Because you have been always ready to give your welcome advice whenever we were in need of it. In appreciation of your guidance to better citizenship and because you have joined with us to make our social lives more enjoyable. We hereby .with every warm affection, dedicate our yearbook to Miss Lanese, Mr. Hicks and Mr. Levine. We do this in the hope that you will remember us as a class of which you will always be proud. P S 4 NEIL D. MATHEWS To Members of the Class of January, 1955: John Stuart Mill, famous nineteenth century English philosopher, wrote: One man with a belief is a social force superior to ninety-nine men who have only an interest. We hope that your four years at Rhodes High School have helped you to develop a belief in our educational institutions, a belief in the Republic of which you are a part and a belief in your fellow human beings, as well as belief in yourselves. Your worth as citizens will depend largely upon your beliefs, especially those which impel you to the right kind of action. May each of you have reason to be proud of the way you do your part in the life of your community however small or great that part may be. NEIL D. MATHEWS Page 5 MISS HIER MR. GAISER MR. FERGUSON We wish to express our deepest gratitude and appreciation for the many ways in which you have helped us solve the problems which so often confronted us during our four years at Rhodes. Your guidance and understanding have helped us greatly, and will serve to make us better persons in the future. For this and the many other services you have rendered, we the January Class of ''55,'' sincerely thank you. February. 1951. John Vavroch gets off to a great start athletically by being high point man in his first Frosh basketball game against Lincoln. April. 1951, A gala Pop Concert is presented at Rhodes; the roster includes such musicians as Larry Mack. Louise Argenzi-ano, Irma Schweier, and Judy Foote. Vivian Kouba proves herself poised and able as she represents the 9B class in the Posture Contest sponsored by the Girls Leaders Club. Amid all this activity of becoming acquainted with high school life, we participate in the first Civil Defense Security Drill to take place at Rhodes. This had the boys wondering if they were gophers as they haunted the dark basements of the buildings. May. 1951, Fleet Footed Paul Sheridan and Bob Mackulin come in first and second respectively in the half-mile race to make a ood first impression as cindermen, although hodes bowed to West and Lincoln in the tri-meet. September. 1951. Coach Roberts sights John Vacroch. Dick Malm, and Tom McKenna as future varsity stars. How right he was! Along with these additions to the athletic department, Rhodes is fortunate enough to gain Mr. Moritz as assistant grid coach and gym instructor. October. 1951. Much controversy arises as the new report cards make their debut. The entire school system adopts this method of letter grading accompanied by attitude marks. Rhodes football team is yet to face Marshall. West Tech, and Lincoln with three senate wins already under their belts. November. 1951, Yes. this is the month of the BIG CHARITY GAME. Rhodes, west side champions, defeats Collinwood for the city crown in an action-packed game. Tom McKenna appears in Rhodes Review's Whos-it as a freckle-faced, brown eyed Irishman. The student body, though excited over the grid champs, was deeply saddened by the sudden death of Miss Barhyte on November 8th. Docember. 1951. The musical revue, For Old Times Sake” exhibited the talent of Rhodes students and proved to be a tremendous success. January. 1952—No longer freshmen, our fjrestige is accompanied by the addition of ohn Klamar, Cathy Merkle. Mathew Man-iacci. Ron Meihofer, Sandy Ripich. and Joan Rudo. February. 1952—Sandy Ripich becomes a member of the Rhodes Review Staff, as Rhodes celebrates its 20th anniversary. April. 1952 — Donning gym shoes and sports clothes, the faculty proves its skill to the student body on Faculty-Student Day in an effort to raise money for the Band Uniform Campaign. Stars included our own Miss Lanese, who performed in the Cripple Triple Trio, and Jeanine Jaster who opposed members of the faculty in basketball. May, 1952—Barbara Holter vies for 1952 Rhodes track queen, with Fred Brandstadt. manager. October. 1952-—Ralph Haak offers his services as manager of Rhodes football team, while Rccco Rivellino topples the maples for Rhodes kegler team. November. 1952—Rhodes review features Bill Dickens. Rose Marie Miller, Dorothy Foerstor, Jim Bird, and Peggy Perry for unusual names, while the choir prepared to order its new blue and silver robes. December, 1952—Sounds of Christmas bells, and the joyful atmosphere of Christmas surround the activities of musicians Louise Ar-genziano and Larry Mack as they enter the instrumental contest, while plans for The Waltz Dream operetta are in their early stages. Critics say it will be a tremendous success. February. 1953—Many of us found out for the first time that Ralph Haak had a twin sister. Ruth, when their pictures appeared in the Review. The Rhodes cheerleaders, of which Sandy Ripich was an important cog, took second place in the Arena competition. Page 38 March. 1953—Jeanine Jaster captained the girl's championship volleyball team and whether or not S.R. was a member of the anthropod family was being hotly debated. May, 1953 — Peggy Perry attempted to bring the posture queen to our class. Lois Kickel’s keen knowledge of sports won her third place in a Review sports quiz. Julius Shinko fought valiantly for a losing cause as the Rhodes badminton team bowed to West Tech. John Klamar and Fred Brand-stadt campaigned for and won offices of president and vice-president of the student council. June, 1953—Ward Daykin was one of the few successful members of the tennis team and llB's winning track numerals were Huetter, Klamar. Mackulin, and Sheridan. June also was the month of our much remembered good time at Round-Up Lake. September. 1953—We're llA's now, upperclassmen. and we're allowed to organize. The personable and capable officers we chose were Bob Turchanik. president; Ralph Haak, vice-president; Irma Schweier, secretary; George Hascher, treasurer; and Cathy Merkle, social chairman. A couple of purchases were made—the new student council buying an ill-fated juke box and the school finally making the dust-bowl officially ours. October. 1953—Our class held its first organized affair—a picnic. It was a great success. especially the supper-by-flashlight— almost as romantic as supper-by-candlelight. November, 1953—We attend a National Honor Society induction for the second time and it was especially thrilling to see three of our members, Jeanine Jaster, Ed Ayres, and John Klamar inducted into the N.H.S. Jim Bird was interviewed by the Rhodes Review” as a Hi-Y president. The Rhodes Rams climaxed their second thrill-packed championship season in three years by overwhelming Benedictine 40 to 14 in the Charity Game and became the undefeated city kings again. Our boys on the first team were John Vavroch and Bob Turchanik. Others winning football letters were Brandstadt. Klamar, and Sheridan. December. 1953—This seemed to be the month for dances. First came our class informal with the theme of Winter Wonderland.” Room 105 was the ballroom and snow, snowmen, and snowflakes were the decorations. After the dance most of us piled over to Sandy Ripich's for an enjoyable open house. The Y-Teen Christmas formal, The Holly Ball, also came this month and those who attended had a fine time. February. 1954—Overnight we were transformed from lowly juniors to high and mighty seniors—12B's none the less. This time the girls took three of five offices as we elected Bob Turchanik to his second term as president; John Klamar, vice-president; Sandy Ripich, secretary; Cathy Merkle, treasurer; and Irma Schweier. social chairman. March, 1954—Bob Turchanik was elected captain of the 1954 Rhodes Rams football team by a vote of the lettermen. and Ron Meinhofer won an R” in basketball. April, 1954—We attended our third National Honor Society induction and Cathy Merkle joined the ranks of the exalted. Room 105 again was the ballroom as we held our 12B informal with Glenn Miller and his music as the theme and Moonlight Serenade as the title. After the dance the walls of the Ripich home again creaked with the goings on of another open house. June. 1954—We had fine weather for our picnic. There were all sorts of contests; baseball. football, and eating. As we left for the long summer vacation the inspirational revelation that the next semester would be our last hit us and also the practical revelation that the last semester was going to be an expensive one and we had better get to work and get ourselves some cash on hand. August 1954—For some of our class the semester started August 20. but most of us were just making money or loafing yet this month. September, 1954—Well this is it—-that last semester, that one that goes, oh so fast. We wore warned about senioritis and we feel sure we're conquering that disease. Also this month we again put the reins of the class in the capable hands of Bob Turchanik. president; Fred Brandstadt, vice-president; Jeanine Jaster. secretary; Ed Ayres, treasurer; Cathy Merkle, social chairman; and Sandy Ripich. yearbook chairman. October, 1954—Plans for our picnic were made and executed and fun was had by all. Our Rambling Rams are on the move again and we're hoping for another you know what game. November, 1954—Our informal under the title of Masquerade was another success for our class, and plans are being made for our Prom. December. 1954 — The end is drawing closer now and tears were flowing at the Christmas Concert given by the Rhodes Music Departments. January, 1955—A new year and for most of us a new way of life after that last thrilling day that's coming soon. Our high school years are ended. We see them now in 1970 nested snuggly in their own private Sherwood Forest. What's this? Why it's Preacher Sheridan seeking counsel with George Hascher. It seems that a little Bird, by the name of Jim has passed around the word that the Hascher is trying to throw another one of his infamous parties after the Sherwood Stamp, which is under the able direction of Steve Andrews and Dick DeMooy. Now what? Our fleet-footed messengers, Jeanine Jaster, and Bob Mackulin come crashing through the underbrush announcing the theft of our spiked drinks, by the arch villains Edward G. Rochinson and Richard, swivel hips. Malm. As the empty beverage wagon driven by Tony Wilczynski comes in on all four wheels, McKenna. McKenna. McKenna, and McKenna, the merry men are thrown into disorder over the tremendous loss, hence our two great sleuths Harry Arnold and Dorothy Foerster are sent to track down the villains. Fletcher Reynolds, zoologist of the forest, has developed an amazing strain of deer that stand still, as our famous food hunters Shirley Bouga and Ward Daykin shoot at them. The venison is then prepared by Anna Urbanskyj into one of her foreign intrigue dishes, with the help of her able assistant Carol Erdman. Joanne Bakos and Judy Foote are busily at work sewing the mantels of green—green? for the merry men—merriest of all being smiling Bob Smith. Now around the fire Rose Marie Miller is dancing to the strains of their song, Rose Marie I Love You as sung by our troubador, Bob Woogie Wohlgemuth. Oh ho! More excitement. Larry Mack and Jerry Rusinko are unsuccessfully trying to tear apart Bob Tucky Turchanik and Dr. John Klamar; they still can't get over the fact that they both can't be President! Cathy Merkle is seen frantically running toward John with her first aid kit, to nurse his battered remains. Bill Dickens and Fred Brandstadt are still dark horses in the race for Vice-President. Off and away we detect Ron Rodamer and big Norm Skudderin trying to sell their own rolled cigarettes to Jackie Pall. John Vavroch and Louise Argenziano are off in the forest practicing their duets! Ha! June Kaufmann is frustrated these days; unable to find any walls to paint murals on, she has resorted to carving in trees. And from behind one such tree we watch Peggy Perry as she edges out Betty Jane Cook in one of their notorious drag races on their chopped and channeled stallions. Pace 42 We see Pat Walker and Louise Kaufmann looking around the lorest trying to find something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue. Sorry to say Sandy Ripich is not with us because she chose to face the hard cold world at the side of a certain blond haired Swede. Here come the master yoemen—yo-yo men that is—Dave Seelbach, Ron Kronenberger, and Richard Coakwell, led by their champion Will Scarlet Janos. The new singing sensations, the Four Honey Drippers, Rocco Rivellino, John Hazey, Gary Schmotzer, and Ralph Haak have dedicated their latest song. Oh You Beautiful Doll, to Tom, Sarge. Deiotte. Jester Joan Rudo is devoting most of her time these days to trying to make Carl Wein laugh. What's this, Walt, FuMan Choo. Syder is in the comer of the glen worshipping an oriental idol of himself. Elaine Behm is busily fighting off Julius Shinko who just finished a course in A1 Rose's School for Casanovas. Ed is putting on, Ayres that is. A small crowd has gathered to watch wrestling on the green. In the feature event we see Bouncing” Barb Holter versus Nancy, Hot Head, Haas. An excellent match except for our referee. Little Ron Meinhofer, who is always trying to get into the holds. In Barb's corner we see Harvey Huetter going wild as his protege is floored by Hot Head. Floyd Stevenson, unable to leave his GMC at home lugged it here on his muscular back so he could tinker with it. Flash: Julius Shinko is still developing the negatives for the class yearbook! Queen of the May. Vivian Kouba, upon her own request is attended by her faithful servant, Tom Shaddock. Eleanor Doucha is tripping around the table, setting out portions of food for the merry-men as they come from a relaxing day at work. Irma Schweier and Lois Kickel are still throwing their weight around—one hundred and one hundred thirty respectively. After the meal, the whole band of Merry-men gathers around the flickering fire raising high their voices in tribute to Dear Old Rhodes High. WUPJiAIT.JUOlCUUr. «• ■Mtctau wies to MdiicAa scH MWap a T6 ms ourny ° Foreword In rhis thirty-second edition of Rhodes Yearbook, the aim has been to reflect ever)’ phase of our high school life. There arc pictures, grave and gay; pictures that will remind us, through the years to come, of the good friends we have had, the good times we have known, and the rooms and corridors that have echoed to our foot-steps. Many pictures will bring smiles; some, perhaps, will bring a tear. The thought has ever been uppermost, in compiling this book, that a yearbook is not just for today and tomorrow, but something that should grow more interesting and dear to us all through the passing years. When some members of this class shall have reached the heights that the records of their past achievements indicate they will attain, we shall want to look again at the jolly, informal shots that reflect these happy days of comradeship at Rhodes and say, with pride, 1 knew him when------ Deepest expressions of gratitude are due to the school administration and our dass adviser, Mr. Tanko, for their unfailing assistance and wise counsel. Thanks also is due to the teaching staff whose members have been helpful, patient, and tolerant of the Yearbook Committee's struggles to compile the material that has gone into this yearbook. The entire class should appreciate the co operation of the staff members who appear in the faculty photograph. No school record can be complete without that most important of all factors—the teaching staff! Students will remember these men and women wirh deep gratitude. Members of the senior class and many under-class members have co-operated in supplying the hundreds of memory-jogging snapshots that appear in these pages. No words can express the loyalty, hard work, and intelligent co-operation of the members of the Yearbook Committee. In addition to willingly assuming their share of grueling routine work, members of this committee have made special contributions. Marilyn Jahnke designed and executed the cover-linings. With Don MacFarlanc, she also wrote the Class Prophecy'. Rosemary Wanko and Grant Lawrence compiled the Gass History. The Gass Will is the work of Janeal Turnbull and Paul Rozilo. Dave Ncldon served as yearbook committee photographer and Rose Ratka, committee typist. And now, Classmates, rhis Yearbook is yours. We leave it to your mercies and we hope, to your enjoyment. If you feel it is YOUR Yearbook we have succeeded in our endeavors. It is for you to determine whether or not we have accomplished out purpose. The Editor. Ptfc 2 r MISS BLANCHE JENNEY DEDICATION We dedicate our yearbook to you, Miss Jenney, with sincere respect and deep affection. This is our way of showing our appreciation to you for your guidance and help during our four years at Rhodes. We appreciate the patience and understanding with which you instilled in us the knowledge of the various phases of higher mathematics. We’ll remember you as a teacher and friend who was always ready and willing to help us solve our problems. We hope that you will remember our class as one that always tried to live up to the principles of the school. THE SENIOR CLASS June, 1955 P ge3 NEIL D. MATHEWS To Members of the Class of Jane, 1955: We hope that Rhodes High School has offered each of you opportunities through which to prepare for more effective citizenship and more successful living. However, your diploma is not a guarantee of life-long success. Achievement of success in the years ahead will depend largely upon the manner in which you take-advantage of opportunities and build upon the foundation which we hope has been laid during the past four years. May each of you, in accepting the rights and privileges to which your diploma entitles you, accept in full the responsibilities and obligations which it places upon you. Best wishes. P««c 4 Neil D. Mathews We of this class have known you not only as a counsellor, Mr. Gaiser, but as a teacher and friend. In each capacity you have served us well. You have shown us the importance of truth and taught us to face things and make the best of circumstances. You have taught us that there is no cause for shame in being wrong, if we learn from our mistakes. Words cannot express our gratitude. We of this graduating class may be a bit over-confident, Miss Hier. No doubt this is typical of youth. Perhaps it is unfortunate that this confidence is likely to fade with time. Few of us may ever know the taste of fame, but perhaps there may be one among us who has the qualities of leadership that the world needs. We believe that you have helped us to recognize, in ourselves and in our classmates, such potential leadership as we possess. You have kindled in every heart, where leadership dwells, a small flame that will grow with the years until it may eventually shine brightly enough for world recognition. We shall always be grateful to you. Choosing a vocation or a college is something like travelling in the blackness of night. You, Mr. Ferguson, have served many of us much as a small candle serves a wanderer in the dark. You have shown us the way, and yet you let us make our own decisions. We shall always remember your guidance that may have kept some of us from stumbling. Thank you, for always being there when we needed you. P. e48 SANDS OF TIME As we of the class turn our gaze back and look at our footprints in the sand we can trace our path to the days when Rhodes presented a new challenge in our lives. Wc have already lived that part of our lives, now it is our duty to take from the past something on which to base the future. Life itself is as inconsistent as the shifting sands of the Sahara. Problems which faced us during our brief stay at Rhodes arc now a thing of the past. Just as the face of the desert is constantly changing, so do our lives. Wc entered Rhodes apprehensive of what awaited us. It was truly a challenge to become a part of the school. But. let us look back and see exactly what we were doing during our first year at Rhodes. We had our first taste of school spirit through attendance of football games. The season was climaxed with the winning of the Charity Game. James Koshel, Bill Liatti, and Marcia McClung had their footlight debut in For Old Times Sake' One April afternoon the majority of us descended upon the boys' gym to see the faculty in action at a Student-Faculty Day gathering. The proceeds netted $425 for new band uniforms. P.S. The faculty out did the students.) The first Awards Assembly which we attended was on June 3. Ken DeBow was recognized for his artistic talents while Jim Etcrovich was honored for receiving a perfect score on a National Current Events Test. The first year ended and we plodded on. we were just beginning to feel as if we belonged. It was in the 10B that Marilyn Gallagher. Mary Ann Mack. Marguerite Rczabcck, and Lucille Shillat became members of Girl's Leaders During that same year many of us learned the art of artificial respiration first hand. Charles Craig and A! Kehoe became water boys and aided the football team through victories and defeats. It was also while we were in the tenth grade that ID tags were introduced. Also the Honors Reading idea was put into effect. Just as some things began others came to an end. Mr. Vannorsdall retired from the position of basketball coach that year. Zorian Horodysky. a newcomer from Czecho- slovakia, made all of us feel a bit stupid when we learned of his knowledge of five different languages. Barbara Mate, and Rita Pauloski were in a modern dance program at Central High. Also represented among the energetic of our class were Paul Karas and Chester Zemany, Decathlon stars; Ron Katt, Bob Koeblitz. Don MacFarlane, Allan Roesch, Alfred Schilling, Frank Valchar, and Ed Wald tried their hand at bowling. Katherine Korylak showed herself to be an expert at badminton and Toni Uhlik received the highest score in the girls' bowling tournament. After two years things began to get a bit routine. However, we saw in the not too distant horizon hopes of becoming seniors. At the beginning of the 11B semester we found that Margaret Frueh was the editor of the Rhodei Review, the first junior ever to receive this post. Linda Tichy and Beverly Wehr became members of the Triple Trio and Lawrence Berg. Martin Fesing. and Clayton McElwaine received positions with the Boys' Octet. At Hallowe'en the store windows of Brooklyn took on an artistic look. We found that Rosemary Brcderick, Rhonda Gasior, Bill Polk, and Eileen Thomas, were partly responsible for they had entered the Hallowe'en painting contest. In November we again went to the stadium to cheer our football team on to a second Charity-Game victory This time Benedictine fell before our powerful Rams to the score of 40 to 14. Dr. Albert Schweitzer was the subject of a radio program (in Deutsche) presented over WBOE by Al Bachman, Richard Crocco, Leatricc Eiben. and Paul Rozilo. The business men of our class were Ken Frank and Dave Uasior who were active members ot Junior Achievement. Instead of being followers Arlinc Andrykovich. Judith Coll, and Alice Revilock became Leaders. Objection your honor. was one of many of Jim Smith's lines as he took the part of the prosecutor in the dramatic courtroom production Night of Jan. 16.” Also in the limelight were Shirley Criswell, Bob Dash. Lynn Hnar, Carl Keske. Carol Kovach. George Kraus, and Marcia McClung. Bill Barth. Paul Karas, Phil Senich, and Alfred Page 52 SANDS OF TIME—{Continued) Schilling demonstrated their squashbuckling techniques by taking part in the intramural wrestling program. Girls' soccer games were in full swing that fall with Mary Dzuranin and Mary Gigante as team managers. Representing Rhodes in a tennis tournament at Flora Stone Mather was Mary Ann Mack. Armed with their instruments Louis Dixon, Mary Kubala, Grant Lawrence, and Bill Super took posts with the newly formed All-City Orchestra. Lawrence Berg, Leatrice Eiben, Marilyn Gallagher, Barbara Mate, Gayton McElwaine, and Beverly Wehr found a new challenge in All-City Chorus. Rhodes became the possessor of a new dance band, members from our class were A1 Bachman, Larry Coyne, Lawrence Fodor, and Bill Super. Keeping on their toes was all in a day's work for Mary Dzuranin, Carol Holda, Mary Ann Mack, Rita McAuley, Rita Pauloski, Alice Revilock, Lucille Shillar, Nancy Sledz, Toni Uhlik, Rosemary Wanko, and Joan Yanchak who danced in a modern dance program. A course in culinary arts for the male species became a reality during this semester under the title Boys' Chef. Bob Dash, Ken Fenner, Bob Koeblitz, Joe Mirka, Dave Neldon, Ken Pollock, and Yarid Sahley have since become charter members of the burnt biscuit brigade. However, they always have competition from such people as Rosalie Conte, Mary Loudon, Marcia McClung, Carol Schnatcrbeck, Virginia Seda, and Sandra White, members of the Home Economics Gub. Flappers, dusters, and the charleston came to Rhodes in the form of Our Hearts Were Young and Gay. Found taking parts in this play were Carl Keskc, Carol Kovach, Marguerite Rezabcck, Yarid Sahley, and Lucille Shillat. Pat Johanni was in charge of the dances while Juliette Courey and Mary Loudon took charge of the wardrobing. Showing their dandy form the Dan Dandies with Donna Dick. Rose Ratka, Rose Rocco. and Marilyn Schnell became the girls' basketball champs. Student Council elections placed Richard Crocco and A1 Bachman in the offices of president and vice president respectively. It was Eugene Basalla who managed their campaigns. Carolyn Noss became secretary and Toni Uhlik was in charge of the funds. Our class officers were Joe Mirka, president; Frank Valchar, vice president; Marilyn Gallagher, secretary, and Juliette Courey. treasurer. Marilyn Schnell and her social committee which consisted of A1 Bachman. Richard Crocco. Ken Frank. Ruth Haak, Paul Karas. Carl Keske, George Kraus, Grant Lawrence, Monica Martz, Bill Meier, Rose Ratka. and Lucille Shillar were busy creating Paradise Island the theme of our first informal that was to take place in the Rhodes ballroom. Mary Loudon was Rhodes' representative to Halle Brothers fashion board. Francis Becker had brought in the greatest amount of tax stamps in the school. Janeal Turnbull, who had submitted two essays, received a National Scholastic Writing Merit Award. It was while in the eleventh grade that Laverne Gaydos was one of the typists who helped the Rhodes Review staff. In the 11A Richard Gocco, Leatrice Eiben, Jim Eterovich, Margaret Frueh, Marilyn Gallagher, Carl Keske. Grant Lawrence, Rita Pauloski, An-thea Poly, and Lucille Shillat were inducted into National Honor Society. At an Honor Awards Assembly that year Rhonda Gasior received an art certificate and A1 Bachman. Eva Corn. Larry Coyne, Louis Dixon, Larry Fodor. Mary Kubala, and Bill Super were presented with music awards. Seniors at last! To many of us it was not quite the thrill we had expected. However, it did mean that soon an old way of life would end and a new would begin. Our officers in the 12B were Joe Mirka, president; Richard Gocco, vice president; Marilyn Gallagher, secretary; and Peggy Bannasch. treasurer. Marilyn Schnell, our social chairman, had the able assistance of Juliette Courey, Eugene Ender-lein, Jim Eterovich, Ken Frank. Dave Gasior, Ruth Haak, Marilyn Jahnke, Grant Lawrence. Monica Martz, Carolyn Noss. Rose Ratka. Arlyne Robinson. Lucille Shillat, and Jim Smith, her committee members. They all helped to create the scenery that gave our second informal the atmosphere of a Chinese Garden. During this semester Carol Graf. Marilyn Jahnke. Mary Kubala, Betty l.aczko, Ronald Lipin, Don MacFarlane, Rosemary Wanko, and Martha Yonek were inducted into National Honor Society. Page 53 SANDS OF TIME—(Continued) Through a Hallowe'en art contest Norma Dorn started making the knowledge of art pay off by winning a $5.00 honorable mention. Then came the 12A elections. Joe Mirka was again voted into the presidency; Jim Eterovich became vice president; Marilyn Gallagher continued as secretary; and Richard Crocco became treasurer. Lucille Shillat, social chairman, had a committee which consisted of Charles Craig. David Gasior, Rhonda Gasior, Carl Keske. Rira McAulcy. Rita Pauloski, Marguerite Rezabcck, Allan Rocsch, and Dick Wolcott. The yearbook committee, with chairman, Margaret Frueh, consisted of Marilyn Jahnkc, Grant Lawrence, D n MacFarlane, Dave Ncldon, Rose Ratka, Paul Rozilo, Rosemary Wanko. and Jancal Turnbull. A number of our class helped the dream of a social room come closer to a realization by helping to paint the designated room. They were A1 Bachman, Richard Crocco, Grant Lawrence, Ron Lipin, and Marilyn Schnell. Scholarship played an important part in our class. Don MacFarlane and Paul Rozilo received honorable mention in a Sratc General Scholarship Test. On the Ohio Psychological Test, Richard Crocco. Jim Eterovich, Peter Ferguson. Lawrence Fodor, Margaret Frueh, Rhonda Gasior, Marilyn Gallagher. Carol Graf, Marilyn Jahnkc, Carl Keske, Grant Lawrence. Ronald Lipin, Don MacFarlane. Jim Ostas. Rita Pauloski, lisa Richter. Barbara Roth, Paul Rozilo, Jim Smith, Joan Spyak, Jancal Turnbull, Frank Valchar, and Paul Wiest received scores above 100. The 12A found seven more inductees for National Honor Society from our class. They were A1 Bachman, Peter Ferguson, Lawrence Fodor, Rhonda Gasior. Mary Jane Kozimor, Mary Loudon, and Clayton McElwaine. In athletics we will always remember Joe Mirka, Ralph Molinari, Phil Senich. Dick Swasey, and Frank Valchar for their efforts in varsity football. In varsity basketball Ralph Molinari and Joe Sasa-rak will also be remembered The members of the track ream from our class were Paul Karas, Joe Mirka, Ralph Molinari, Yarid Sahley, Phil Senich. Frank Valchar. and Chester Zemany. Active in intramural sports were Ken DeBow. Ralph Dienes, Ken Fenner, Stanley Grudzien, James Jenkins, Bill Polk. Roger Powell, A1 Schilling. Lynn Snyder. John Span. Gary Tildes, John VanDyke, Robert Yuzva, and Jerry Zarlenga. It was also in the 12A that Sally Pinch won two places in the Scholastic Art Exhibition. We had many girls who helped teachers by serving as secretaries. Lenore Henke, Mary Dzur-anin, and Verna Gaglione could often be seen sitting behind a typewriter. During our stay at Rhodes it was not uncommon to see Janet Heideloff playing the cymbals in rhe orchestra. We also saw Suzanne Hawkins, among others of our musically minded class, march in the band. As we look back we find that James Jenkins had come from Oklahoma, Louise Reant from California, and Marilynn Miller from Texas. As we look back we can also see Juliette Cour-ey. Bob Dash, and Matthew Maniaci as they appeared in Our Town,” another dramatic presentation at Rhodes. Perhaps in the future Pat Bolick and Mary Lezan will be nurses judging from rheir membership in F.N.A. and Shirley Zutz may be a teacher if her belonging to F.T.A. is any sign. William Russ, Dale Wagner, and Richard Zechman, were only three of the many in our class who were members of the Forman's Club. It was also during the twelfth grade that Lawrence Pamer displayed his ability in photography by submitting a picture to the Plain Dealer. Last but not least we also remember the color guards at the football games. They were Eugene Enderlein, Jim Ercrovich, Ken Fenner, Ken Frank, and David Gasior. Now let us turn our gaze to the desert again. The wind is beginning to blow. We can hear it whistling and moaning as if it were warning us to take note of our past and learn. The dunes are slowly moving. We can not help comparing ourselves with those dunes. We too are changing, we are now going out into the world, we are as small and unimportant as one of those granulars of sand that compose a dune. However, we must go on just as the caravans that crossed the desen kept on. If we slip and fall in the sand we must get up and plod on It has often been said that each man must play his part in life. But remember, the stage can be as broad as the mind of the man. We still have a great deal to learn and a long journey before us. but, if we remain open minded and learn from our mistakes we will all find our rewards in life; just as an oasis is the welcome reward to rhe weary wayfarer of the desert. Page 54 JUNE '55 As we soar over rhc world in our little balloon, watching the sun rise in the east, memories of the pasr spring up before us. It is the year 1985— thirty years after that memorable date of June 14, 1955. What has happened to all our classmates from JFR since that time? Where have the paths of life led them? WiU we ever know? • • • As we peer through our telescope toward Earth, we discover that we arc drifting over the New York Harbor. Next to the Statue of Liberty, we see another statue—who could it be? Closer examination reveals that it is a statue of our old friend and senior class president, JOE MIRKA, the noted Marine hero, who, when his company ran out of powder, saved the day by throwing cannonballs at the enemy. Nearby, in his ultra-modern office sits Chief Customs Inspector, LARRY FODOR, who has just begun dictating to his VERY private secretary, RHONDA GASIOR. who has recently distinguished herself in the field of shorthand. She won an award for writing 500 words a minute. We find we are now drifting farther on, into the heart of New York. We pause for a moment above the WJFR-TV Building, where that famous program, John's Other Wife’s Husband's Girlfriend, written by DORIS BASTYN, is about to go on the air. Starring in this program is KEN FRANK as the hero. Co-starring are AL KEHOE, MAXINE DIENES. DAVE GASIOR. and PEGGY BANNASCH. And who is that stepping before the cameras? Why it’s MARY GIGANTE, about to read rhc commercial for Lindner’s Big Liver Pills, developed by AGNES LINDNER Outside the studio is BILL POLK, manufacturer of You-Can-Be-As-Tall-As-She-Is Shoes. We pass over the Starem Theater, owned and operated by ED STONF.BROOK. Spike Jones is playing here at present, in the band of another friend of ours—LOUIS DIXON. Farther down the great white way we discover PAT JOHANNI and KEN DeBOW, who arc now dancing together with the Saddler Wells Ballet. PAUL ROZILO is not far behind; we find him with his little tin cup, collecting pennies for Radio Free Europe. He has just received a large donation from CHET ZEMANY. New York Yankee baseball player. As we drift slowly out of New York, we glance back at the new LIN building, designed by JIM ETEROVICH, without a room for Russia. The PROPHECY construction was in charge of woman engineer MARGARET FRUEH. Clouds envelop the balloon and we see no more until we hover over Boston, where we see LARRY COYNE on his way to rehearsal with the Boston Philharmonic. At MIT. BARBARA DIVICOLI is teaching anatomy. We stop for a moment to listen to KEN FENNER. who is making a speech on a street corner. He is trying to repeal the prohibition law passed by BILL MEIER. The wind is getting stronger, however, and we must be on our way again. Before very long, we find ourselves in the vicinity’ of Cleveland, and dear old Rhodes. There is the Dan-Dee Company, where SNOOKY NOSS is busily putting salt on potato chips. Over to the left is the Pfeiffer Beer Company. We hear that MARY KUBALA is now playing the piccolo for their commercials. Farther on, we are able to make out the sign of the Lipin Nipple Company, founded by RON LIPIN. Well, look who’s over there by the railroad tracks—that educated hobo, RICK CROCCO! (He's trying fo Het a freight train back to Harvard. ) We leave him to his searching, and continue to float over the city. We spot Radio Station WUGH, where disc-jockey ZORIAN HORODYSKY. is about to play that new hit song, Eibcn Workin’ on the Railroad, written by LEATRICE EIBEN, and recorded by GEORGE the Groancr SHUBA. We hear that Fred Waring has just left town —and we arc quite disappointed, because we had hopes of seeing another old friend. BUDDY Mc-ELWAINE, who is singing tenor with his group. As we drift out of the city, we also see that star half back of rhc Cleveland Browns, JIM KOSHEL. tearing the tickets in half, and giving them half back. But. we’ve lingered here long enough, and we must depart for parts unknow-n. Our next stop is in Washington, D. C.. where we see CAROL GRAF, the first woman president, presenting MATT MANIACI, mailman, a certificate for twenty-five years' service without stepping on a crack in the sidewalk. Here we also sec LENORE IRONS, diplomat, who is ironing out difficulties between the U. S. and Russia. In Griffith Park LYNN HNAT is bat boy for the Washington Nats. Pane 8 JUNE '55 PROPHECY (Continued) Farther south, we seen MARILYNN MILLER sewing bars on the Confederate Flag. We learn that last week, MARY JANE KOZIMOR was caught posting bills saying, Save your Confederate money—the Sourh will rise again! We don’t have to worry though; she is being defended by that able woman lawyer SALLY PINCH. We are unable to go much farther, however, because the wind has shifted and we arc heading north again. We can’t distinguish any landmarks until we reach Chicago, and the first person we see is ART GRUDZ1EN. It looks like he is holding a gun to the back of RALPH DIENES. What could be going on? Oh—Ralph must have called him Stanley, and now he is going to pay for it! Across the street arc the headquarters for the Fast Driving Club for Men Fat and Fiftyish, and coming out of the front door are four of its most prominent members, PETE FERGUSON, MARTIN FESING, GEORGE LENHARD, and ED MURRAY. The originator of this club was RICHARD ZECHMAN, who gives the tests for drivers’ licenses in Chicago. In town is that famous editor of True Confessions,” AL BACHMAN, whom we missed seeing when we were in New York. On his staff is DAVE NELDON, modern photographer. He is talking to LYNN SNYDER, newspaper critic, about some ’’snide remarks he has made in his column. Also working for that same paper is BOB DASH, writing obituaries. One of the most read articles is MARGUERITE REZABECK’S etireugram puzzles. (Etireugram spelled backwards is Marguerite.) We pass one of the Valchar, Valchar, Frank Parking Lots, owned by FRANK VALCHAR, who has a huge chain all over the country. Parked in the lot we see the Cadillac of MARY LOUDON, manufacturer of Loud ’n Clear Hearing Aids. We hate to leave, but the wind carries us to Milwaukee, where we find EUGENE BASALLA, designing pianos after a certain swimming pool. We also see JANET HEIDEI.OFF, a distributor of Hudapote Beer, bottled by FRANCIS BECKER. And down a little side street, we pass RUTH HAAK’s pawn shop. Their slogan is Well buy it hock, stock, and barrel. Just outside of town, we meet GRANT LAWRENCE, manufacturer of Cookie’s Zweiback, who has just made his second million. Drifting still westward, we pass BOB KOE-BLITZ’s studio, where he is hard at work painting a new whistle in Whistler’s Mother. Posing with the whistle is La VERNE GAYDOS. After a lull in the wind, we finally manage to drift over Colorado. Through our trusty telescope we see DANNY CLARK, who is running for state senator, arguing with his campaign manager, DONNA DICK. It seems that Danny wants to kiss young mothers instead of babies, and Donna doesn't agree. The wind is starting to kick up from the northeast, and before very long, we find ourselves over Hoover Dam, where we see DALE WAGNER, who has a very good job plugging up holes in the dam. (Ooooh, what we said!) From our position over Hoover Dam. we see the neon sign advertising GENE KULIK's gambling casino, Heads I Win; Tails You Lose. Running his roulette wheel we see IRENE YAN-KURA. Now over Reno, we find VERNA GAGLIONE, wealthy socialite, who has just returned for her fourth RENO-vation. Just across the street from the courthouse, we see a very pretty building which houses the We’ll-Find-You-Another-One Lonely Hearts Club, owned and operated by JOHN LESKO and JIM OSTAS. Two of its latest customers have been PAT CHAMPLE and MARY ANN MACK. What's this we sec in Carson City? We see KEN POLLOCK who is playing first fiddle in NANCY SMITH s square dance combo. Here we go drifting north again. We slow up over Eureka, California, where we sec city councilman, CARL ENGELHART working for lower speed limits. Pajte 59 JUNE '55 PROPHECY (Continued) Drifting south to Sacramento, we find NORMA DORN, writer of a new American Slang Dictionary talking to RON KATT. It seems he wants Norma to change that frequently used slang saying, “All you cool cats to All you cool dogs. The wind has caught up with us again, and we are going farther south to Hollywood. Here we see a great many of our old friends. LUCILLE SHILLAT is now producing Dragnet. In one of the meeting halls we find LYNN GALLAGHER. giving a lecture on her recent book, You Too Can Support Your Husband Through Pre-med. The first copy was bought by EILEEN THOMAS. In her audience, we see LOUISE REANT and GEORG1ANNA R1HA, who are starring in that recent smash picture The Long and the Short of It. This was written by JUDY COLL, and directed by BOBBI MATE of Miracle Pictures—if it s good, it s a miracle! Representing another phase of entertainment, we find RUSSELL SPRIGGS, who has just taken over for Don Wilson on the Jack Benny Show. And now westward over thousands and thousands of miles of placid blue water until we finally sight some land below. Down there in Hawaii, we see BOOTS RAND, diving for pearls, seeing what she can garner. As we continue drifting over the Pacific, we look back, and see BILL SUPER on Cloud 7, teaching Gabriel how to blow his horn. Blowing along in the Gulf Stream, we pause for a while over Bermuda, where ROSE MARIE RATKA is typing the 172nd copy of the June. 1955 yearbook. (After seeing the prophecy, no one would prinr it.) She is staying at Resr-In-Pcace, NANCY TOMSIKs home for retired career girls. We sail our little balloon to the Canary Islands where we discover JOAN YANCHAK raising parakeets. Because of strong winds, we continue right on to Madrid, where we find SANDRA WHITE dancing the fandango. And we also see LINDA TICHY at the Madrid Arena, where she is in charge of the bull. Heading for the Riviera, we find ROGER POWELL picking up where Rubcrosa left off. Now over Paris, we see CAROL SCHNATER-BECK selling a home permanent developed by Page 60 JUNE '55 PROPHECY (Continued) GERALDINE DERNAY. This permanent is styled after the hair-do of NANCY SLEDZ, world famous model of the Y-look, designed by BARBARA ROTH. This hair product has been denounced by hair stylist PAUL KARAS as being unpractical. In Paris we sec the business establishment of NANCY KNEREM world wide seller of cosmetics. In Switzerland, we find SHIRLEY ZUTZ putting holes in Swiss Cheese.
