Three hundred ond fifteen strong, we in-voded the reolms of Jomes Ford Rhodes; proud, shy, afraid, wondering, concealing our hesitancy, we braved the world of scrutinizing faces of the older ones who had gathered to watch our coming, From the height of eighth grode senior we have descended to the lowly rank of high school flat. It's much to bear. We were greeted in the auditorium by Mr. Mathews, (as upperclassmen we'll learn to speak familiarly of him as NEIL D. ) principal of 5100 Biddulph Avenue, Miss Hier, dean of girls, and Mr. Effron, the deon of boys. They spoke to us reassuringly and yet at the some time, warningly. We sat in reverent stillness os they divided us in half, halved the holves, halved the quarters, and then os eighths we were delivered to the eight separate classrooms which were to be our havens between second and third periods for semesters to come. It was here that we began to breathe once more; here that we were startled by our introduction to the bong, bong, bong, bong .... bong, bong, bong bong, .... bong, bong, of homeroom announcements; here that we filled out the first of a four year endless stream of lost name first program cards. This, this was the beginning. SEPTEMBER 15, 1945: There is not a swimming pool on the roof. I do not want to buy an elevator pass. Someone had a friend who gave us all the answers. But we do wish we had memorized our programs when they were in one big, rather than fifty-three smoll pieces! It's sofer, we find, to look for classrooms without any generously offered assistance. SEPTEMBER 19, 1945: The 9A's and sophomores do try so hord! Their effort is lost on us, however. We've learned to distinguish the upper from the lower clossmen.
