Mrs. Sancetta, for helping us to become successful scholastically and socially, we proudly dedicate our yearbook with the hope that you will remember us as a lively and loyal senior class. Pagt s NEIL D. MATHEWS To Members of the Class of January. 1954: The diploma which each of you will receive upon your graduation from Rhodes High School carries with it a great amount of prestige. The performance of Rhodes students and graduates over the years, in school and out, has had much to do with the growth of that prestige. The value of your diploma and the diplomas of other Rhodes graduates, past and future, can be enhanced by the things you do and the way you do them. It is important therefore that you be conscious of and accept your full share of responsibility for protecting and promoting the good name of your school. May your deals in the years ahead reflect only credit upon the school of which you, in the past four years, have become a very important part. Best wishes to each of you. Sincerely, NEIL D. MATHEWS Page 4 MISS HIER MR. BRYAN For your friendly, wise, and cheerful guidance; your willingness to hear our problems and to help us solve them, we wish to express our sincerest thanks to you. Miss Hier and Mr. Bryan. While in the past there may have been times when this appreciation was not too obvious, now we are able to see the justice of your actions. For these and many other services we thank you. MR. FERGUSON During the four years we have spent at Rhodes, Mr. Ferguson has always stood ready to help us in procuring a job. choosing a career, or selecting a college. Realizing that these decisions are some of the most important ones we shall ever make, we are deeply grateful to him for his wise counsel and sound advice. Pag• S6 (2la4A 'ityiAtony, tyattuanct 7957 JANUARY. 1950 — 124 bright-eyed freshmen entered 20th Century Rhodes movie lot. Many of the leading characters were discovered by the directors in the weeks that were to follow. FEBRUARY. 1950 — Dot Wegrzyn became one of the first freshmen noon movie attendants. MARCH, 1950 — At a party in the boys' gym the novices got acquainted with the senior stars (or was it vice versa?). We noticed that a few people, notably Ron and Don Thrall, were in since they were related to one of the directors. Mr. Scott. MAY, 1950 — Even stars can't be messy as we found out when the Citizens' club made us clean out our lockers and remove the picturesque photography that had inspired success. In the sports reel it was reported that the frosh runners had lost to Latin and West. Oh, well! JUNE, 1950 — The premier appearance of the amateur thespians: John Sopko, A1 Marg-grander, Ken Krava, Marlette Nebesar, Carol Verhovitz, Carol Wiest, Joyce Vacha. Catherine Koehn, Edward Martoch, Audrey Haker-korn. Dale Meder, Claire Charlton. Nancy Stephan. Sandy Volk. Beverly Schmidt. Joan Baker, Dot Wegrzyn, Dick Eiben. Martin Paw-lak, Louise Wreden, and Dale Borger in Der Krug, a German play. SEPTEMBER, 1950 — Eldie Oberacker, one of our stuntsmen, was found to be athletically inclined, according to the Rhodes Review. OCTOBER, 1950 — Jo-Ann Rosebrough proved herself to be photogenic as well as charming and healthy by winning the Belle-Vernon Arena and Ice Capades contest. NOVEMBER. 1950 — The newsreels reported that Coach Robert's frosh football team, consisting of Frank Blaha, Gary Baldwin. Dennis Ballinger, Dick Hutter, Dick Eiben, Bob Hoel, Jerry Ihnat, John Jacobson. Bob Kovacs, Ken Krava, Bill Matty, Eldie Oberacker, Glenn Preising, Tony Jeewik, Adam Robertson. Larry Simson. and Don Thrall, concluded the 1950 season unbeaten. Carol Wiest took the female lead in ' 'Bargains in Cathay, a presentation of the English department. DECEMBER. 1950 — Operations were suspended for a while because the ' Big Snow paralyzed transportation facilities. Our band returned from a charity apperance with top honors. Roger Allshouse won the Whosits? contest hold by the Rhodes Review and became one of its personalities in its next issue. JANUARY. 1951 — The Korean crisis brought about a change in boys' classes. Senior boys rehearsals in gym were required 5 times a week. Lucky them! Dick Vamos and John Jabobson starred on the freshmen basketball team with 16 and 12 points, respectively. FEBRUARY. 1951 — Roger Cudney's voice became familiar to everyone as he reported the news to us over WJFR for the Radio Guild. MARCH. 1951 — Color for our sets was provided by Carol Hofer, who won an academy award for her opaque color work. Orchestration awards were won by Dale Borger and Jack Walker in an instrumental contest. APRIL. 1951 — Security drills were initiated at Rhodes as a means of protection against an atom bomb attack. Lillian Soldat a member of Associated Artists, won an award for excellence in spelling. One of our script writers, Catherine Koehn. won an award of merit for a play about her ancestors. MAY. 1951 — Madam Wilson's Anti-lop-pers campaign was started to keep the stars in bug world instead of dream world. OCTOBER. 1951 — The directors changed to a different type of currency to reward us, so report cards now featured A's, B's, C's, and D's (even a few F's, we’re afraid). NOVEMBER. 1951 — Rhodes' ace kegler, Ken Krava. attained fame in the bowling world. Newsreel cameramen focused in the great Charity event in which 20th Century Rhodes defeated Metro-Collinwood, 21 to 14. One of our beloved directors. Miss Barhyte, died suddenly of a heart attack. DECEMBER. 1951 — The production For Old Time’s Sake starred Jeanette Klamet and Jo-Ann Rosebrough as Hula Dancers and Peggy O'Barner as a singing Irish col-een. Glenn Preising was the first of our heroes to receive a letter for playing varsity football. FEBRUARY. 1952 — Movie lot No. 306 rereceived merit for the highest attendance rec-or during the previous semester. The sports-reel was again in focus as the JV basketball team beat West to enter a 3-way tie for first place. Also featured in the sportsreel were track stars Gary Baldwin, Dick Hutter, Glenn Preising, Mike Diauto and Adam Robertson. MARCH, 1952 — A regional scholastic award was given to Scriptwriter Koehn for her entry on the history of South Brooklyn. At this time Dale Borger won an award for his violin playing. JUNE. 1952 — Scene painters Carol Hofer and Betty Sitek received recognition for excellence during the past year. SEPTEMBER. 1952 — Our boys broke into the big time in football and Don Thrall and Glenn Preising were interviewed as two striking examples of Rambling Rams. Disaster struck, however, when Dick Vamos dislocated his knee and it was feared the basketball team as well as the football team would be lacking his services. Dick Wahl and Dale Meder were elected vice president and treasurer of the Audio-Visual Aids Club. OCTOBER. 1952 — The first Alumni Homecoming game featured Jo-Ann Rosebrough, Jeanette Klamet, and Carol Lewis as the new cheerleaders. More of our thespians got opportunities to try their skill in the Great Big Doorstep. Carol Lewis. Roger Cudney, and Peter Rachwall were three who had roles in the presentation. Another first came to our class when Glenn Preising was elected the first boy secretary of the Citizens' Club. That debonaire star. Keeper of the Funds Deisner, and Social Chairman Rosebrough. OCTOBER. 1953 — John Jacobson, Ken Krava. and A1 Reinke became Rambling Rams in the Review. Rhodes defeated RKO Ignatius, and it looked like? ... Judy Wolcott, sponsored by John Jacobson, attended the queen at a Fathers' Day football game. NOVEMBER. 1953 — Doris Henkel. Mar-lette Nebesar, Joanne Tecco, Joyce Vacha, and Carol Wiest joined the ranks of Larry Simson. Lillian Soldat, Catherine Koehn. Judy Wolcott, Edward Martoch. Jerry Ihnat, Jeanette Klamet, Joanne Rosebrough, Dorothy Wegrzyn. and Ann Deisner who were already in the National Honor Society. Two big events came hard upon one another: 20th Century Rhodes defeated International Benedictine, 40 to 15, at the Charity Game; and our last informal, with the rousing title of Carrousel, was held in the boys' gym. DECEMBER, 1953 — Everyone eagerly anticipated the coming holidays so they could rest up for the big rush of the premier that was drawing nearer. JANUARY. 1954 — With commencement speeches memorized and the senior banquet and senior prom past nothing remains but the Big Night. Catherine Koehn and Dale Borger (?Ca t ‘P'tofe ectf, It is the year 19 . We find Martin Pawlak in a comfortable armchair watching television. But what's this he's seeing? Why it's Dolores Springer demonstrating reducing exercises and giving tips on dieting. And here comes Ann Zabrecky modeling a gorgeous creation designed by Gloria Mia no. Our announcer, Shirley Forst, now calls our attention to Beverly Schmidt, whose hair has been changed to the latest fashion. Next we discover Millie Belica in an apron giving culinary hints to the housewife. Now we hear Louise Wreden and Betty Sitek enacting their True Story. (Louise finally got her man and B. S. is still telling tales about her boyfriends.) Next. Dianne Eustes in Drug-Store Romance. Last on this series is Gentlemen (??John Sopko. Allan Reiss, and Chuck Kontras) Prefer Blondes. Now channel WJFR presents Headlines in the News. The election returns have just come in! Our new president is—Catherine Koehn, first woman president in the world, (voted best teacher of the year in 19 ). Roger Allshouse arrested for bootlegging. Ann Deisner, Secretary of the Treasury, absconds with $999,999,990; honeymoons with the brother of a well-known actress. Dale Meder perishes in flames, due to carelessness with a cigarette. Last of the morning programs is 'Bride and Groom. Peter Rachwell tells us about last week's newlyweds, Claire Charlton and Bob Hoel, who are now enjoying the Florida sun, while this week's couple, Judy Wolcott and John Jacobson, are preparing for their wedding ceremony. (Time out for lunch). Now to continue. WJFR brings us the noted psychiatrist, Carol Verhovitz, who will analyze a few people from the studio audience. Our first volunteer is Carol Hofer, the crazy artist who painted the reknowned Witch's Self-Portrait. Following her is Frank Blaha, who fears he is going crazy for love of a girl. The next person to be analyzed is Jim Dancik, who idolizes (we don't know why) Allen Karp, the jealous lover. There is time for just one more — Gary Baldwin, who has undergone quite a metamorphosis and has become almost human. The next program takes us to the campus of M. I. T., where we find the famous Director of Research, Lillian Soldat, B. S., M. S., Sc.D., and B. T. O.. in conference with Gerry Ihnat, college president. As we wander outside. we overhear Edward Martoch, outstanding nuclear physicist, and Dan Textoris. well-known English critic, heatedly arguing about the theory of the universe. Our next stop is a laboratory where we find David Block, reknowned chemical engineer, quietly sitting at his desk, issuing orders to his assistant, Joyce Vacha. who scurries back and forth to execute them. We now look in on Joan Baker who is trying to teach teachers to teach teachers. We find one of her pupils. Sandra Volk, getting help from the pupil opposite her. (Tch, tch!) We now go from the academic to the athletic aspect of campus life and discover Irene Germuska trying to read during a gym class conducted by Joyce Springer. We saunter over to the track, and when the dust culears. we see Little Mike Daiuto scooting under the hurdles. (Yes, we did say under .) And over in one corner we find Adam Roberston trying to persuade Athletic Director Don Thrall to intercede in his behalf in order that he may be eligible for track. Now loud cheers greet us from the football field, and as we draw near, we see that they are being led by Jo-Ann Rose-brough, Head Cheerleader. (Incidentally. Mother Nature still has not remedied her oversight.) The crowd suddenly roars its appreciation of Glenn Preising's unexpected pass to A1 Reinke, who picks the ball out of the air over the heads of his opponents. Our next program is Candid Mike (Larry Simson, alias Cecile B. or 3D McGee) nar- Page 11 rated, written, photographed, produced, and directed by L. S. (Mighty Fine Talker) himself. What's this? Why, it can't be! It's Dear (?) Old Rhodes High, and guess who's still there, banging on the radiator — Wee Willie Washer. Camera Number Two takes us to the Last Resort Loan Company— We lend money on your signature even if you can't write, where we find Eldie Oberacker, who is a regular customer, trying to borrow money for a trip to Tennessee. Almost hidden by a frosted window is Dorothy Wegrzyn, whose head is buried in a pile of accounting books. Reluctantly we say goodbye to Candid Mike and go to see the Roller Derby which stars Marjorie Koplin and Dick Wahl. While we eat supper, we are entertained by Ken Krava, sportsman, who describes his hunting and fishing (for mermaids!) in Canada. At the close of his program he brings us up to date on the latest sporting news, and we learn that Dale Borger has won the cross-country bicycle race. First of the after-dinner programs is the Lewis Talent Show, sponsored by Two-Ton Parker, the new owner of the Tic Toe Drive-In. We hear Peggy Barner sing Lover, Come Back To Me. Next we view Jeanette Klamet and Dennis Ballinger doing the graceful Dance of Destiny. After this the Syrian Sobber (Mike Anter) lumbers onto the stage to give his rendition of She's Too Fat For Me. (Huh?!!) Following him is that great comedian Billy Peto, who satarizes life in the Reserves. Now another singer (?). Allen LaSpina, gives his version of Eh Cumpari. (Time out for a commercial.) After the commercial Cudney-Taylor Duo revives an old hill-billy tune. Next Audrey Haberkorn kills a song on her accordian. Portraying The Bartender is Charlie Dyke, whom we find behind a bar (naturally.) Now presenting that blonde (?) bombshell — Carol Lewis. (Enough said) In the finale we find Jack Walker and Bill Matty blasting away on their horns. Following that show is What's My Line? People interviewed are Doris Henkel, canteen chaperone; A1 Marggrander, inventor of a new printing process; Dick Eiben, dentist; Tony Jeewok, buck private; John Dumas, author of The Three Muskrats' Ears; and Mel Hussing, famous cinema star. The next voice we hear (she doesn't need a mike) is Bev Danchuk, who lets us in on ail the latest gossip. Joe Podojil is still running away from his last wife. Ron Thrall is wondering whether to be or not to be the steady beau of Weatherbee. And here's a nice juicy scandal for you — Socialite Jerry Veleba elopes with secretary Marlette Nebesar. Incidentally. Catherine Lioi has become engaged to a high-ranking army officer. The final program of the evening is the stock-car races, brought to us through the efforts of Dick Hutter. studio technician. Our announcer is Bob Roper, who apologizes for being late. (On the way he fell out of one of the contestants' cars.) Now the drivers are taking their starting positions, but wait, someone. Number Sixty-Eight. Bob Kovacs, is having trouble with his car. There's the signal! And — they're off. Going around the first Number Thirteen. Elmer Laurence, upsets. This leaves only two contestants. Believe it or not, they're both women. The winner — Joanne ( Speedy ) Tecco. Nancy Stefan crosses the finish line some time later and realizes her Olds isn't so good as it's cracked up to be. (Ha. Ha.) And now signing off for Channel WJFR are Winifred Wiest and Dick Vamos. (Any slams were purely intentional). We may not have a friend .. . Complaints to us you'll send ... To hurt we didn't intend . .. Thank God. this is THE END. Being possessed of an electronic personality, we leave two of the batteries (slightly used) which sparked us to success??? BATTERY I Post I—The Faculty To Miss Fredericksen we leave the problem of teaching i before e except after c. . . to all incoming ninth graders, don't you know. To Miss Jenney we bequeath the plans for a new model wastebasket, a miracle of engineering skill. It automatically spots all gum-chewers and forces them to deposit the offending substance. We leave Roger Taylor's knowledge of boot-legging to Mr. Jacobs to be used at his discretion. A big white orchid goes to both Miss McGinness and Miss Hier. For Mr. Henderson we leave a new batch of amateur chemists to finish mutilating the lab desks. To Mr. Moritz we leave a large stack of empty football uniforms to be refilled. A ten-year's supply of spaghetti goes to Miss Thieme for future German Club picnics. To Mr. Jackson we leave Tony Jeweek's endearing trait of always asking for further instructions. We leave the reminder that there will always be bumptious students to Miss Cherrington. The job of finding seven Mad. singers goes to Mr. Van Nortwick. To Uncle Ray Merriman we leave the warning that he had better patent his Scideptrhod— look at what happened to the Ohio Bell Telephone Company. For Mr. Bryan we leave fond memories of the boys he missed . . . th period yesterday. We never knew he cared. Post II—The Underclassmen We leave rubber caps for the pins used in taking the Ohio State Psychological test. A copy of the Art of Digression goes to all future advanced Latin classes. To future Chemistry II students we leave this warning—watch out when you make soap! We bequeath to future track teams our proud title of being the world's best second-place team. To the ninth graders goes this pleasant thought—There comes a time in every student's life when he too must write an autobiography. To you lucky students who will have Mr. Folkman for English we leave this advice: Date a girl in the same class and together you may be able to figure out in which phase the moon is. BATTERY II Post I—Miscellaneous Jack W. leaves Mary K. Bill Matty leaves his ability to fall up and down the stairs to Eugene Roach. Carol Hofer bequeaths her artistic talent to John Matousek. Judy and Jake leave their formula for happiness to any 12B couple who feels in need of it. Larry Simson's nickname of Cecil B. goes to Paul Spohn. Mike Anter leaves his reducing plan to anyone who wants it—he doesn't!! The second post of Battery II is corroded and is responsible for any flaws in our character. We shall be glad to leave it behind. Page it tyiacUateA Allshouse, Roger H. ...............4232 Anter, Michael Alfred ............ 2055 Baker. Joal Carol ................ 2204 Baldwin. MATHEWS To the Class ol June, 1954: A prominent citizen ol our country recently stated that: Given an atmosphere in which people can and will do their best, there is no limit to what may be accomplished. Never has there been a clearer demonstration of that simple theorem than in this nation's history. Never has so much been accomplished in so short a span of years. And if we preserve for the future the spur of individual initiative, the horizons will be bright indeed. May each of you do your part in promoting and preserving an environment in which all will have the freedom and the will to do their best. In so doing, vou will help insure the continued strength and prosperity of our Sweet land of liberty. Best wishes. Pa«e4 NEIL D. MATHEWS MR. BRYAN MR. FERGUSON TO MISS HIER. MR. BRYAN. AND MR. Banded together we war sat on bein the graduatin class of 1954. Comin from dem thar hills we natcherly didn't know what ta expect at this hi-falootin hi skool. but we soon got inta the groove at that shindig they called the Freshman git-aquainted. Bein are Glamor Gal of '50 Emy Morris war one of the first of us hillbillies ta bee menshuned in the Rhodes Review. Some of are bigger bak-hill brothers— Klem Stibora. Zeke Kaercher. Jerimiah Hartman, and Abe Miller—led are Frosh Feetsball team ta an undefeeted season. Durin that '50 Snow Storm we had quite a bak brakin time diggin areselves out-uv are shacks ta git bak ta that thar place of larnin. We skun round are first semester with a musket bang by havin five of are brothers and sisters. Ben Bugay. Klein” Gross. Sally Krstein, Kali Kuenniger. and Daisy Mae” Lysaght, all on that thar Honor Roll. Havin a vary talented class we natcherly had many brothers and sisters enter inta the musik contest. Among those comin out on top. was Annie Reisland on the pyany and Yodi Young on that horn of his'n. With a hole skool yeer behind us and the promises of the future we went bak ta the hills fer a three month rest. Before acomin bak ta this hi-falootin hi-skool we went down Missouri way and cotched up Coz Osburn. Now that we're not the unlarned hillbillies we wuz when we corned; and no longer con-cidered the shoeless class, we wuz well on are way to being Sopomors. We now had the qualificashuns of enterin the club shacks of are choice. Them as who culd take it wuz inishiated inta Girls Leaders Daisy Schubert. Caroli Green, and Sally Krstein. The date is June 10. 1984; the place. Cleve-landgrad. The capitalistically oppressed peoples of the world have been gloriously liberated by the glorious communist armies for the glory of comrade premier John Youngski. beloved dictator of the world. This world revolution was carried out by the use of state physicist Dick Lindermano-vich's invention—The Tell-a-Traitor. a television device which enables the communists to spy on any person in the world, at any time, anywhere, and in any condition! From within the high forbidding stone walls of the American Kremlin (formerly the Fascist High School Rhodes) the Tell-a-Traitor is scanning the world to find the whereabouts of some capitalistic fugitives of the June Class of 1954. These traitors have already ben tried, convicted. and sentenced according to the best communist methods. Only two jobs have yet to be done, apprehension and liquidation. On hand to carry out these two dangerous assignments are the biggest, strongest, roughest groups of the Clevelandgrad secret police: Phillip Pinnowski, Jim Kammerov, Irene Klepitchski, Gloria Monockyovich, and Jean Zimmermanstoi. As the Tell-a-Traitor finds a Rhodes Trotskyite, Bryanite, or Titoist, these officers with ruthless cunning will capture him, arrest him, and drag him off to the deep, dark, dank, and dusty dungeons of the cellars of the Kremlin where he will get a treatment of communist liquidation. It will be remembered that here one of the most glorious victories of the revolution was won when 50 Rhodes teachers were exterminated by “red infiltrators Harry Hartello-vich.
