of 1957, brought us back to Rhodes with only one thought in mind—this would be our last semester. A1 Neuman was re-elected to serve our class as president; Ed Lock, vice-president; Mike Evanko, treasurer; Maryellen Osborn, secretary; Diane Urbansky, social chairman; and Anna Sich, yearbook editor. Not only would this semester be important to our 12A class but it would climax the twenty-fifth anniversary for James Ford Rhodes High School. “Shangri-la” with its decorations of black, gold, and red was the scene of the last informal attended by our class. We danced to the music of the Del-Raes on the eve of April 6. What fun!! Oh what a night! Our class again had the opportunity to participate in another operetta—this one “Masquerade in Vienna”. Even though we were “the” upperclassmen, senioritis could not prevent us from donning our sweatshirts and levis for the third and final class outing. It was held at Big Creek Reservation on May 15. Class Day, our Prom, and Commencement were still ahead of us. Commencement would bring to a close our four years at Rhodes—four years that transcinded a period of growing up, giving and taking, and of learning—at least a little. Many doors have been closed by us—but the biggest door remains to be opened— the door to the future. CLASS PROPHECY Soaring through the Pearly Gates, we begin our descent downward. Gradually the air becomes warmer and the reddish hue of the atmosphere casts a rosy glow upon our wings. We four angels, representatives of the NHS (National Heaven Society), seeking new inductees, are approaching our destination, Hotspot—population 189. Strange as it may seem, this town is inhabited by the entire June class of ’57. Our investigation shows that they were destined to Hotspot because of their over-celebration of the twenty-fifth anniversary of James Ford Rhodes High School. This was a class of “failures”! To get a candid glimpse of the town, we grab a bus of which RALPH ABRAHAM is driver. Glancing to the rear of the bus, our eyes catch three shiny domes. The familiar features of LARRY YUDA, VIC DAIUTO, and JIM DEMETRIU take form. Sitting in front of them are SONYA SI-DOREC and MARGE HAAS, who are on their way to Lane Bryant’s, owned by JACK WOZNY, where they model old ladies’ half sizes. When the bus pulls over to the curb, we recognize some of the employees of the ERWIN PFEIFFER Bottling Company as they board. Among them are bottle cappers DAVE POLLACK and SANDRA KUEBLER; label lickers, LARRY GRAY, and ELEANOR DITTMAN; label stickers, RON BOETTCHER and JEANETTE MAN-FREDA; and last, but not least, TOM REVILOCK, chief taster. Peeling away from the curb, we find ourselves dragging CARL “TEX” KU-BALA, who surges ahead on his galloping steed, Warsaw. Stopping at the next intersection, we see DON VESELENAK, representative of the law, reprimanding LINDE SEIL and RALPH BOECKLE for jay walking. Rushing in front of the Firedome Hell-Cat of BRUCE BUDINGER, JIM RIST, who is working for his Dirty Bird badge in scouting, gallantly sweeps ANNAMAE BURDA from the path of the oncoming car. Tired and hungry, we stop for lunch at the Hoo Flung Goo Chinese Restaurant, which is owned by LINDA CORENO and PETER FERRANTE. Hostess, IRENE LE-ZAN, guides us to our tables where SALLY CORRIGAN takes our order. While awaiting our meal, which is being prepared by cooks HELEN HINZ and TONY HABERCORN, we watch the floor show. First on the program is the hot rendition of “Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea” sung by MARY ANN BIBEL and ALLEN KRESS. SPIKE RODAMER single-handedly bounces BOB SHARP, BILL THEISS, and DENNIS HIRSCH for pestering the chorus line of Flamettes — MARY ANN KNAPIK, ALAN BURKE, BARBARA JORDAN, ROSEMARIE GERDING, AUDREY ROHDE, BABE ZYCHOWSKI, and BILL DEISNER. Leaving the restaurant, we cross the street and enter the Hotspot Anti-Trust Company, owned and operated by PETE and PAULETTE PULLAR. Paulette?? We head for the teller’s cage where RUTH BELICA cashes our travelers checks. Well, what do you know? There’s HORACE REIDL manning the ink wells, and there’s PAUL ROKOCZY, sixteenth assistant vice-president, stabbing at small bits of paper with his pitchwork. As we proceed down Devil’s Drive, we approach Pick 'N Filch Grocery Store which is owned by TOM JOHANNI. Surveying the advertisements being taped to the window by MIKE TRIBOLET and DENNIS HILDEBRANDT, we detect the artistic touch of SANDY HEISER’S pen. Inside we see JUDY SCHILL, head cashier, checking out the goods of BILL WOOLSON and JOYCE LUTHER WOOL-SON. In the rear of the store we see stock-boys, TOM SHANO, RON HOLLIS, and DON TEMPLE tossing deviled eggs at each other. Turning away from the window, we head for the center of town where the City Hall is located. On our way we encounter ED LOCK, sidewalk photographer, still taking candid shots of his classmates. Our attention is attracted by the loud cries of newsgirl, ELAINE BOLEK, from whom we buy a copy of the Daily Dirt. VIRGINIA MALM is her quick-change maker. Preceding us up the stairs into the Hall are council members PEGGY DUMAS, FLORENCE HUBBARD, BETTY GIERSZ, CLASS PROPHECY — Continued GERALD SOCHA, and STEFANIE COLOBIANCHI to complain about the clean jokes told by JIM McELHINEY during the last meeting. We head directly for the information booth where DIANE URBANSKY is telling JIM ANDREWS where to go. We then inquire as to the whereabouts of the mayor, ALAN NEUMAN. Diane’s reply is that he is “out to lunch”. Ahem. But we leave a message with his secretary, TOM KMETKO. Leaving our request for a list of the best of the worst for the NHS, we depart and head for the Satan Arms Hotel where WAYNE COWGILL and BOB ZECHMAN are doormen. Registering at the desk, BERNIE HROMCO, clerk, signs us in and rings for the “BELL” boys—LANGDON and LEYTON, who take our bags. On the elevator we ask operator MADGE RAD-KE to direct us to room 10-4. As we enter the room, maids DIANE BURENS and MARALYN HUSSING depart with dirty towels. Sitting down to read the Daily Dirt, we notice that ANNA SICH is editor. Glancing at the headlines, we see that OTTO REIDL has been voted “Devil of the Month”, just barely beating CAROLINE REINKING. Atta boy, Otts! The second page features an advertisement for Helarella, a reducing salon, which is owned by NICK EMIGHOLZ and operated by MARCIA FENNER. On the sports page, we see a picture of the newly elected Lava Queen, BARBARA GARNER. Reading further, we see that JACKIE KINTZ-LER has won another championship in tennis—she wasn’t even wearing her ruflly panties. Tsk. Tsk. A great deal of credit, though, should be given to her coach, RICARDO SUPINSKI. We turn on the TV station, W-A-G-O-N, and catch the beginning of the very cultural program ON-THE-BUS. The emcees, NORM SAHLEY and MARILYN TRU-CHON are introducing the duet of BOB MELCHER on the organ and MATT SAR-RIS on the bongo drums. They will give their interpretation of “Beethoven’s Fifth”—symphony, that is. VIRGINIA KUS and JANIECE MARTZ are next with “Red, Red, Robin”. The Hotspot Trot follows which includes LYDIA SCHWEL-GIN, JANET SPAN, THERESA NOVOTNY, and CAROLYN WOLF accompanied by GALE PETERS on her trumpet and BOB BENDALL on the cello. Our TV program is interrupted by loud noises. Curious to see what the racket is, we go downstairs and enter the Pinochle Parlor of GRETCHEN LINGG, in which BARBARA SMITH is head dealer and MERCEDES KOVAL is cigarette girl. BOB ReMALIA passes out matches. Some of the big rowdies include GERALD JESONOSKY, FRED HEYM, MARTIN POLACEK and REGGIE VAN TUYL, the son of a gun manufacturer. At this stage of the game it looks as if no one will be qualified as an inductee to NHS. After observing the games for only a few minutes, we find ourselves involved in a raid by the police. The police, thinking we’re part of the gambling, usher us into the paddy wagon where we find ourselves in the company of other notorious characters such as LARRY “The Toot” PRAHST, LOIS “The Lip” WANDT, DOL-LY Knuckles” BROSIUS, and TOM “Sam” ZAKEL. Entering the police station, we are interrogated by police chief, CAROLE KISH. Following the questioning, we are escorted by FRANCES CHIABOTTI, warden, to our cell which is also occupied by ADA NUGENT for sober driving, IRENE SI-DOR for being too rowdy, RAY LYSYK for being a conservative dresser, and BOB CHOCHOLA for embezzlement. After spending the night in the “jug”, HERBERT GAISER, lawyer, volunteers his services and bails us out. Emerging into the early morning sunlight, we are greeted by JAY HETHER-INGTON standing on the corner frantically clapping his hands and screaming at the top of his lungs, “Pencils! Have a pencil! Two for 5 .” On the next corner we are approached by SUE PALUMBO, who is still trying to push her stale brownies. As we continue on our way, we see the local bookmobile with its head driver, JACK MYERS. Taking a peek inside, we see KAREN OTTO and GAIL VACHA censoring the best-sellers, “The Russian Tragedy by LYNN KACHMAR, “The Revenge of the Tiger” by MIKE EVANKO, and “Call of the Wild” by JANE BRODERICK. Desiring to know more about the main industry of hell, we tour the JOHN VOUR- CLASS PROPHECY — Continued LIOTIS-BILL von STEIN Pitchfork Factory. Examining the assembly line, we see designer JUNE SALIS, pattern maker VIRGINIA MORWAY, forgers JOE BARTKIEWICZ and LARRY KRAW-CZEWICZ, sharpeners LEO CANALES and NANCY KEREKES, and the well-known painters ED LYONS and JOAN THOMAS. At the end of our tour we see THERESA McLAUGIILIN testing the finished product on PHIL BOEHM’S . . . Ahem! Hearing shrieks other than those coming from the testing room, we dash outside just in time to see the Hotspot firemen BOB ASMONDY, GARY HORNAK, CAROL MILLER, and driver, PAT RYAN, who are trying to keep CAROL CLARK’S and DAN KALISH’S home fires burning. Tired with our morning’s activities, we stop in at JOE KRZEMINSKI’S drug store, Heladorn’s, for refreshments. JOANNE RAVIA, who is now Mrs. Hela-dorn, asks the noisy group of ELEANOR SLYS, PAT NEMES, NANCY WELSH, ELAINE TOMANEK, and BILL DICKSON to be quiet because KEN STRONG is making prescriptions in the back room. By the way, Heladorn's is known all over for the photographs developed by VIRGINIA VALCHAR and BILL STEIN-KAMP. They work so well together in the darkroom. Thoroughly refreshed, we decide to spend the afternoon at the Helstinky Unsportsmanlike Show. At the ticket window, MARIE HURLBUT sells us our tickets, and usherette, MARIE HAZIN-AKI, shows us to our seats. The first to catch our eye is the only all-woman car races in existence. Competing in them are ANITA GIGANTE, ANN CHANDLER, BARBARA PARKER, and last year's champion, JANE BAUMAN. Sitting down front in the box seats is the head of the boxing commission, TOM KNAPP, with his body guard, MENELAOS KRANIAS. In one corner of the stadium is DON DOBBINS bull fighting. It looks like the fight is getting out of hand, and the only thing left to do is for sharpshooter, KATHY SESTITO, to shoot the bull. In another corner of the stadium, the sixty-seventh day of the hundred-day tandem bike race is in progress. BILL OLSSON and JOAN WEICH are neck and neck with DAVE LEYERLE and ANN BASS for the lead. Bringing up the rear is MARILYN CRAIG and PAUL WANKOWSKI, that is. We are interrupted by the loud cries of JOE McCREARY, who is selling H.B.’s—what else but hot barbecues. By sticking one under the noses of spectator BOB RUSSELL, it nearly scares the health out of him. In the center ring is the championship wrestling match between BRUCE BENNETT and LINARDS BERZINS, refereed by MARYELLEN OSBORN. Since it’s free-style, Bruce brings his bottle of H2SQ4, which he hopes will eat 'em up. Yum! Yum! Doing! Doing! Doing! The round is ended. In the next ring is the championship women’s tag team match featuring LORETTA ANTENUCCI and JANET PAGEL against ELAINE BRANDT and NANCY ROBAK. The referees are RALPH GREGORY and JERRY DANIELSKI, who warn them that toe biting and eyelash pulling are against the rules. Disgusted with the poor sportsmanship being displayed, we head back to the hotel to see if the mayor has sent his list of eligible NHS inductees yet. Oh look! There goes the Female Fiends Society. Among them is JUDY KNAPP, who is running for Commissioner of Wealth and Helfare. They must be on their way to a campaign meeting now. JUDY PERRY and ARLENE YANUS are campaign skywriters; GERALDINE PAMER and STELLA KOSTKA sing campaign ditties over the radio; JOANNE PILGER and CAROL KLEMENTISS throw mimeographed handbills from airplanes; MARILYN JOLLIFFE and MARY ANN YANTEK make the most of their job which is kissing all the male babes. Babes???? DIANE KONJURA steals appropriations for the committee. Arriving at the hotel, we’re just in time to see speedy DAVE NABINGER whiz in with the mayor’s list of possible NHS members. Anxiously we rip open the envelope to examine the mayor’s reply. To our dismay, the reply of the mayor states that no citizen of Hotspot is qualified for the honor of becoming a member of the National Heaven Society. Disappointed with the results of our mission, we prepare to return to heaven. As we depart, our only advice to the class of ’57 is, “Hang in there!” CLASS WILL We, the senior class of James Ford Rhodes High School, one thousand nine hundred and fifty-seven, A.D., being of sound and disposing mind and memory, do hereby make, publish, and declare this to be our last will and testament. Having a grand desire to give our last few drops of blood for our dear old alma mater, we donate the product of our last exsanguination, thusly: Pint I To Mr. Hoffman, we leave all the rubbish, cladtrap, and balderdash, we never had a chance to use. To Mr. Mathews we leave our sincere hope that he will, in the future, allow the senior classes to spend at least $3.02 for a yearbook. To Miss Cherrington, we bequeath a large library of taped English plays, to be played at extra loud volume, at her discretion. To Mr. Folkman, we leave a witty new Rhodes Review staff plus four veteran editors. To Mr. Henderson, we give all our lab-made nitro-benzene, for his mighty Ford. To Mr. Holden goes the “Salesman of the Year” award. To Mr. Schmidt, we leave the latest album out: “Sibelius Swings With Calypso”. To Mr. Ralls, we leave eleven empty football uniforms that were once used by Miami U., in the hopes that they will soon be filled by future Rhodes athletes. To Mr. Rockwood, we leave a set of Lincoln Logs to be used in future Trig, classes, and a double-bladed hatchet, to cut them down to size. To Mr. Jacobs, we leave the question: “How long is day?”, and one gross of alumnae to help figure out the time in Alice Springs, Australia. To Miss Sancetta, we leave a volume of history books, in all of which, Julius Cea-sar dies a natural death. To Mr. Forster, we leave an “up agin the wall”, wall. Pint II The chemistry II classes leave their share of Valence Bonds to the ester bunny. To the incoming freshman, we leave all our unused gym pencils, and a hall guide, showing all exits, and the time it takes to get to anyone, from any point in the school. To the remaining stage-craft crew goes our sky-hook, and our ladder hangers. To the future football teams of J.F.R., we leave our memories of the past games and our hope to see another Charity Game winner. Pint III To all our wonderful homeroom teachers, we leave a vote of thanks, for the four years of guidance, and teaching they suffered through to bring us to this commencement of our lives. To Mr. Mathews and the faculty, we leave our respect, gratitude, and good wishes for their constant attempt to educate us, despite ourselves. James Ford Rhodes, we leave sadly, but hopefully.
