Ten DEDICATION— It is fitting that the student annual be dedicated to Dr. Queener. Both in classroom and in personal contacts with students he has shown a true concern for the indi- vidual and his needs. ‘Touching many fields, his knowl- edge is willingly shared. He is never too busy for a student who comes to him for help or advice; no matter what the problem, he recognizes both large and small matters as being important to the individual. His efforts to aid the student in facing and meeting a situation are un- selfishly given. In deep appreciation, on behalf of the students of Southwestern, we dedicate the 1957 LYNX to Dr. E. The team won three games while losing five, including the last three games in a row, to provide the bad part of the story. But it was the way in which students, and fans in general, took the losses that helped ease some of the disappointment of not winning, if there is any real consolation for defeat. Followers of the Lynx gridders were howling mad when the team got beat, not mad at Mays or the players in particular— but unwilling to accept second best on the gridiron. And if you think that’s a strange thing to be pleased over, you haven't kept close tabs on the evolution of Southwestern football since the last World War. It has been some time, the late 1930's in fact, since students here, and the public, have said much about Southwestern losing football games. For during that period Lynx grid machines developed a woeful tend- ency to be on the bottom of things. In the fall of 1951 the sport was even discontinued for a year. During the 1952-53 seasons only one win was salvaged from a total of 15 contests. 1954 Rick Mays came back to his alma mater as head football coach, and things started happening. The Lynx won three times, and lost four in May’s first cam- paign, and then burst to a fine 6-2 record in 1955, play- ing some of the best small college football in the country. Then came the 3-5 mark this last fall when the fans were looking for another big year, and they didn't like it one bit. But take it from Mays, or Athletic Director Bill May- bry, or even me, a sometime student who's been around long enough to appreciate the difference in attitudes— it's much better to have only a fair season and have the public wanting and expecting more, than to come up with a spotty campaign and have people congratu- late you for winning at all. Football is getting better each season at Southwestern, and this was no exception. One Hundred Sixty-four have good, bad season The Lynx carried a win streak of five games over into the start of the 1956 season, and added a pair to that skein before things got bad. From the third game on, only one win was managed from the six played, and the losses came in about every fashion you can imagine. Co-Captained by quarterback Billy Young and cen- ter Jim Breazeale, the red and black squad traveled to Sewanee, Tenn., for their first 1956 outing, and handed the University of the South a third straight lacing, 27-7, in the series between the schools. Involved was posses- sion of the Orgill Trophy, which Southwestern has kept since its beginning in 1954. Young put his team into an early lead with a pair of quick touchdowns, and then halfback Alston Jones and reserve quarterback Don Griggs each added one more marker to wrap things up. Fullback John Martin booted two of the extra points, and Griggs got the third. Win number seven in a row, the longest Lynx grid streak in two decades, was added the following Satur- day afternoon on Fargason Field—this one at the ex- pense of Mississippi College, 21-13. Not since 1935 had Southwestern beaten the Choctaws on the gridiron, but this time there was no doubt. Young had a hand in all but one of the home points, it going to Martin on a PAT. Young passed twice to Jones for early scores, later hit end Bobby Rose in the end zone, and booted two points after. But this was the end of the winning weeks, for the breaks were about to turn. Missouri School of Mines was the villain on the next weekend in Rolla, Mo., sending ihe Lynx down to a 27-7 defeat. There was nothing half-hearted about the game, as the Miners took command from the start and didn't let up. Martin picked up the seven Southwestern points after the issue was out of doubt—it was simply a bad day against a better team, but nothing to hang one’s head about. B ack to Fargason Field against Centre College, who came in boasting a 13 game winning skein and an un- blemished record against the Lynx in ten meetings. And for 55 minutes of play it seemed that most of the Colonels’ glory was about to be ended, for the Ken- tuckians were on the short end of a 13-6 count, and were deep in their own territory. But then came the most unusual series of plays of this unusual season, putting Centre in the driver's seat to stay. First the Colonels used a 75 yard pass play to tie things up at 13-13, then they picked off one of Young's pitchouts for a score and a 20-13 margin, and finally intercepted a last-ditch pass for the crusher, making the final 27-13 score. You can watch the game movies with Mays and staff, and you still won't believe it. Homecoming 1956 was the highpoint of the season, from the point of record, and also alumnae enthusiasm. Washington and Lee was the opponent that faced the Lynx on their best day, and the Generals were simply hammered all over the field, losing 42-0. The Home- coming festivities honored the class and football team of 1926, the first after Southwestern moved to Memphis, and the grads couldn't have asked for a better game, from a partisan viewpoint. Again it was the versatile Young who supplied much of the offensive punch, passing for two scores—one to end Jettie Bowen and another to Rose. Bowen picked up another marker with the runback of a blocked punt, and halfbacks Charlie Ames and C. D. Kilpatrick tallied once apiece. Martin plunged for a single touchdown and kicked six straight extra points. It was a lot of football power, and at the perfect time. i t in 1956 foothall efforts For the next three Saturdays Southwestern didn't have much to shout about from the football point of view. Millsaps knocked off the Lynx, possibly a bit over- confident after the W L runaway, in a sluggish 12-0 game; Howard followed suit with a 20-14 upset, and Austin College poured it on 52-20 in the season finale. The Millsaps tilt was the most disappointing. Neither team showed much spirit during the game, and the home Majors rallied for two scores in the final seven minutes to pull the decision out of danger. A complete reversal from the performance of the previous weekend. Howard came to Fargason Field as decided under- dogs and left with a hard-earned 20-14 victory to their credit. The Lynx were game from the start, but couldn't get an offense going, and lost the services of stellar guard Robert Templeton early in the first quarter, when a broken leg ended the 175 pound defensive ace’s career. Martin got the first home touchdown in the first half, and Ames ran back a Bulldog punt 69 yards for the other marker. Martin and halfback Shep Crigler contributed the extra points. It's generally agreed that Southwestern played Austin College one year too soon. The Kangeroos were in the midst of a de-emphasis program, but hadn't carried it far enough for Lynx purposes. Young had the best night of his football career, completing 17 of 29 pass attempts for 204 total yards and two scores, and tallying a third time on his own. Bowen caught both the Young TD aerials, and Martin booted a pair of points. Play started with an explosion of offense. Austin scored the first three times it had possession of the ball, and the Lynx punched across in their first two attempts. But it wasn't enough to stem the tide, and Austin rolled on to their eventual lop-sided win. But it’s strange— some of the observers will claim that this game was the season's best for Southwestern from a team standpoint. The big effort was very much present that night—it deserved a better reward. One of the best parts I remember from the 1956 football season was the way in which the Lynx line held its own ground, and maybe a little more, against bigger and more-experienced forward walls. Breazeale, Templeton, Dick Brankstone, and John Kopsinis formed the best center and guard combinations this school has enjoyed in many years. John Oxley, Stonie Maxwell, Dave Simpson, and Tom Tapp had their good days in the tackle spots, and Rose and Bowen were very good as ends. Having all four home games televised over WMCT in Memphis as the regional NCAA Games of the Week helped acquaint mid-south fans with the Lynx personnel and brand of football. It's unusual, and nice, for an unsubsidized squad to be able to lay claim to the title of “most televised college team in the nation.” And one of the best parts of the whole year was hearing that Young made the Associated Press Little All-American squad for the second year in a row. It couldn't happen to a more-deserving player. Martin won the scoring title with 32 points—three touchdowns and 14 extra points. Young scored 20 points and passed for eight more markers. Of the personnel whom Mays counted on during the 1956 season, only Martin, Breazeale, Templeton, Brank- stone, Tapp, and fullback Duane Hoover will be absent in 1957. Good things in the football line are on their way from Southwestern. This year's squad was young and lacked experience which ac- counts for some of the heartbreaking losses which the team took. The only member of the team graduating will be captain Johnny Maxwell. There are prospects for a fine team next year. Bill Young and Morton Waller will build the nucleus with support coming from stellar sophomore Joe Boals and freshmen Bill Harris, Fred Bertrand, and John Hixon. The varsity squad was backed by the fine play of the Junior Varsity which was sent to the semi-finals of the ‘’B” division of the Mid-South Tourney. This team, led by captain Claude McMillion consisted of forwards John Hixon, Larry Fury, and Frank Splann and guards Claude McMillion, Jerry Peters, and Robert MacQueen. These boys should lend depth to next year’s varsity squad. One Hundred Sixty-eight During the season some of the highlights not only produced fine entertainment for the fans but also pro- duced a basket full of records. Guard Bill Young, only 5’8”, completely rewrote the record books this year. His 40 points scored against Birmingham Southern tied the record set for high score in a single game set by Barney Blakemore in 1940. Young also became the first Lynx player to tally more that 500 points in one season. Bill collected 504 points this year in 23 games. Although setting no records, Morton Waller aided the Lynx team with valuable rebounding and clutch scoring. Morton was a welcomed transfer from Vander- bilt. The Lynx captain John Maxwell led the Lynx in rebounds this year, setting a record of 22 rebounds in one game. Two freshmen who figured in the squad's success were Bill Harris, a fancy ball-handling guard from West Virginia and tall center Fred Bertrand from New Or- leans. Jettie Bowen and Jim Breazeale, two juniors, aided coach Frank Horton's young squad throughout the season. These boys will be called on next season to give that all important ingredient experience. This year field hockey was the newest addition to a busy program which included basketball, volleyball, softball, archery, golf, fencing, and modern dance. Under the guidance of the Women’s Athletic As- sociation, the intramural program sponsored tourna- ments in volleyball, basketball, softball, tennis, and badminton. The annual Field Day in May included events in archery, golf, and ping-pong, in which over 200 girls participated. The year began with volleyball, and the sororities as well as the Independent Women entered enthusiastic teams. After many hard fought games Delta Delta Delta emerged undefeated. Independents placed second with a four won, two lost record. From all of the players an All Star team was picked. Those chosen were Deano Thompson, Ann Underwood, Betty Russell, Sissy Ras- berry, Grace Morris, Jane Whittington, Ann Mack, Sue Robinson. After exams, all were eager for basketball to begin. Again the Tri-Delts took first place, but not without competition, for both the AOPi’s and the ZTA’s ex- hibited outstanding teams which placed second and third. The basketball All-Star team included Sue Robin- One Hundred Seventy-four son, Patsy Smith, Diana L’heureux, Jane Whittington, Marilyn Smith, Ann Myers. Beside intramurals the girls participated in a volley- ball tournament at Memphis State. Also Southwestern was host to Ole Miss. and M.S.C.W. in a basketball and volleyball Play Night which will become an annual event. Despite the fact that Southwestern offers no major in Physical Education the teams did very well. In the city and college badminton tourney Madelyn Richardson and Camille Deaderick came away with the ‘'silver!”’ The Modern Dance Group by no means sat by idly. Among their activities was a Chapel Program of Re- ligious Dance interpretations plus a spirited and color- ful performance of ‘‘Madeline” for the public. Under the direction of Mrs. Joye Cobb this group attended dance festivals at other colleges and at the Ballet Society.
