JAMES FORD RHODES HIGH SCHOOL Published by the Senior Class, January, 1946 Members of the Class of January, 1946: You are leaving high school in an age the symbol of which is the atomic bomb. At no other time in the history of the world has straight thinking been so important. The future of this atomic age is of course unknown. You will have a share of the responsibility in determining whether that future will be one of the progress of civilization or of its destruction. Only as you think in terms of one world and the rights and privileges of all mankind. will your life-contribution help to prevent disaster. It is our hope that your four years at Rhodes High School have helped you to acquire some worthwhile information upon which to base your thinking, and that you have been encouraged in the critical use of that information. May you discharge your individual responsibilities with confidence and courage. Sincer.ely, NEIL D. MATHEWS Four MR. JACOBS For educating us in the fundamentals of Physics. For serving as the boys’ homeroom teacher for the majority of their high school days, For these routine jobs well done; We are grateful to you For assuming the responsibility of class adviser during our pre-senior days. For cheerfully giving of your time to chaperon our class social events. For an understanding ear lent to our various problems. For advice to our class organization, For willingly giving advice to all who sought it, For these services “above and beyond” the ordinary expected duties of a teacher; We, the “Class of ’46, respectfully dedicate our yearbook to you. Our sincere hope as we leave is that you will continue your excellent service to our high school and its students. The best of luck to you, Mr. Jacobs. Those four years we spent with you were just crammed with experiences which we will never forget. Why. we still remember the cold blistery morning in January '42 when we were left on your doorstep. (just 183 more gray hairs for you.) There were way too many of us for you to care for personally, so you gave the responsibility to Aunt Sorge. Aunt Kenyon, and Uncle Jacobs- (Orchids to our homeroom teachers for their swell care and co-operation.) After the humiliation of being called flats no longer reddened our faces, and the fears of being lost had left us completely, we began to feel at home. The Junior Journal was our main source of 9th grade gossip, slander, and sports. (Ethel Pietsch won the title of editor, but we know the only journalism she did was to staple seven pages together once a month.) As the first year came to a close, we wept farewell tears for our five brothers who left for the West Tech “Workhouse.” Slowly our male population was decreasing. ALONG CAME JONES (Annamae) : Look high! Look high! And you will see. The new sister of our family. The girls were waking up to the fact that if a “man was to be had. track tactics would have to be used. Their skill was tested at a Sadie Hawkins day dance in November.. .Lillian “Moonbeam McSwine Textoris. ve-e-ry short skirt and all, created the Dogpatch atmosphere. (She sure did! And Willy has been her Lil Abner ever since.) The hardwood gym floor became used to the ''lightfooted'' Eleanor Kratky and Carol Prahl as they regularly socked the volley-ball- Marge Say took her bow to a bit of glory as '44 track queen. Our eyes still see the flash of those bright blue and yellow sweaters that were sported every Thursday. Alan Braun. Chuck Haak, Don Eaton, and Hank Stickney had fraternized. Result: Rhoda Hi Y. One sunny fall day a cloud darkened our lives. It was our new sister. Elsie Pyeha. who had come to hang her hat on our family tree. She either knew the right people or had the “nose for news because she held the honors for being the only member of our family on the “Review. “No honor conferred by this school excells that represented by this society. During the 11th and 12th grades the following members of our family were inducted into the National Honor Society: Lil Textoris. Neil Richardson. Ursula Eisner, John Oshchypok, Tom Ziegler. Alan Braun. Bob Schmotzer, Marion Rahlfs, Alice Chaloner. and Bev Brown. (Congrats!) The girls shone in a tax stamp contest, after which the boys threw a party. Some spread! Thanks, fellas! Deloris Bernaur did the honors of track queen attendant for the spring '45 track meet- Uncle Jacobs lent his hand to help us organize, a hand which later came home from a picnic with one broken finger. In the spring of '45 we rushed the time with our formal a bit early. Four girls and seventeen boys (sorry we can't mention their names) decided to seek their fortunes earlier in life, as they left us eighteen weeks early. But still more boys left! V. Buescher. R. Kiehl, W. Block, R. Jordon. K. Farson. F. Cleber. H. Laugesen, R. Olsen. J. Hirt, L. Phillips. J- Sawczak. and K. Paddock marched off under the piercing eye of Mr- Draftboard. Eighteen We came back to school that fall with shining faces. We had seen the summer through with the ending of the war. — Now that the world would be organized again, our family began the same project. 56 girls and 26 boys (look who rates) responded to the hammer of John Oshchypok's gavel. Lil Textoris took the position on her Boss’s knee, as Alan Braun did the boss-assistance- At the same time Mr. Ziegter retired since his son Tom held the money-bag. TOOT-TOOT Hot lips Zaykowski took his stand. As the rag-man trumpeter of Rhodes High Band. Merrit Bader. Bob Snow, and Edmond Trytek were found drinking in the ’45 football season training rules. They chose Lil Textoris and Marge Say to reign as their queens. Of course we had an informal, and a picnic, and a shindig thrown by the 12B’s. And yes. we graduated! Maybe we’re just telling tales out of school, but we’ve enjoyed living with you. With tears in our eyes we left. The class of '46 RHODES' MARCHING SONG Let’s sing to the sky The song of Rhodes High-We’re all for one. And one for all. Our motto is to do or die. Come on. Blue and White. Keep up the good fight. Raise high the colors All will see. We’ll march right on to victory. Nineteen CLASS PROPHECY ft is the year 1952. Just six years ago the best class ever to leave JAMES FORD RHODES graduated. Yes. it's the year 1952. The age of helicopters, glass houses, atom hair permanents, rocket ships to the moon, free junior colleges, no more ration stamps, and nylon wigs has just begun. Our class is very famous and prosperous, so we'd like to tell you about them. JOHN (the Badman of Brooklyn) OSHCHYPOK has just rubbed out his gun moll RUTH WEEKLY. It seems DAVE RISHAW was the third man in the triangle. ELEANOR KRATKY has married some luscious fellow on East 1 39th. MERRITT BADER is now a father. He went to Yale to join his buddy Ed Pivcivich, but he decided college wasn’t for him. He soon married. Whom? Rumors say it was MILDRED ROSEMANN. (But. . . .then again, you can’t tell about those things.) After her glorious experiences on the RHODES REVIEW. ELSIE (L.C.P.A) PYEHA is now the editor of the Brooklyn News. She just fired JOAN KELLSIC because she found Joan’s camera in the waste basket. VIVIAN (the girl with all the men) WEINTZ married the day after commencement. She flipped a coin to see who the lucky fella would be. It turned out to be Tom Wilkes. FAE ROTH isn’t wearing that certain ring on her third finger left hand because (as always) she was late, even for her own wedding, and Shorty Simon thought she had jilted him. LILLIAN (the brain) TEXTORIS married Willy Toennis after graduating from Flora Stone Mather. MARJORIE ANN SAY received her B.A. degree (Beauty of America)at Miami U. two years ago. That entitled her to become a professional movie star. In her first picture she played opposite Dana Andrews Lucky girl. In her second picture, opposite JOHN WISNIEWSKI. Lucky guy. ETHEL (Peaches) PIETSCH has a well-established position as private secretary in the Latko Steel Corporation. We wonder if she sits on her boss' lap. She still goes with Elmer. Their romance is just in the blooming stage. BEVERLY (the rabbit in the Fraternal Order of the Gophers and Rabbits) BROWN is a gym teacher at Lincoln High. NEIL (Trackman) RICHARDSON teaches at Lincoln, too. .... Romance. DOROTHY VOGELSANG is the chief acrobatic attraction with Barnum Cr Bailey. AN-NAMAE JONES is also in the circus. She married a midget. They’re the long and short of it. JEANNE (Angel) LEWIS is now a social worker. She has charge of all juvenile delinquents and tells them crime doesn’t pay. At present one of her offenders is VERE PERRIN’S daughter. Doesn’t fake after her mother, docs she? Ruth RUSSELL is just one more Smith in the telephone book. DOLORES LUZIUS is still so shy she has to go into the closet to change her mind. MARION RAHLFS and EVELYN CHRISTIAN have had so much experience in dime stores that they have started a chain of their own. Their motto is ’’Spending is Saving at ROC (Rahlfs and Christian) Stores.” LOIS BULSIEWICZ, EDNA ZAPP. and DORIS TES-KE are stock girls there. (That Distributive Education course surely did them some good.) DOROTHY FINDLAY is engaged to Ray Notke. She doesn’t want to get married yet because she wants a double wedding with Dick and Viv. CLORIA (Glo-Girl) ALEXANDER married her high school beau Dick Frank. This was real love at first sight. Of course the million dollars she won in a beauty contest had nothing to do with their marriage He retired the day after. AGNES BARILKA has taken over Miss Davis' job teaching shorthand at J.F.R. ALAN BRAUN has finally made the Metropolitan Opera. He’s a curtain puller. DORIS CLENDENEN and DOROTHY CROUCH are now in the service of their country. They’re Navy wives. ALBERTA KOSIBA has settled down and married some handsome young man from California. His name is Van Johnson. OLGA KULNITSKY is very jealous because she got Jerry Colona. ALICE CHALONER and Jim Skcllenger are now engaged in tilling the soil She made a farmer of him. DON WOLF is the only man in the U.S.A. with a good excuse to be called a wolf. DORIS WIDOWSKI is now second girl in the first row in the famous WALTER PAVLAK Follies of 1952. Attending the Follies regularly is MELVIN NEEL. IRMA (Ceorgeousl BADEMAN has just won first prize in the National Auto Races of '52. When asked to say a few words at the mike, she said: ”1 got all my riding experience in good old Brooklyn. RAY ABRAM and LES EIERDAM are collaborating on an Atom smasher to smash the smashed atom. Mr. Baker is their Lab assistant. ARLENE (Coke bottle shape--------Huba! Huba’l OLSEN is the world’s greatest drum majorette. She married the kid who belonged to the Latin ring she wore. CATHERINE MATUCK married some fellow from Collinwood and is very happy. She owns a beauty shoppe in Brooklyn and hears all the latest gossip. EMMA KOCSIS is one of her best customers. She gets her hair dyed ebony black. Twenty CARL PONSTINCIE is now posing for Charles Atlas ads. You know. . .the before and after........Well, he's the before. CHUCK HAAK is the current Charles Boyer of Brooklyn. His line is Come vid me to the Creek's. FRANK KONCZ is in the United States Senate. GRACE BLESSING now runs a Bureau for Missing Men on the alimony she receives from her first five husbands. GLORIA GRIMM and BETTY CORNELL, after their long training in Distributive Education, are now peddling Fuller Brushes from door to door. CARYL FITCH is head announcer on station W.B.O.E. (We're Bored of Education) telling all the little kiddies to Mind your P’s and Q's or you'll wind up in my shoes.” DORIS TESKE. after many years of experimenting, finally found out why a kiss over the telephone is the same as a straw hat. It isn't felt. RAY FILL still doesn't know the difference between an egg and an elephant. (He'd be a heck of a person to send to the store) BOB SCHMOTZER, after all these years, has finally retired and settled down with Sally Ann. (Now every day is Sundae.) JEANNE HOOLEY cut off her hands so she could play the piano in shorthand. RICHARD (Kookala) ZAYKOWSKI'S trumpet has made him famous. Millions and millions of people read about him every day. He's Dick Tracy's latest character Blownose. RAY LISOWSKI is taking Benny Goodman's place on the Palace Stage. On the bill with him is the sister act of DELORES and Bubbles BERNAUER. PAUL BUCHYNSKY is now flying helicopters at college. He picks up women on the fly and then drops them.... on their campus. RUTH (the voice of experience) SCHOLTZ now has her own radio program. It runs something like this: This is the case of D.E. (DON EATON) I'm engaged to a girl but I'm in love with her three sisters. Tell me, Miss Scholtz, vat should I do?? DOROTHY BLAHA won a trophy for a new two-mile record for the state. (It seems she was running away from one of the West Tech cross country boys) ETTA WITTEMAN and URSULA ELSNER are now professional horsewomen. They are co-starring as Clementine in George Seedhouse's latest musical. (Etta's the head.) BETTY KALBRUNNER just published her first book. The Life of Elizabeth Kalbrun-ner, or ”1 Went Around with More Men Than a Revolving Door in a Department Store Does Women on Bargain Day. One of her contemporaries is ROSE HENNIGER. who wrote Rose of Hennigcr Road or Dead End. NELSON NICOLAUS just unraveled the mystery of why SHELDON MENGER put iodine on his pay check. His salary was cut. EDMUND (Buzz) TRYTEK'S ambitions have come true. He has a ten-year contract with the New York Yankees. He's bat boy. TOM ZEIGLER has been on easy street ever since graduation. Remember all that money we paid in before graduating? Well!!! CAROL PRAHL is now proving BOB SNOW'S theory (obtained from the American Weekly ) that radar is a sure fire method of locating fish. (What better bait could he use?) RALPH STIPLEY made a non-stop flight to the North Pole and back. He wanted to save three cents postage on his letter to Santa Claus. JIM ANDERSON now shows science movies at the Cleveland Public Library. One of his most ardent followers is FLORENCE KALINA, who goes in for the more cultured Side of life. HENRY STICKNEY is still polishing his Chevy to take Mary Ellen to his annual drum concert. (She expects him to propose any year now.) The End Twenty-one CLASS WILL OF JANUARY '46 We. the senior class of January. 1946. being of sound mind and cadaver. and being also possessed of certain various items, traits, and peculiarities. which we wish to endow to up and coming Rhodians; do hereby bequeath. distribute, and administer them, in this, our last will and testament. Elevator I up (1) Ah. yes — you lucky dogs, we leave! up (21 Mr. Effron will be glad to know that that long line of well known colleagues who visit him for a friendly chat after homeroom will be thinned out upon our departure. Elevator II down (1) To Mr- Seedhouse. our developer of the fine functioning physique. we leave the task of thinking up more grunt and groan calisthenics for future senior gym classes. down (2) Merritt (Varsity Limp) Bader leaves his strains and sprains to any third-string player who is willing to go through the same punishment he did to get them. Elevator III up (1) Emma Kocsis graciously condescends to publicize, (under very slight pressure), the secret of everlasting blondeness. up (2) Ruth Russell leaves the daring upsweep of her first year to anyone with courage enough to wear it. Elevator IV down (1 ) Hank Sticknev. our beater of the better tom-tom, leaves his qualifications as a drummer???? and medal for same to that person who is willing to give his Chevy the same high polish that Hank did. down (2) Mr. Vannorsdall is left with a moth-eaten line and backfield full of gaps and holes — which he shall have to fill with whatever material is left. Elevator V Between Floors — Dorothy Vogelsang will be glad to get rid of her snort-like laugh. Good reason, so they tell us. for calling her Piggy.” All who are interested should see Dorothy. Evelyn Christian, Etta Witteman. and Grace Blessing leave distributive education to those who care to distribute- They don't. Elevator VI Bargain Basement — Admiral Eierdam got seasick after the 1 1 th grade, and leaves his nickname to a prospective Annapolis entrant. But only if that entrant possesses a sturdier stomach than does the said Eierdam. Elevator VI Allout — Skyline Bar Tenor Don Eaton and baritone Alan Braun are especially recommended to prospective vocalists. They know all about tantalizing palate-tickling tonics to tune up tired tonsils. To explain our articles and sections: Even as an elevator has its ups, downs, and breakdowns. from bargain basement to top floor, so have we. the graduating class of January 46. had our ups and downs.
