We stand united In thy purpose true Loyal and faithful To the white and blue. From the very beginning when you welcomed us as confused freshmen until the last few inspiring moments, we will always remember you. Miss Millard and Mr. Jacob, as a real part of our class. Instead of supervising our activities you have joined in them, proving that you are sincerely one of us. Because you were always so willing to help solve our problems, both in and out of school, we thank you. Miss Millard. We thank you, Mr. Jacob, for doing many gratefully appreciated things for us, such as not giving us homework on the nights of special class activities. To you both we dedicate our yearbook. 3 NEIL D. MATHEWS To Members of the Class of January, 1956: We hope that these past few years at Rhodes High School have helped in some degree to prepare each of you to take your place as an effective citizen of this great nation of ours. We hope that your work here has improved your capacity to do your own thinking and that, as a result of your thinking, you constantly will be alert to the responsibilities and duties of citizenship. Thus will you join the ever-growing number of Rhodes graduates of whom both your school and your community are justifiably proud. Best wishes to each of you. NEIL D. MATHEWS. Principal P.«e4 MR. GAISER MR. FERGUSON We wish to express our thanks to you, our advisors. Thank you. Miss Hier, for helping us over the trying times. You always found a solution to our problems. Your willingness to help was appreciated. Mr. Gaiser, thank you for understanding us. You proved the things we did could be understood. The advice and information you have given us about our aims, Mr. Ferguson, will stay with us always. We hope that we have done as much for Rhodes as you have done for us. To Miss Millard we leave Frieda to add to her collection of elephants. To Mr. Sifritt we surrender all our thrill pills. To Mr. Tanko we present an army cot so he may sleep at Rhodes and thus keep Rhodians all hours of the night. We leave Stanley . . . TOO BAD!!! THE JURY DECIDES A1 Richards leaves a bronze replica of his beautiful legs to Hawkeye Henderson. The class departs wondering whether Carole Gladrow's dog wears cashmere. Doug Naumann leaves everyone with broken eardrums and confetti in his hair. To up and coming Rhodian glamour girls Loreene leaves her secrets of making short hair long . . . quick!!! To the 12B girls we leave the map to the exchange cabin from the Rhoda raiders. We leave the good times at Betty Ann's cottage. The Metas leave you with this thought . . . Keep it legal! Tears and sympathy are left to the underclassmen who are without the use of Toni Crisafi's cabaret. Brawls and Big Boys go to the junior varsity . . . compliments of Manners. The 12A explorers leave their torches from the midnight hike to future Indian scouts. The 12A girls leave their successful pizza recipe to the Foreign Affairs Club. After much ponderous deliberation, the jury re-enters and the foreman reads the verdict . . . NOT GUILTY!!! P «r33 Eight semesters ago our class started to fit another piece into the great puzzle of life. After much fun and work, we have attached it to the puzzle. Looking back on the past four years we all have many happy memories. January 1952 As our class saw the halls of Rhodes for the first time, KATHY THIESS also saw America for the first time. She had come to America only ten weeks before entering Rhodes. As a 9B, ROBERT BENISEK represented his homeroom in Student Council. March 1952 As we witnessed our first National Honor Society induction we were impressed at the deep significance of its goal. Many would try to reach this goal and as the years went by many succeeded. April 1952 As 9B's, we witnessed the only student faculty day in the history of Rhodes High. The teachers outclassed the students in almost every sport. Stars were our own Miss Millard, Miss Adams, Mr. Hoffman, and Mr. Jacob. September 1952 In the 9A. STELLA RIVELLINO was made a member of the Student Council Publicity Committee. At this time. BETTE NOTTKE began office work. She has worked in the main office three semesters. One of her duties was to deliver Miss Hier and Mr. Bryan's personal letters to choice students. November 1952 DOROTHY WILCZYNSKI playing Masquerade Party guessed the identity of four masked Rhodians one of whom was ARLENE BUDKO. December 1952 While studying diligently on a December day we heard the beautiful carols of the Senior Choir. Those who were in the ninth grade chorus, hoped that they would some day be members of this inspiring organization. January 1953 Among those who became members of the Boys' Leaders Club in the 10B were RODNEY ROBERTS and JIM WHITE. February 1953 As a 10B JOAN BRADLEY was one of the first members of our class to hold an office in a clubâtreasurer of the Library Club. March 1953 Demonstrating her artistic ability, JACKIE CREGO made posters in sign writing class advertising the operetta, ''A Waltz Dream.â April 1953 At the spring concert, we found that another one of our class had vocal talent. CAROLE GLADROW was one of a trio which sang with the Senior Choir. May 1953 Chosen to represent our class in the annual Posture Queen Contest sponsored by the Girls' Leaders Club were SANDRA RUNGE of homeroom 202, and PAT GREEN of 312. September 1953 Because of their interest in tennis, LOR-EENE BILY, SHARON RODER and BETTY HRIVNAK participated in the annual Flora Stone Mather Tennis Tournament. At this same time, other members of the class showed their athletic interest when they became members of the Junior Varsity Football Squad. They were GENE BOGUSH, TOM CHAMPION. CARL PHILLIPS. DAVE LEETY. DOUG NAUMANN. BILL KURKA, STEVE TELISCHAK, FRED BEECH. JERRY CHAJKOWSKI. JOE HAD ACER. DAVE NEALE and RALPH VRANA. The German Club had many enjoyable activities in store for its recently initiated member. ROSEMARY EHRINGER. After being on the Rhodes Review staff since a 9A. We questioned everyone at the prom. No one admitted a thing. The case was closed for lack of evidence. Ten years later, the new police chief. Bill DuHy. reopened the case. We spent weeks trying to dig up at least one person who was in that class on the famous night, ten years ago. Finally, on the afternoon of June 30. 1966, we located one girl. A lead at last! It was Bev Pristas who is now working in an information booth at Bellevue. She said she didn't know any thing about Slush Talkâ, but gave us a list of names, addresses, and other information on all the people that were in her class. As we looked over the list of names and occupational data, we found that there were two more employees here connected with the case: Jerry Fill and Ken Kle-mentis, orderlies. They showed us to the room of one of the inmatesâ: Linda Zika. driven to Bellevue in her senior year. Talking to her was hopeless! Our only alternative was to visit everyone on the list. July 1, 7:16 A.M. Next stopâVassar, the famous girlsâ college. Leslie Jabb is now the dean. Jim Stuckey is the physical ed. teacher here, and Chuck Ponall is the tennis coach. We also talked to the girls who are attending this college: Janet Bass, Joan Bebo. Marge DeMattia, Nancy Ensley, Ruth Frydl, Anita Kazol. Laveme Kozer. Sonia Manchek, Dorothy Manfreda, Kathy McLaughlin, Virginia Nuhsler. Diana Ross. Joan Schiener. and Na-dene Reimer. We drew another blank, and went on with the list. July 2, 7:23 A.M. Another day, another collegeâHarvard, where we looked up Donna Benson, coach on their rowing team. She told us The Rotten 7â finally made good: Dave Hazlett is now a famous lecturer on any and every subject. Larry Schade. a chauffeur driving his babyâ for a sweet old lady with a weak heart. Jim Thomas, a âB.T.O. specializing in getting anybody a deal. Ron Szeremeta. caterer for all types of celebrations and parties, especially stag partiesâ. Skipâ Melzer, owner of a plush vacation resort in Vermillion on the Lake. Karl Eimer. Lover of Nature, runs a frog nur ?erv. (His side specialty is salamanders.) Since these boys sounded so clean, we didn't even bother questioning them. Our case was getting nowhere fast. Then, exactly one week after that first lead, at 9:57 A.M. on July 7, we got a phone call from Sergeant Ron Elchesen of the downtown police. He said he was holding some suspects in the tank for us to question. My partner and I lost no time in getting there. The suspects turned out to be: John Balog, Chester Bar, George Bauer, David Czajka, Alan De-Werth. Charles Glass. Bill Herold. Norman Petkac, James Englehart, James Janke, Laddie Krivos. and Dennis Schwark. Our questioning ended at 10:07 A.M. Resultânothing. 10:14, the same morning, we received another call. This time it was from Detective Jimmy Koberling. Two more suspects. One was Elliott Goldstein, arrested for loitering on a street comer. As it happened, he was only collecting pennies for radio-free Israel. The other was Bob Beech, a tall suspicious looking man. arrested on a charge of counterfeiting. Neither could help us. 11:39 A.M. Next on the list was Dick Brown's Dime-a-Danceâ House. We questioned the owner, but he told us to talk to the girls in his employ. The ticket seller was Jackie Cemy. The others were: Kathy An-shutz, Mary Avoy. Marilyn Berner, Joanne Budziak, Mary Ann Csontos, Betty Doeringer. Lynne Faust. Nancy Henninger. Marilyn Meal. Carole Peters. Lenore Robertson. Mary Ann Grzejka. Lillian Plocica, and Helen Tlu-cak. The girls didn't know anything, so we waited for the place to open and the customers to come in. 7 P.M. Two Marines came in clutching their Good Conduct Medals. They were: Mike Kinkopf and Larry Brakowiecki. Both quite innocent. 7:03 P.M. As the regular customers started coming in, we questioned them one by one: John Grafton. Ralph Buri-anek, Carl Henninger. William Ott, Carl Koehn, and Dick Lukash. Another dead end. 7:52 P.M. As long as we were in this part of the neighborhood, we stopped in a nearby theater where a few of the class were billed. Diane Scholl. Phyllis Kubit. and Gail Koons, the top three actresses of the year, were on stage so we couldn't talk to them. But we managed to question Ned Hotshot Henry, who had the knife-throwing act during intermission. He was amusing, but no help to the case. 8:15 P.M. Knocked off for something to eat. My partner and I looked over the list of people we were planning to cover the next day. and immediately eliminated Brian McHugh because he is now in Italy, rehabilitating the youth. However, the others were: Barb Luckyâ V a c h u s k aâsells lucky charms at C.Y.O. basketball games in Detroit. Diane Aboidâdealer in Persian rugs. Shelby Bilesâbird-caller in West Virginia. Pat Brooks and Madge SafarzâNuns in a local convent. Frances Coulter and Julaine Rodig -charter members of The Red Head Club . Marge Dregerâsells tomatoes on the corner of Biddulph and Pearl. Don Reutenerâfamous and brilliant doctor (at Santa Anita). Beverly Krueger and Betty Kellerâblacksmiths. Ed Kinney and Tom Gothroâpartners in a Body Shop. Patricia Leightâworks at Illuminating Co. Sharon Novakârides in cross-country bike races. Mildred Malikâwrites 'Adviceâ column in The News. Marlene Markoâonce a socialite, now the mother of triplets (Terra. Varga, and Sigma) supporting them by working as Mr. Van's upstairs maid. Rich Gaspar -route man for the Press. Jim Hazardâpublicity agent for Berea. Pat and Sandy Kavelecâstill arguing about which twin has the Toni. Barbara Kodyshâbeautician, expert with hair rinses. JoAnn Kolyâruns a voice culture school. Jean Jenkinsâsings Oklahoma every Sunday in Church Choir. Judy Feeleyâinvented an amazing new freckle remover. Joan Hoyerâcatches fish for a living in Huron. Gerald Wellet and Robert Pankuchâcarry-outs at Fishers. July 8. 9:13 A.M. After a brief discussion, my partner and I agreed that these names we looked over the previous night, were clear of any suspicion. 9:28 A.M. The next name on the list lead us to Muscle Beach, where Jerry Clapp, the life-guard, was arguing with Alan Schuerger. Since these boys were too busy to be interrupted. we walked along the beach until we came to someone doing algebra problems in the sand. It was Frank Soldat. He pointed out a young man who might know something about our case. This turned out to be Rich Caruso, who was trying to get a sun tan. He couldn't remember a thing about the night of the prom, so we talked to a young couple building pyramids in the sand: Vi Kovacs and Joe Kaczmarek. They were too busy to be bothered also. My partner and I then questioned Jim Steinhoff. who was building sand houses. He couldn't tell us anything we didn't know already, but suggested we talk to the wolf on the beach. Bob Cieslak. Unfortunately. he wasn't found. Our next step was to round up all the bathing beauties for questioning. They were: LaVerne Ebosh. Janice Giorgione. Judy Goldenbogen. Joyce Guilford. Norita Hadden. Joyce Hess, Kathy Hotchkiss. Esther Nickel, Carol Pinard. Jan Reinhart. Rebecca Reta. Barb Sliz. Barb Tryda, Dolores Vesely. and Sharlene Williams. We still hadn't turned up another lead. 12:00 noon found us at Sportsman's Park where Sally McMullen. Bill Riemor. Tom Miller. John Vranic. and Henry Heuser were driving in the races. Bill Halen was selling souvenirs and Bob Lafeld was found selling programs. After talking to them, my partner and I came up with a result of nothing once more. 12:31 P.M. Over a cup of coffee, we looked at the list again, and found a large part of the class had ended up at Barb Torbak's Home for Wayward Boys. They were: Tom Black, Jim Fabris. Ken Lane. Fred Lower, Jim Mariin. Bob McLaughlin. Tom Nielson. Lester Rossoll, Dan Sadowsky. Dick Safran. Paul Scharschmidt. Dave Schroeder. Ray Sekerak. Dick Simpson, and Don Zielinski. Barb was doing a good job with these boys by giving them piano lessons. They were all clear. Another large group of the class was in a Salvation Army Band: Jim and Bill Setny, Yolanda Abranyi. Pete Blackford. Arlene and Audrey Bormann. Marge Dacek, Diane Dzurik. Marlene Keltner. Allan Okeson. Joe Popchak. Joe Schreiber. and they had a vocalist with them named Marlene Metro. Five had jobs with Dupont, in their labs, trying to get reactions: Clarence Cemik, Sherman Clevenger. Nestor Clough. Alan Fas-singer. and Roger Wicker. The rest of the class worked in Jim Dick's Gambling Casino in LasVegas. Marian Hosmer was the hostess; Christine Bargiel. the cigarette girl; Pat Rice, a card deck marker; Becky Sahley. a bookey; Mary Ellen Vey, bar maid; Chad Wachs. bouncer; John Gerd-ing, regular customer; and these girls were in the floor show: Betty Fien. Carol Fogl. Nadine Kail. Edna Klaohn, Joy Marshall. Cor-inne Mueller, Joyce Pindroh, Mary Lou Porter, Shirloy Schmidt, Gay Shaffer, Pat Sliwa, Joyce Speiser. Genevieve Szuba. Gay Thatcher, Maxine Ushek. Alberta Vathke. Barb Vourliotou, Barb Weber, and Stephanie Za-jac. Somehow my partner and I knew it was hopeless to question all these people. It looked like we lost the case. But wait! We overlooked one name. It was Nancy Noble. The only information we had on her was that rhe was attending Ohio University. 1:13 P.M. Ii wasn't too late to drive down there. We arrived at 6:57 P.M. It didn't take long to locate Nancy. After an hour of interrogation. she broke down and admitted she started Slush Talk ten years ago at J.F.R. However, rhe now had a good job as head caddy on O.U.'s golf course and promised us she was going straight. She would never again utter another word in Slush . We be'i-ved Nancy and closed the case at 8 P.M. on July 8. 1966. Now that this bombastic episode is finished. my partner and I are retiring horn the police force, and taking up permanent residence at Bellevue. Signed. Betty Lou Sasala and PartnerâDick Kestner The case you have just read is lictional. Any similarity to persons living or dead, is purely intentional. This has been a Mark 56 production. Page 61 CLASS WILL We. the seniors of '56. being of sound mind and body and unsound financial status, do hereby proclaim an auction to be held on this day, for the purpose of raising funds to purchase a 25 year supply of Vigoro for our convalescent class tree. The remainder of the profits will be used to erect a twelve foot bronze plated statue to the memory of the very brilliant tree surgeon, Dr. Melvin Kosnowski, who, only last year, saved our delicate sapling from the treacherous Transylvanian Elm Weevil. Stepping up to the platform is Dapper Duke Thomas, our boisterous barker. D.D.T. who has charge of the whole affair, will bring up the donated items, one by one, until we reach our goal. The first teacher to donate to our sale is Mr. Henderson who sacrificed his set of colored tinker-toys to the highest bidder. Diane Scholl. Mrs. Morris' five year supply of stale coffee goes to the âRotten Seven , (for those mornings after), in trade for 973 unlabeled copper-colored tin cans, which will be melted down for the statue. Sold to Donna Benson for SI.94 are Mr. Van Nortwick's red striped pajamas, size 42 âextra long. Mr. McCullough's worn textbook How to Keep Your Temper to Mr. Stevens for $2.98. 1753 little green slips of paper, donated by Miss Palmer, are sold to Janet Reinhart for S9.89. who will wallpaper her living room with them. Mr. Holden's entire salesmanship library, including. How to Win Friends and Influence People, to Jake for S7.03. For $3.95, A1 Schuerger has just bought Mr. Meiriman's yellow sunflower tie to wear with his cool orchid levis. Next on the list is a very valuable personal item, Jim Stuckey's little black book, which is finally sold, after a neck-and-neck battle between Larry Brakowiecki and Dick Brown. Dick got the little black book for the highest bid of the dayâ$50.00. Catching his breath after the last battle, D.D.T. announces three pairs of boots and a saddle, donated by Betty Keller, which are bought by Hoppy Beech, Tex Szeremeta, and Annie Oakley Feeley for $6.58. A Roges Thesaurus donated by Ken Klem-entis is bought by Beverly Pristas for $3.00. Bev seems to be surprised to discover that she has just bought a book! In between the main items and during the intermission. D.D.T. is selling forty-six elevator tickets to gullible freshmen, interrupted only by the shouts of Y-Teeners who are trying to sell thirty-five pounds of saltwater taffy in the crowd. A chair with a plate on the back of it. to be inscribed with the purchaser's name, donated by the Student Council, was bought by Roger Wicker for $22.00. A book of 1,001 jokes, given by A1 Fas-singer and sold to Frank Soldat for those boring intermissions during college board exams, brings in $4.85 for the cause. A1 Schuerger and Joe Schreiber donated their red beards which were sold immediately to Mr. Ferguson for S3.85. It seems that D.D.T. has just run out of items! He appeals to the crowd for donations, since we are only S9.08 short of our goal. We are about to witness the greatest sacrifice of the day. as those unselfish engaged girls, Joyce Hess, Janet Reinhart, Janice Giorgione, Joy Marshall, Nadine Kail, Joyce Pindroh, LaVerne Ebosh, Sandy Kav-alec. Gay Shaffer, and Dolores Vesely, bravely step up to the platform and offer their sparklers to be auctioned. All the rings were bought by Sultan Brian McHugh for the remaining sum. Our goal is reached and now seniors of â56. we can rest in peace until '81 when according to the calculations of Treasurer Ron Elchesen, our supply of Vigoro will be depleted. Oh. rest ye well until that glorious day when fate may find us prosperous enough to purchase a fifty year supply! With this happy thought in mind, we end this proclamation. signed and sealed.
