Valedictorian Marjorie Brown Evelyn Peters Dan Canute Leonard Skowron Jack Held — 5 — MEMBERS OF THE CLASS OF JANUARY. 1944 Throughout most of your high-school life the world has been at war. It is difficult for us to think about anything else. Often, however, we lose sight of the things for which we are fighting, and often we take for granted the blessings which we have in this America of ours Most of the people of the world today are hungry, underclothed, and lack shelter and other advantages which we consider essential to decent living. Lack of sacrifice on our part easily could place us with that majority. Our ambition should be to do all in our power during and after the war to keep the desirable elements of our own way of life and to help the less fortunate people of the world improve the conditions under which they now are forced to live. To this end, I extend my best wishes to each of you. May you do your share. Sincerely. NEIL D. MATHEWS — 6 — Ensign Andrew Moran By dedicating this Year Book to Ensign Andrew Moran, we. the Class of January, 1944, wish to show our appreciation for all that he has done to aid us. Once coaching our boys on the football field and the basketball floor, he now fights shoulder to shoulder with some of them on another victorious team. — 7 — ART A. After twelve long years, free from the unmitigated torture of teachers, tests, and homework. While celebration seems appropriate, the past has instead recalled those memories which chronicle the history of the Class of '44. January 28. 1941, brands that fateful day when one hundred sixty-seven of us. representing Wm. Rainey Harper. Benjamin Franklin, and Our Lady of Good Counsel, first embarked on our quest for knowledge within your walls. The ill-fated faculty members sentenced to suffer our companionship were Miss Davis. Miss Lanese, Mr. Baker, and Mr. Henderson. Unlike preceding flats not even a 9B party graced our entrance into the perilous years ahead. Destined to win every competitive game which saw their participation were Jeanne Kestner. Dorothy Price, Eleanor Rudnick. Dorothy Roichel. Eleanor Wegryn. Ruth Arnold. Anne Seman, and June Bauer of 103. Typewriters and powder puffs constitute no relationship; however, 216 fashioned contrary notions. Sophomores and three more years. As such, a select group of students, of whom Gertrude Knerly and Dorothy Kobylak were but a few, found geometry so captivating as to spend subsequent semesters in its clutches. With those famous words “Wouldn't that grab ya. Dan Canute visited the Rhodes Review. Half-days-off joined the list of missing privileges. The Baker Brats” slaughtered the Henderson Hot Shots in the 10B championship baseball game. At the Greater Cleveland Junior and Senior Music Contest, Vera Albers and her baton twirled their way into first honors, while Carol Tubbesing captured first place in the tuba and third in the vocal solo. Juniors, oh boy! Rhodes’ four-mile relay team, two of the runners being Bud Gardner and Cordon Cox. bore victoriously from the West Tech Relays, the Western Reserve Trophy. Ed Jirik and Dick Renker saw action on the basketball floor; Dick Dierker, Herb Rath, Jim Huebner. Mike Hricz, and Alfred Aiello won jerseys on the varsity squad; and George Cunningham caught up with Coach Holden's tracksters. Minstrel Show, plus trumpet, plus Wesley Wittich, equal fame. What patriotic individuals gallantly rendered their services for the Rhodes vs. Parma scrap drive (incidentally, we placed second)? Answer: Lawrence Luciano, Ed Contofalsky. Dick Dierker, Carl Blaha. Bob Boltz. and Herb Rath Virtually non-existent were Evelyn Peters. Marjorie Brown, Ruth Bugay, Evelyn Klepitch, Dan Canute, and Jack Slaby. as congratulations stood in order for their induction into the National Honor Society. A combined American History and English class enjoyed a brief life. Under the leadership of our 1 IA officers Ed Jirik. Ed Contofalsky. Margaret McKenna, and Cordon Cox, we 44’s legally united. Our class had its first picnic during this term. Since meat rationing had not yet been introduced, we had an ovcrsupply of hot dogs. With the advent of our 12B term, Rhodes encountered many unprecedented occurrences. It was during this semester that Mr. Henderson departed for the Marines. Because many of our boys would register under the eighteen-year-old draft bill and be in the service before January, we decided to have a premature senior prom. The day was set for June 5. 'Mid the rustle of grass skirts and 'neath the spreading palms of the Hawaiian scenery, we danced for several never-to-be-forgotten hours. Though Military Preparedness Training was the title for the boy's gym course. Physical Ruin, was a far more descriptive epithet. Terrific is the adjective for Don Owens. Alfred Aiello, and Lawrence Luciano’s portrayals as females in Uncle Sam’s Serenade. Promotion to track captain of the '43 team was handea Ed Jirik. Walking on air were Cecelia Wronko. Eleanor Rudnick. Howard Wittmer, Grace Urban, Mildred Martin, Gertrude Hoffman, Leonard Skowron and Roy Luthardt as they joined the rank and file of the National Honor Society. Then, the home stretch. For the second consecutive term. Alfred Aiello presided as class president. Millie Martin held the editorship of the Rhodes Review, and senior exams exhausted our brain supply. Jean Goss, Jean Wick, John Kane. Ralph Palsha. and Jack Held were inducted into the National Honor Society. And now the finish. Ninety-two of us. four years older, and supposedly four years wiser, taking leave of your hospitality with the sigh on our lips, It was a tough fight, Mom, but I won. Thankfully yours. A REMINISCENT SENIOR — 18 — FACULTY And here we present — the faculty, smiling, no doubt, at the thought of our mass departure. Seriously speaking, however, it is with regret, and the hope that nothing but pleasant memories of our sojourn here remain with them, that we take our leave. — 19 — NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY Character, scholarship, leadership, and service are the four fundamental principles of the National Honor Society and form the basis upon which membership into the organization is determined. The highest conceivable honor awarded any student is induction into this association; a representation of attainment unequaled in praise or esteem. The National Honor Society symbolizes a successful accomplishment of ability and effort during ones high-school career. — 20 — GIRL S' LEADERS BOY S’ LEADERS — 21 — CLASS PROPHECY Fellow Angels, we are gathered here today for the conduction of a most solemn ritual. As heavenly bodies, we find if necessary from time to time to vote on a group of earthly characters, who. having been recently deceased, must be appointed to our realm of Eternal Paradise or to—to—well—er—you know where. . . . As Chief Recorders in the Book of Judgment, we have discovered that a group of new arrivals, totaling ninety-two. wish admittance to our Happy Hunting Grounds. As yet, they are still awaiting our verdict outside Pearly Gates Numbers A and B. It is only fair to them, therefore, that we dispense with the usual formal voting by raising the right wing of each Angel, and complete the judgment as quickly as possible. As I call each character by name, will he please rise, face the Pearly Gates, and remain standing at his seat while I read a short description of him—and the assembled Officers of Judgment look him or her over. Now don't be nervous, there can be nothing in these thumbnail biographies that could possibly lead to blackmail. We've checked! A.D. It is our final endeavor to put on paper our attitudes toward the future and our recollections of past experiences. Though our class has been disrupted to a large extent by the war. we shall earnestly try to recapture the spirit of our original class. We seniors, grown wise in our four years of cerebrum-disturbing school life, being approximately eighteen years of age and possessing sanity (we think, or better, we hope), do hereby devise, bequeath, and otherwise donate (or shall we say, dispose of) the following project to our underclassmen and to our faculty, who have been very understanding with our patience-challenging class. Section I MUSIC Article I When we seniors bid adieu. Miss Keller and Mr. Gerkowski will find many unoccupied places left them in their various musical organizations. Article II To the A Capella Choir we leave vacant places amid the soprano, alto, tenor, and bass Being twenty in number, the names arc too numerous to mention. Article III Of the nine voices now in the Girls' Triple Trio, five will be gone after Margaret Strung. Marjorie Brown, Carol Tubbesing. Mildred Richards, and Barbara Ray graduate. Article IV The Clee Club will also consider themselves unlucky, because thirteen of their songsters will depart in January '44. Article V When Vera Albers graduates, she leaves her job as leader of the band to anyone capable of stepping as high. Six other players leave their reserved seats at the football games and other musical programs. Article VI Who will take Howie Wittmers place as head noon-movie operator? Could it be his up-and-projecting kid brother? Section II ATHLETICS Article I The athletic senior girls, most of them already graduated from summer school, made the enviable record of winning every contest that was offered them by the sport department, and thus leave behind an unbeatable record. Article II To Mr. Vannorsdall we leave the hopes, worries and pleasures!?) of future grid teams. We also leave him the task of filling the nine well-worn uniforms of Rath. Rcnker, Aiello. Huebner, Boltz. Keppler. Robbins, and Dierkcr, Zep. Article III To the school, we leave fond memories of Rhodes’s first undefeated grid season (1942). Article IV To the up-and-coming grid stars, we leave the pleasures of spending many hours in the dust bowl. Article V To Mr. Holden we leave vacancies (and rhat's about all we leave him) in both track and cross country. He will have to find new boys to replace the lettermen Brandt. Bright. Cox, Cunningham. Palsha, Schroeder. to whom Uncle Sam will soon be a favorite relative. If nothing else, we will leave him his retreaded tires, and a few likely looking prospects. Section III SOCIALLY SPEAKINC Article I Jim Huebner and Alfred Aiello don't especially mind leaving school, after all Ruth Arnold and Vera Albers are graduating, too. Article II We seniors leave behind pleasant memories of having participated in the innovation of having had the traditionally 1 2A formal held while still 128's. Article III When graduating, we seniors will leave behind a iinx that seems to have been following us all through our school years, that is. the jinx of always having been used as guinea pigs for the teachers. As soon as our class reached a certain level, it seemed as if just then the teachers wanted to try somethin new in that course. Article IV In parting, we seniors must admit that school hasn't been too hard to digest. In fact, we have really enjoyed every particle of it. Having fulfilled all requirements to the best of our ability, we humbly bequeath this last will and testament to our school. — 25 — THE SENIOR CLASS Rhodes Hymn Dear old Rhodes High, Thy wisdom lights our paths. Thy friendships true stay with us to the last. We stand united in thy purpose true. Loyal and faithful to the White and Blue Rhodes Marching Song Let's sing to the sky The song of Rhodes High; We're all for one and one for all Our motto is to do or die. Come on Blue and White. Keep up the good fight. Raise high the colors, all will see. We march right on to victory. — 26 — AUTOGRAPHS
