DIEHL Dean of Men As distinguished Southwestern graduates, the three Deans of Southwestern pictured here are highly qualified to direct the college and guide the students to whose best interest they have dedicated themselves. They have helped each student surpass his previous self in knowledge, in courage, in personality and social development, and in his faith in Cod and in his fellow man. They have understood our problems, assisted us with patience, listened to our complaints, inspired us with confidence, en- couraged us when we were disheartened, and thus, enhanced our chance for success. Dr. and Mrs. Rhodes have opened their gracious home to all Southwestern students and rtany friends of the col- lege, in fact, one of the first and one of the last social gatherings of each class is held on West Drive. The Rhodes' hos- pitality and genuine interest in every college student illustrates the unique, warm relationship that exists between the students and faculty of Southwestern. Below: Dr. and Mrs. Rhodes T ,..5..-- esse e .. .5 .1 wi 15-12: M555 . 1-fs K . DR. PEYTON NALLE RHODES President of the College A true educator not only inspires his students to develop their abilities during their college years but provides them with a foundation to continue the learn- ing process after graduation. He does this by encouragement, by kindness, by understanding guidance, but most of all, by example. Such an educator is Dr. Peyton Nalle Rhodes, President of Southwestern since 1949. During Dr. Rhodes' administration campus facilities have nearly doubled, with the addition of three residence halls, the Mallory gymnasium, the Burrow Library, the Moore Infirmary, the Catherine Burrow Refectory, the Richard Halliburton Memorial Tower and tower building, Tuthill Hall, the president's home, and the proposed Thomas W. Briggs Student Center. One of the nation's outstanding programs of adult education has been developed at Southwestern, and because of his leadership in this field he has been named president of the University Council on Education for Public Responsibility. He is much in de- mand as a speaker, committeeman, chairman, ambassador, and official for numerous organizations. The confidence which Dr. Rhodes places in the ability of each Southwestern student, and his concept that success is not the exception, but the rule may be cherished as prized possessions by those whose lives he has enriched as college President.
