When the 1958 football season came to a close, the Lynx of Southwestern were proud possessors of a 5-3 record. Coach Rick Mays and his fine staff of coaches and scouts should be congratulated for molding a winning team out of a nucleus of dependable veterans and group of green freshmen. As the season went by, the team gained more experience and be- came not only a fine team to watch, but a winning team as well. The Lynx got off to a flying start by being good “mudders.”’ In the first game of the year Southwestern edged a 7-6 vic- tory from the Millsaps Majors in Jackson. It was a defensive battle from the start, and Southwestern’s only score came in the hird quarter on a breakaway run of 65 yards by Hammett. The margin of differ- ence, however, was the perfect extra point kicked by Davidson on the rain-soaked ield. The Majors scored a TD early in the ourth quarter and went for two points by trying to run through the Southwestern ine. The middle of the Southwestern line, the group most directly responsible for Southwestern’s good season, showed their ability by stopping the play and saving the game. Southwestern played their first home game against the Mississippi College Choctaws on Fargason Field. The Lynx were out to scalp the Indians from the start. The Cats scored in every quarter to accomplish a feat which had not been done in recent Southwestern football his- tory, beating both Millsaps and Missis- sippi College, the two Jackson teams, in the same year. Weeks started the scoring by tackling a Choctaw punter behind the goal for a safety in the first quarter. The score was 9-0 at halftime as Davidson gathered in a pass from Echols with 30 seconds remaining. In the third quarter Echols scored on an option play, then Hammett grabbed a stray M. C. pass and ran it back 48 yards for a touchdown. Davidson added another extra point. In the fourth quarter Gay threw a short pass to Davidson for the fourth Lynx TD of the game. The Southwestern line again proved its worth by holding Mississippi College to one touchdown. I Fowlkes, E. Tollison, G. The next Friday night the Cats jouz- neyed over to Conway, Arkansas and met the Hendrix Warriors. The Lynx took the third in a row by mixing a fine defensive game with a hard charging offense. Clin- ton hit pay dirt twice in the game with Echols and Jerden each scoring after sus- tained drives. Davidson added two extra points to aid the Southwestern cause. The Lynx line, growing more powerful and fearless each game, held the Warriors to 76 yards on the ground, and 63 yards in the air as the Lynx copped a 26-7 victory. Riding a three-game winning streak, the Lynx faced the always tough Praying Colonels from Centre. It was a fine fall day and a large crowd jammed Fargason Field to watch the unbeaten Lynx. South- western scored first. Early in the game Echols scored from one yard out on a quarterback sneak but the attempted ex- tra point was wide. From this point until the waning moments of the half, a terrific defensive battle took place. A blocked punt set up a Colonel TD and Centre made the extra point good. Following the kickoff Landers carried the pigskin all the way giving the home fans a beautiful dis- play of broken field running. Yet all was in vain as Southwestern received a pen- alty. The halftime score of 7-6 was the final score. Southwestern could move the ball with ease to the Centre 20-yard line but then the Cats could not keep their steam. In the closing seconds of the game Echols called a jump pass to Weeks which almost connected. However the game end- ed shortly. It was a magnificent struggle but a hard one to lose. Truscott, G. Ask anybody on the football team; it’s a long way to Texas and when you get there, it is short. After a sixteen-hour trip by bus and train on Friday, the Lynx just could not get started on Saturday. On a very hot, dry day the Kangaroos took ad- vantage of the weather to riddle the Lynx with passes, five of which went for TD's. The lone Lynx tally came in the fourth quarter when Ronnie Smith hit pay dirt on Ps @ Rowland, G. a ten-yard jaunt. A tired, indented team returned from Austin determined to take advantage of an extra week of rest. In- juries were allowed to heal, and tired muscles got a chance to rest. The Lynx picked Howard for its next victim. Fargason Field was wet and there was still a slight drizzle as the game be- gan. However, the Lynx were out to prove that the Bulldogs of Howard were all wet. The game started slowly with both teams: playing cautiously in the first quarter. In the second period the Lynx began to Stowers, C. move. Echols scored six points on a keep- er and then passed for two more. Fitz- gerald recovered a Howard fumble that set up a TD pass play from Echols to Smith on a fourth-down situation. In the second half Coach Mays substituted freely and the Lynx scored another six points when Echols went over on a line plunge. Howard scored two TD's in the last four minutes of the game as every Lynx player got into the game. Echols, Q.B. Burge, G. Reed, F.B. The Little Giants of Wabash proved a stubborn foe but the running and passing of Echols spoked the Lynx to a 28-20 win. The first half was a defensive stalemate except for a 60-yard drive engineered by the Lynx with Gillis plunging over for the score. All the rest of the Lynx scoring was done in the third quarter when South- western scored three TD’s—the first field goal of the season. Clinton scored two of the touchdowns, one on a pass from Echols and another on a 10-yard sprint. Echols scored the other TD on a line plunge set up by a pass interrupted by Davidson. In the final game of the season South- western journeyed to Sewanee to meet the powerful Tigers. The Tigers went into the game undefeated and came out of the game with an undefeated season. Early in the first quarter Southwestern moved the ball well but this was short-lived, as the tables soon turned. The Lynx were beaten by the truly great Sewanee team 47-0. However all was not dark. Tollison and Oxley turned in brilliant performances to keep the score down as the fired-up Sewanee team moved on. All in all, it was a fine season. In every game fine performances were turned in. The Lynx had an exciting team to watch as they were always dangerous and could run, pass, and play defensive with equal skill. For this winning season, which was only the second since World War II, we should recognize a group of individuals who knew the real value of team work. McCormick, H.B. Webb, E. 1 Stoakes, F.B. Second row: Nance, Hixon, Curtis, MacQueen, McMillion. Third row: Hughes, Hartzog, Cornish, Arman, Minter. Waller, F. Co-Captain Harris, G. Bertrand, C. Hixon, F. Arman, G. The 1958-59 Lynx basketball team completed the season with an overall record of 11-13. However, the record does not tell the entire story. All eleven Lynx victories were won on the home court, and the Lynx had a bad year on the road. The home fans had a chance to see the fast moving Lynx win eleven while only losing four in Mallory Memorial Gymnasium. Among these games were thrillers such as the 82-80 win over Union, the 67-64 win over Birmingham Southern, and the heart- breaking 60-59 loss to Delta State in the last three seconds. The season was an uphill battle for the Lynx as they got off to a slow start and had to fight to even up the record. In the last part of the season the Lynx rode a hot streak of 8 wins and 5 losses, a considerable improvement over the 2-5 recor before Christmas. : In the first game of the season, the Lynx journeyed to Con- way, Arkansas to meet Arkansas State Teachers. Although the Lynx were beaten 86-80, this was not the greatest loss. Joe Boals and Bill Harris, two of Southwestern’s mainstays, were injured. Boals, co-captain, suffered a sprained ankle which slowed him down until after the Christmas holidays. Harris received a fracture of the left wrist which bothered him all season, but which kept him out of only a few games. Momo Waller, the other co-captain, was out with illness for six weeks before the season began so he was not ready to go full speed until after the holidays. However, one of the sure signs of progress in basketball at Southwestern was the increased depth the team showed when injuries occurred. Other men capable of fine performances filled in for the injured Lynx players. The first signs of an ever-improving Lynx team was their fine victories in the Dixie Tournament. Entering the play as a decidedly underdog team, they stomped Sewanee 67-57. They went on to crush Union 85-76 in probably the finest game the Lynx played all year. As added honors beside the champion- ship trophy, Waller and Boals were named to the All-Tourna- ment team. Also, Boals was selected as Most Valuable Player in the tournament as his fine outside shooting and ball han- dling sparked the Lynx to both victories. The season seemed to move by quickly with the Lynx play- ing consistently good ball on the home court. Each game was filled with excitement as the Lynx fielded its most colorful team in years. Also, the Lynx record was one of its best in recent years. At the close of the season Southwestern and its basketball team were host to the Pre-Conference Tournament. Again the Lynx went in as underdogs and made a fine showing. They defeated Millsaps 76-66 but were on the short end of a 63-58 score against Lambuth. However, Boals and Waller again re- ceived All-Tournament honors. This series was an indication of what the opposing coaches thought of these two boys. As for next year the picture is darkened by the graduation of three outstanding players. Boals, McMillion, and Waller will receive the sheepskin in June. However, returning to help brighten the picture are eight lettermen. This group consists of three-year lettermen Harris and Bertrand; two-year letter- men MacQueen, Fury, Curtis, and Hixon; with one-year letter- men Arman and Lipsett returning also. Southwestern had one of its best freshmen teams in years, which will help bolster the squad next year. Although a little short on height for the coming season, the Lynx will be ready. McMillion, G. MacQueen, C. Hartzog, C. Cornish, G. Minter, G. Nance, F. te. ae Bi EE a Most of the credit for this year’s performance can be attrib- uted to the outstanding job of coaching turned in by Coach Woody Johnson. In his two years at this school he has com- pletely changed the outlook on basketball at Southwestern. The students and faculty, and the people of Memphis realize that every time the Lynx take to the hardwood, they will give the opponents a good battle. Determination and hustle, the center of Coach Johnson's coaching philosophy, were the key words in this year’s success. As for outstanding individuals on the team, Waller and Boals were the sparkplugs all of the season. Both men were slowed down at times by illness or injuries, but still this did not keep them from having a banner year. Waller was the team’s lead- ing rebounder with Boals being the outstanding scorer. These two boys will be sorely missed next season. Waller, picture on page 174, is shown battling for a rebound against Howell of Mississippi State. Boals, pictured on page 175, is shown sink- ing another one of his patented jump shots. Our story would not be complete without the mention of the scoring record broken by Boals this season. With 14:44 to go in the second half against Delta State, Boals broke the all-time scoring record held previously by Bob Jackson. Jackson's record was 1265 points in his college playing career. Boals went on to score 1332 points to insure his record a long life. Also, Boals was selected by his teammates as Most Valuable Player and awarded the Lawson-Cavette Award. So alll, in alll, it was a fine season for both Boals and the Lynxcats. Womens Athletics The Women’s Physical Education Program at Southwestern is based on a theory — everyone can and should enjoy sports in some capacity. Of course, we hope that each student can find an activity which she can learn and like, not only while in college, but also for pleasure after graduation. As a result of this theory we stress in our program golf, tennis, badminton and exercise, but we also teach basketball, volleyball, field hockey, archery, fencing, softball and modern dance. Enlivening the teaching of these sports is the Intramural activities in which the five sororities and the Independent group compete. A tournament in each sport climaxes the season with a trophy awarded to the winner. A varsity team too is recognized with a gold medal award. Those girls who have shown themselves to be particularly outstanding in sports are awarded a college blazer and elected to membership in Pan-Olympics. The program is under the leadership of Madelyn Richardson, Director of the Physical Education Department. Modern Dance is also a very important part of the physical education pro- gram, and each student is required to take part. The group invites those especially interested in dance, performing each year for the college and Memphis organizations. Each year we feel the success of the department expands due to the enthu- siasm and interest of the participating women.
