This surprise factor grounded an effective passing attack and enabled a much weaker Choctaw team to float past by a margin of 19 to 7. The Centre Colonels tied the Lynx hands by capitalizing on our mistakes. This gave them possession of the ball during most of the game and led them to a hard fought, 21 to 13, victory. One Hundred Sixty-six ) The Hendrix Warriors, strengthened by transfers from the University of Arkansas, carried high hopes of victory on to Fargason Field. These hopes soon faded as each of their thrusts bounced off the impenetrable wall of Super Cats. The score was 27 to 6. A Kangaroo squad, which was ranked fifth in Texas among independent colleges, was presented with many homecoming surprises; original decorations, crowded stands, and a scrappy Lynx team which handed them a 32 to 7 defeat. A surprising and accurate barrage of passes was the weapon used to bombard the Millsap’s camp into sub- mission and provide a 29 to 6 triumph over the Majors. Reserve strength, sub-freezing weather, and a long way from home were the factors which favored this clan of Little Giants. This Indiana team played these factors to the tune of Wa- bash 39, Southwestern 21. After fighting a battle with the flu bug, the Lynx journeyed to Birmingham and suffered the worst upset : of the year at the hands of a spirited and healthy Howard | eleven, 17 to 0. | Sewanee came from atop the mountain in hopes of avenging a three year jinx. This they were able to do by the score of 34 to 12 and the Orgill trophy went up on the mountain for the first time. Making his debut as a Southwestern Coach, Johnson led his cagers to a successful first half season by winning 7 out of the first 11 games. This included two games with South- eastern Conference foes, Mississippi State and Vander- bilt. A fine scoring effort was displayed against Missis- sippi State’s phenomenal defense, which held many national ranking teams to lower scoring depths. The Vanderbilt game saw a spirited Southwestern team go down to defeat due to height disadvantages and illness, which hampered the play of many of the team’s starters. One of the highlights of the season was against Mississippi Southern, ranked twelfth in the nation ‘ among small colleges. Although definite underdogs, af the Lynx upset the Mississippi team by the slim margin of 72-69. The game displayed the fine team spirit and potential which had been rising to the occasion all year. The second half of the season was not as good as was anticipated due to the loss of Bill Young and in- opportune illness in certain games. However, Lynx junior Joe Boals outstandingly took up the scoring reins for the team and was aided greatly by the con- sistent rebounding of Mo Mo Waller. The steady floor play of ballhandling ace, Bill Harris, and Lynx stalwarts John Hixon and Jim Breazeale, aided by outstanding efforts by Fred Bertrand and Larry Fury rounded out the remainder of the season, which ended with the Lynx placing fourth in the Sewanee Invitational Tour- nament. On the statistical side, Boals had 360 points for the individual high. He was followed by Waller with 356 and Harris with 269. Waller led the team’s rebounding effort with 214. Bertrand had 187 to place second. However, Southwestern statistics were rewritten in the past four years by a 5 8” ‘giant’, Bill Young. Even though Young, considered by many as Southwestern’s greatest athlete, was able to complete only one full season out of the four he played, he had an all-time high of 1210 points, which is only 53 points away from the school’s all-time high. In his career Young also scored the most points in one season, 507’; holds the Mallory Gym record of the most points in a single game, 36; and, is tied with George Blakemore for the ‘most points scored in a single game, 40. From the ranks of this year’s team only three seniors, all lettermen, will be lost, Jim Breazeale, Bill Young, and Eddie Horton. Returning lettermen who will form the nucleus of the 58-59 squad will be guards Boals and Harris, forwards Waller, who was this year’s most valuable player, Hixon, and Fury, and centers Bertrand and Kinas. One Hundred Seventy-seven Womens Athletics The program of athletics and physical education for women offers a variety of activities for every taste. Under the direction of Madelyn Richardson and Joye Cobb, the program presents golf, tennis, badminton, archery, fencing, basketball, volleyball, softball, field hockey, and modern dance. During the year an intramural program with com- petition among the five sororities and the Independ- ent Women in volley ball, basketball, and softball is sponsored by the Women’s Athletic Association. In May a Field Day is held with competition in indi- vidual sports. Trophies are awarded for the sepa- rate sports and at the end of the year the group with the most points is awarded the Intramural Trophy by the Women’s Athletic Association. This year the All-Star volley team played MSCW and the basketball team played Ole Miss. South- western won both games, the latter by the narrow margin of one point. The more advanced dancers of the Modern Dance Group created and produced an original dance based on the story of Ruth and Naomi which they presented in chapel and for a program at Evergreen Presbyterian Church. The entire physical program for women at South- western is well-rounded and gives every girl an opportunity to learn a sport or activity that she will be able to enjoy many years after college. Again this year many people have contributed their time and talents in an effort to achieve this end. To the section editors, Lynn, Carol Ann, Wilson, Jerry, Larry, Diana, and Ann, goes my deepest appreciation for the magnificent job you did. Without your hard work this annual would still be in the planning stage. All of the original art work came from the pen of Beryl Friddle and the bulk of the photography was done by “Dunk.” I would also like to thank Dr. Wolf, Bill Howard, The Speers, and Bill and Joy Webb for their contributions of special pictures. Mr. Cole, Jay, and all of the other congenial people at Memphis Engraving made my job much easier with their efficient and sincere help. “Doc” Southerland of C. B. Johnston Co. proved to be a true craftsman and gave our book the very best appearance possible and for this we are grateful. On the financial side Mr. Springfield never hesitated to give us the help needed to make the best book possible, and thanks to Sandy the books were always balanced. Then on every annual staff there is the group of unheralded workers who do the laborious chores of typing, pasting, and make-up. To these people go my sincere gratitude for the important tasks they fulfilled. This is the way your yearbook was made and these are the people who have made it possible. We hope it has captured the memories you would like to retain from this 1957-58 school year. ie IERDEN One Hundred Ninety-four = aaaine SS oe SS ES == Cem OUNST@NE.
